Dimitri Tiomkin was most responsible for the practice of using a title tune, most often sung over the opening credits, in the 1950s (usually by a famous recording artist of the time), especially in Western films. Tiomkin won 2 Academy Awards for the 1952 Western film, HIGH NOON, one for his underscore and another for the song, “Do Not Forsake Me”, which was sung in the film’s credit sequence by Tex Ritter and used throughout his score. Frankie Laine’s recording of the song was a worldwide hit. When asked by a reporter how it was possible for a Jewish immigrant from Russia to write film music so perfectly suited to the American West, Tiomkin replied, “A Steppe is a Steppe is a Steppe.” Two years later Tiomkin won another Academy Award for his score for the great granddaddy of all disaster flicks, THE HIGH AND THE MIGHTY. The theme from this film was such a great success with Les Baxter and other instrumental orchestras that Decca Records asked Tiomkin to make his own recording along with other themes by the composer. The resulting album was Coral Records CRL-57006, titled “Movie Themes from Hollywood”, which also featured rarely recorded themes from Tiomkin’s 1950s film scores, including STRANGE LADY IN TOWN, THE ADVENTURES OF HAJJI BABA, LAND OF THE PHAROAHS & two themes from Hitchcock films, I CONFESS and DIAL “M” FOR MURDER. Released legitimately only on American and Japanese vinyl, this album has been out of print since the 1980s. This new DSD remastering is from a mint Japanese MCA pressing and, to fill the program out to CD length, included is a new tape sourced DSD remastering of Tiomkin’s sound track underscore from the 1956 film classic FRIENDLY PERSUASION. I believe you will find the musical content of this download a most enjoyable listening experience.

I hope you don't mind me contacting you but it's in relation to the complete recording you put together a while back for 'South Pacific'. I've only just joined this forum and came across it, in the hope that I could download it - but it's now unfortunately been taken down. I was wondering whether there's any way you could send me a private link, or even the files in an email/WeTransfer, since I would love to hear your efforts. I absolutely adore this film score, and it would be a particularly wonderful gift for my dad - since he introduced it to me when I was growing up.

It would mean so much to be able to enjoy a complete version of this soundtrack - it's such a shame that there's never been an official release!

If there's anything you can do I'd be so grateful.

It would be purely for own own listening pleasure, and I would be very prepared to pay for your efforts.
