<a href="http://imgur.com/Ir1xcYC">

The late great Tony Thomas produced this LP in the Early 70's

This is the complete soundtrack dialogue included
but fear not the music is so up front in the mix and almost continuous melodious lushness.

Steiner was encouraged to fill this film with music,
quite a departure since music had dropped out of Hollywood
films as a backlash against the non stop singing and dancing
of the early sound Musicals.Steiner spent $20,000 to purchase
marimbas, ukeleles, steel guitars and vibraphones for his score

All praise to the original uploaders, here's the note by him that's contained within

"WARNER BROS.
FIFTY YEARS OF FILM MUSIC 1923-1973
Vinyl rip from three record box set released in 1973
Warner Bros. Records 3XX 2736 (monophonic)

This album was ripped from the original vinyl edition by a guy named Pete. That means I got away this time.
And that's a lucky thing, since my record player just won't work properly.
And Pete made a terrific job, that's for sure.
God bless you, Pete, wherever you are.

The booklet and covers are all scanned, stitched and edited by me.

Hope you will enjoy the experience of this nostalgia from the 70's.

Thanks so much for those Warner Bros collections which were among the first things I ever downloaded years ago. I even remember the name Matewan as the uploader. I lost them in a crash (didn't have an external hard drive in those days) and have been looking for them ever since. Glad to have them again. The booklets are gorgeous.

Hollywood Rhapsody

John Wilson conducts the
BBC Symphony Chorus
BBC Symphony Orchestra
Barbican Hall, London

Sunday, January 09, 2011

E. W. Korngold - Kings Row - Main Title
Franz Waxman - Prince Valiant - Suite
David Raksin - The Bad and the Beautiful - Theme
Bronislau Kaper - Mutiny on the Bounty - Overture
Miklos Rzsa - Madame Bovary - Waltz
Cole Porter arr. Conrad Salinger - Silk Stockings
Herbert Stothart/Harold Arlen - The Wizard of Oz - Suite
Alfred Newman - Airport - Main Title
Alfred Newman - The Song Of Bernadette - Suite
Bernard Herrmann - North by Northwest - Suite
Max Steiner - Gone with the Wind - Suite

There's no bigger a film music snob than myself when it comes to re recordings of early Hollywood film scores
but Wilson pretty much nails it here with style

How I missed this thread of yours, I'll never know. Perhaps I blinked.
Many thanks for the posts.
Spooky, but you mention the name 'Matewan' in post #4. I don't know the connection, but I will add (completely off track) that 'Matewan' is actually one of my favourite films (let alone Westerns) of all time (that along with 'Heaven's Gate').
'Saftness aside, again many thanks for this new (well to me anyway) thread, and the great posts.

here's the track list for first 3 Volumes of Original Soundtrack material

The Sound quality on some of this stuff is pretty poor but saying that some of it surprisingly good

The majority of these films just have the usual main and end titles you'd expect in the early 1930's
but there's some notable exceptions like Mr Robinson Crusoe, the Eddie Cantor Musicals and Al Jolson's Hallelujah I'm A Bum,
and Mary Pickford's last film Secrets

One Heavenly Night
Whoopee!
The Devil to Pay!

Alfred Newman Volume One

After arriving in Hollywood from Broadway at the Behest of Irving Berlin to work on Reaching for the Moon, he was immediately lent out to Sam Goldwyn when the Berlin pic was way behind schedule. His first conducting job for Goldwyn was on One Heavenly Night. Frank Tours was Musical Director. Goldwyn was impressed and gave Newman the job of Musical Director on Eddie Cantor's Whoopee. His years on Broadway during the 1920's showed him a seasoned professional before ever standing in front of a Silver Screen. His collaboration with Chaplin and Arthur Johnston on City lights must have been as compositionally informative an experience for him as for them and his friendship and work on Gershwin's stage scores became the language of the Big City film score.
