A lovely selection from her first recording in 1928 up to the title song from the film Sing As We Go.
Gracie had the likes of Carroll Gibbons, Ray Noble and Ernest Irving as back up.

Despite the impression given by her numerous Comedic numbers she had a touching sweet voice which leaves me all sentimental,
not to mention those glorious Lancashire vowels we share.

A bonus feature of many photos from Childhood up to 1934 is included as well as a info page with links.

until he left to become musical director for dance and theatre music recordings at
Columbia Records in London. In this position he could call on the best players and

This is a fascinating glimpse of the Mantovani sound in embryo
and a unique record of a group that is more chamber music than orchestral,
more latin tinged than jazz but still retaining the sweet crooning vocals you'd expect from
the London Bands of the 1930's. Mantovani plays violin of course but what helps create
the special atmosphere is the use of accordian and clarinet oozing a cafe vibe.
The accordianist and arranger is Ronald Binge who remained with Mantovani into the 50's
to create the later famous string sound of the group.

mmm... well, let's try not be snobbish anonymous..
even though it's much too late in the day for this err Dance Band Autist/ fundamentalist of course
this Jazz 'Novelty' outfit was very popular both sides of the Atlantic during the late 30's.
The group create a pleasant trad/swing and latin influenced easy going vibe and the arrangements are spacious and uncluttered.
And though I cannot take to percussion lead anything in jazz, grinding my teeth through most drum solos waiting
for the music to start again! (ah ahh the ingratitude, I'm really not selling this am I..) it is never less than enjoyable..

As for 'Best of the British Dance Bands'. If I remember rightly wasn't Billy Cotton still on TV with his own show well into the early sixties, with his catchphrase of 'Whakey, Whakey'. I may be wrong about that, but I have distant memory flashes of that phrase.

What am I playing at!!
another in my 'Not really my cup of tea' series.
Now I've been a fiend for Sidney Bechet since a lad
never got the trad. Jazz thing, bit corny
buuuuhtt now appreciate the obsessive search for authenticity that drove Colyer and his comrades
digging ever deeper to find the source.... of course!!
ermm still of historical interest only for me i'm afraid as far as these recordings go.... ooops
Transferring Bert Firman's hot Jazz sides of the late 20's from LP at the same time doesn't help these guys any either (ouch).

TED HEATH & HIS MUSIC - Euphoria! (recordings from 1944 - 48)

Solid punchy swing from Ted Heath's band in gritty (in a good way) recordings,
Ted had worked in Jack Hylton's band in the late 20's then spent 8 years
with Ambrose from 1928 then Maurice Winnick, then Geraldo before setting off on his own in 1945.
A fairly decent pedigree eh What.
His big influence was Glen Miller who he got chance to meet on when Miller was on a British Tour in 1944.

Memoirs of Willie "The Lion" Smith (recorded in 1968)

This 2 CD set is a document of the evolution of early Jazz and Stride Piano.
Willie looks back and plays an array of selections from the early 20's showng Stride's
evolution from classic ragtime.... essential stuff.

And of course, it's a left eyebrow raised for the other guy (Ted Heath).

And thank you for 'Memoirs of Willie "The Lion" Smith'. (Although far removed from British Dance Bands - I've always liked Jazz background stuff, like Ragtime, old stride and boogie - appreciated).

Yes it seems I can't help broadening things out a bit but the other stuff will be mainly early Jazz that has some influence on the British Dance Band's roots or later stuff that the Dance Bands evolved/generated into or Early Recordings of other popular artistes or oh dammit anything really

It was actually a really good day. It didn't rain, and any day I see the BBMF's Dakota is a good one.

Next week, Bury's 40's weekend. Re-enactors, steam trains, and several good real ale pubs. What's not to love?

A great little gem.

Great. Just found this thread. I'm a big fan of the British Dance Bands.

The 'Pennies From Heaven' original 3 disc TV soundtrack is worth getting.

Oddly, I found one of the best hauls of 20-30s British stuff in Moscow. Loads of Ambrose, Hall, Noble/Bowlly, Gibbons, Hylton, Stone et al

That sounds v. exciting DavidRaphael you're more than welcome to post stuff here if you have the means.
