Although purportedly better known in Vivaldis output than the violin sonatas, these cello sonatas still sit entirely in the shadow of his concertos. In the more than fifty of those written for cello or bassoon as soloist, he had already proved an exceptional instinct for exploiting the melodic possibilities of the lower registers. These sonatas present a greater challenge again, by combining two cellos, bass and chamber organ (alternating with harpsichord) for a balance strongly skewed to the bottom octaves reminiscent, indeed, of viol music from the previous century. Their traditional four-movement sonata structure alternates slow and fast tempos, giving them a more leisurely demeanour than the concertos. Its a shame that Vivaldi chose to relegate the second cello to a continuo role as, on the rare occasions when the two instruments are allowed to entwine solo lines, the result is meltingly lovely.

The six sonatas (plus a fragment) recorded here represent two-thirds of Vivaldis extant output, and all are believed to have been produced at the height of his career in the mid-1720s. They certainly lack the florid showmanship of the concertos, but the sonata format was hugely popular throughout the Baroque and Vivaldi clearly took it very seriously. With an ensemble mainly comprising members of Gli Incogniti, the playing is beyond reproach, and Im sure that all Vivaldi enthusiasts will enjoy this unusual perspective on his work. The recording is top drawer, as I expect from ZZT especially rich texturally, though the preponderance of low frequencies means the soundstaging is inevitably a little diffuse. AF - Audiophilia -
