I have wanted for a long time to assemble an underscore suite from the 1956 film version of my favourite Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, “Carousel” but time has not been kind to the magnetic multi track music only master for this film, which suffers from “mag-wow” deterioration which can be clearly heard as pitch fluctuations in the music. In 2008 I was able to assemble a complete soundtrack album of the song score and ballet music completely free of any foley intrusions but the excellent tape source at my disposal did not include the underscore. Another liability is the fact that “Carousel” contained less than 30 minutes of underscore. Thanks to some updated computer programs I have been able to clean up a good portion of the damaged elements to a more acceptable level for listening, although it is still far from perfect and I have supplemented the short underscore with the waltz and dance music from the song score for a total of 45 minutes, all completely free of any foley & dialogue intrusions. The suite is assembled for a satisfying musical presentation, so the music is not exactly in the order it appeared in the film and more closely follows the stage version since the one aspect of the film I never liked was an already dead Billy telling the story in flashback. I include the magnificent version of the complete waltz recorded specifically for the soundtrack album as a bonus track after the suite. The suite is in 7 movements including the opening heavenly music and complete pantomime-waltz as heard in the film. The genius of composer-conductor Alfred Newman shines throughout these arrangements which are performed by the incomparable Fox Studio Orchestra. Since this album has never existed in reality, there is no cover art but included is a jpeg of the original Capitol stereo soundtrack cover art and a colour photograph taken at Boothbay Harbour, Maine, where the film's location sequences were filmed.
