Composer: Claude Bolling
Year: 1980
Format: Apple Lossless

Excellent, little known horror score by Claude Bolling. With its eerie tone and French impressionist flourishes, it sounds very much like a Toru Takemitsu score, especially like his work on Empire of Passion or the more mystical sounding portions of Glowing Autumn. This is the complete score as included in the pricey import "Claude Bolling: American Movies" 2-cd set; I have encoded it with the beautiful original LP art, but if you wish to use the hideous "American Movies" box art, go right ahead. The sound is of course much better than those old LP rips that have been floating around.

Tracklisting:
1. Queen Kara (04:00)
2. Heroglyphics (02:57)

5. The eclipse (02:12)
6. She has a name (01:28)

8. The mirror (02:25)
9. The kiss (02:16)
10. Corbeck's garden (02:35)

16. Body snatching ceremony (02:13)
17. Psychiatrist's death (03:32)
18. The ceremony / Queen Kara (finale) (08:18)

Total runtime: 52:38 (13 more minutes than the LP release)

That's great! A prime example of a score so much better than the movie that it almost makes a totally crap film worth watching... But now I won't have to. Thanks!

The LP is a different (and superior) recording

Cvalda
06-14-2015, 01:40 PM
No it isn't; the only difference in recording is the Main Title cue, which is a shorter alternate take on the LP (and duplicated twice for some reason). The LP is just heavily edited and features a lot more reverb in its mix.

A wonderful score unfortunately not quite well-known !
Thank you very much for the sonics & length upgrades !

Listen to Corbeck's Garden (Party) LP version from the 1.00 minute mark, the instrumentation is different

Listen to that cue with headphones and you'll hear that the LP version just has a terribly edited 10 second overdub for some reason. Hardly a different recording.

If it's cheap where you are, then by all means buy it yourself :)

Ok we'll have to disagree here, let's just say I prefer the LP edit as a listening experience (esp. the Main Title arrangement)

It's true, the Lp sounds different - in some places better (or we just have become too used to it) - but is far from complete. So you have to combine both versions.

An LP-copy @320 would be nice to have... anyone?

I bought this three times... On record, as a warped cd on ebay - which oddly ran at the wrong speed! - and in the newly released 2cd set.

Thanks for such a great post. BTW, I noticed that the left and right channels are reversed on this new CD release of the score, compared to the LP.
