“The Deep” was Peter Benchley’s follow up book to “Jaws”, the film version of which was a box office blockbuster in 1975. Two years later, “The Deep” was made into a mediocre film that, although a financial success at the time of its release in 1977, is barely remembered today and mostly for a braless Jacqueline Bisset coming out of the ocean wearing only a clinging white wet T shirt. Also deserving of remembrance is the stunningly beautiful, atmospheric music score by John Barry, an almost 80 minute symphony of the sea which was reduced to about 20 minutes on one side of the Casablanca Records soundtrack LP. The other side of the LP featured 4 disco source cues, including no less than 3 versions of the song “Down, Deep Inside”, Barry’s main theme from the film with lyrics and vocals by Donna Summer along with a purely instrumental mix. The other song was called “Disco Calypso” written and sung by Alston "Beckett" Cyrus. The soundtrack LP from “The Deep” was out of print for over 30 years and finally got released on CD in 2010 as part of a limited edition 2 CD set which also included 57 minutes of Barry’s score in monaural, now also out of print. This new extended mix of Barry’s symphonic score runs 78 minutes, essentially the entire score including a few outtakes not used in the finished film. The inch tape used contained both stereo and monaural cues. The mono cues have been converted for listening on stereo systems using an extraction process that preserves the integrity and dynamics of the original signal but also provides directional highlighting that compliments and transitions better with the stereo cues. I believe you will find the overall sound of this mix better than the limited edition monaural CD of this score. Also included as Bonus Tracks are the 4 source disco dance pieces from the Casablanca soundtrack album ”The Deep” is one of John Barry’s finest scores and the Donna Summer vocals hopefully will bring back some fond memories of the Disco era of the 1970s.
