NOTES

"State of Grace" is a 1990 neo-noir crime film starring Sean Penn,
Ed Harris and Gary Oldman, also featuring Robin Wright, John Turturro
and John C. Reilly. Written by Dennis McIntyre and directed by Phil
Joanou, the film has a musical score by Ennio Morricone. Although not
a box office success, the film was generally well received by critics.
Shot on location in New York City, it was inspired by the real-life
Hell's Kitchen gang The Westies.
Ennio Morricone delivers a characteristically opulent score, with lush
orchestrations lending emotional weight to Joanou's careening cranes
and sweeping tracks - In much the same way as in "Once Upon A Time In
America". His achingly beautiful score raises the bar considerably and
infuses the movie�s themes of regret and lost youth with a poignancy
that they might not otherwise have achieved.
Morricone seems destined to be remembered as a composer of film music.
Maybe the secret of his successful career in the movies lies in his
ability to respond emotionally and his talent to write music with which
the audience identifies.
I remember Morricone's words in an interview: �And what is talent?
I don�t know. But I do know that to become a musician you need infinite
study, sacrifice and discipline. Perhaps it isn�t talent, but passion
that is essential to become a good musician. So work and passion without
limits, and a bit of luck.�
"State of Grace" is under-appreciated: it is one of the most beautiful,
haunting scores.

If you consider watching the film, do it for Gary Oldman. What a talent!
He is the real star and steals the film.

For those who have watched it, I have ripped and included in a separate
file 9 songs playing in the background. Sinead O'Connor's "Drink Before
The War" is exceptional.
