Mihalis Kakogiannis was one of two internationally prominent Greek film directors in the 1960s & 70s (the other was Costa-Garvas). THE DAY THE FISH CAME OUT, a rather weird cautionary science-fiction comedy released in 1967, was his first film following the enormous success of 1964’s ZORBA THE GREEK. Despite the film boasting an all star cast including Tom Courtney, Sam Wanamaker and a stunningly beautiful young Candice Bergen, THE DAY THE FISH CAME OUT was not successful financially but has developed a cult following in recent times. The appropriately futuristic music on the film’s soundtrack was provided by the composer of ZORBA THE GREEK, Mikis Theodorakis. This DSD remaster of THE DAY THE FISH CAME OUT is derived from a very clean tape copy of the soundtrack sessions and the end result can be heard on the download link below.

Also on the download is Theodorakis’ score from ZORBA THE GREEK, which I transferred from a tape source that appears to be a straight dub of the sound track album cues before any dialogue snippets or fake stereo processing was added. Although there was some overload distortion (probably from the original recording sessions) it sounded a lot brighter and more dynamic than any LP or CD version of this soundtrack I've ever heard, although the hiss level of this pre Dolby recording was high even for its time. I resisted the urge to remove too much hiss so as not to compromise the high end (I think excessive hiss removal is the reason most CD releases of Zorba sound so dull). I used the extraction process to allow the monaural recording to breathe nicely across two speakers or headphones I was hoping to find more music on the tape since Zorba was a very short soundtrack album but I don't remember the film having a lot more music in it anyway. I assembled the cues to play as a 25 minute suite (but tracked as on the soundtrack LP). Both soundtracks in this download are in the 16 bit WAVE format dithered directly from the DSD master file.

The contrast between the more traditional music in ZORBA THE GREEK and the far out score in THE DAY THE FISH CAME OUT is a hallmark of the brilliance and versatility of composer Mikis Theodorakis.

I actually first knew of Mikis Theodorakis through his 'Z' and 'Serpico' scores. A magnificent and very passionate composer.
Many thanks for the share.
