Well, NO movie will EVER live up to the hype that's generated by a film like this. Fans naturally expect so much, that even if it's spectacular, it will rarely live up to thepreconceived legend we've placed upon it. It took me a full 2 years to actually see how great TDK was, simply because I loved BB SO much, that I felt let down by the TDK initially... And for no other reason than my own standards put upon it, pre-release. If that makes sense.

I think there are only two movies I've ever seen that went above and beyond my expectations: The Winter Soldier and Interstellar.

I know what you mean. I have high hopes for Age of Ultron, for instance, but I really worry that I'll be let down when I see it. The first Avengers was a real disappointment to me for some reason.

At least I'm not the only one let down by the first one. It's very low on my list of Marvel Movies. I have a lot more hope for Age of Ultron just for that reason. Same with THOR. Hated the first and the second was way better.

I don't see what's so great about TWS.

Great directing. Great cinematography. Great music. Great writing. The Winter Soldier was extremely menacing, and the action was impeccable.

It also was more than just an action movie; it had elements of a political thriller. I love the idea that comic book movies can transcend simple action and adventure and be something more.

Thor 2 was stupid. The first one was all right, but I don't like Natalie Portman.

George Lucas.

Okay, so I know that just because George Lucas isn't having anything to do with this one it doesn't mean it's going to rock, but given that George had 100% creative control over the prequels and nowhere near that much over the original trilogy, that fact alone gives me some hope. Plus, Kasdan co-wrote both Episodes V and VI.

I doubt anyone involved in The Phantom Menace knew that it would be so reviled among Star Wars fans.

Harrison Ford came back for Indy 4 and people whined about it. He knew what the plot was and still did it anyway, even though aliens really aren't Indiana Jones-ish at all.

Exactly, as much of his career as he has spent trying to forget about Star Wars, his appearance in this episode smacks of trying to stay relevant, amongst other things.

Of course, I could be wrong... I haven't kept up with interviews and such on this. MAYBE, like many before him, he has finally accepted, embraced and found appreciation for the role that put him on the map, and gave him his illustrious career!

I think if you really want to blame somebody for this film (which to me still stands up better than the majority of the 'cursed' films in the series even if it does have its problems) you'd be wiser to blame the writers.

Killgrave
04-27-2015, 07:05 AM

Blaming the writers is like a carpenter blaming his tools. The director is the Captain Kirk of the cinematic enterprise and when you sit in the big chair you call the shots and you take the hits.

I would hardly refer to writers as tools (though some might in this case use that specific word). It's like not blaming an actor for the way they play their role.

Let me put it another way. Did you blame George Lucas for how the Prequels came out? Yes, I bet you did. Why was that? It certainly wasn't because of his directing (even if he isn't a brilliant director, remember he still wrote and directed the original film). When it comes to the prequels, many people are happy to blame the script. Why does that not apply here? Is it one rule for Lucas, another for everybody else?

Regardless, if you didn't like Into Darkness, that's fine and fair enough, but to say that it almost caused the franchise to die is a harsh overstatement, and I think just pinning it on the director is no good at all.

Of course I blame Lucas because he both wrote or co-wrote and directed the prequels. As director he decides who to cast in each role, he decides how the sets look, he decides how the actors interpret the script, that he wrote, and he decides if the shot will be a wide, medium or close up. That's what a director does, he decides and his decisions make or break a film. (I spent most of my adult life in radio and TV and have been on a few movie sets, so I have hands on experience.)

Abrams approved a script that his long time collaborators Orci and Kurtzman wrote. One that was filled with a bunch of WTF scenes that made no sense other than to look cool on screen. (Like submerging the Enterprise. That scene not only strained the laws of physics but story telling as well.)

And since the audience is the ultimately arbiter of such matters, the Star Trek reboot made $257,730,019 at the box office while Into Darkness made $228,778,661.

The audience voted with their wallets and sequel made less than the reboot.

ggctuk2005
04-27-2015, 09:22 PM
Adjusted for inflation, it did better at the box office than Wrath of Khan did ($79,912,963.00 at the time of 1982, so adjust it for inflation and that would be the equivalent of $192,914,861.36). Even if it did not fare as well as the 2009 reboot, as far as box office revenue goes, it is outstripped in the film series only by Star Trek IV ($233,197,464.34 after inflation adjustment). It was 10 on the list of highest-grossing films of 2013. Star Trek was #7 on 2009's list, so both films have a top 10 highest gross spot in the US.

If people were truly 'voting with their wallets' then a film such as The Hobbit 2 (#13, if you're wondering) should have easily knocked STID off that slot (to me, The Hobbit is the superior movie, though).

Okay, okay, that's enough derailing the thread anyway. Let's just agree to disagree and leave it at that.

I hope you're just being silly.

Of course, just mess'n around. I do think I'm more excited about the score then the actual film though.

I doubt even Scoreman or Scorepranos have it. Hell, Williams himself doesn't even have it lol

Rumor is that the legal Siths at Disney had taken John Williams to Anchorhead and had his memory erased until Friday. After midnight he can download his mind from iTunes again and remember what it was he scored.

Aw man, there's no way to download the full video from what I can tell.

The same video has a bombastic Leia's theme that was replaced by the piano plinking from the Football Trailer.

I know right! I miss the good ole days when soundtracks leaked weeks, sometimes a month early. I guess everyone is scared of the wrath of Mickey Mouse.

yea disney went crazy over someone posting a picture of a legally purchased action figure just imagine how they will be with the soundtrack lol

Yeah, I think it was either music for Kylo Ren on the Destroyer doing his Dialogue, or it was just an intro that was never meant to be used.

The whole premiere video is now on the official Star Wars YouTube channel! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0OIPggil7k) (Hopefully meaning the audio will be better quality)

How do you know this? I am assuming either this leaked in the private Trailer music circles, or Ursine themeselves confirmed the title.
