The CinemaScope process gets a rugged workout in Henry Hathaway's The Racers.
Kirk Douglas stars as an Italian bus driver who dreams of entering the Grand Prix as a world-
famous race car driver. Being Kirk Douglas, he achieves his goal, racing in all the major events
around the globe. Dedicated to the philosophy of "winning is the only thing", Douglas alienates
his fellow racers and everyone else with whom he comes in contact. Only when he is on the
verge of losing his sweetheart Bella Darvi does our hero put his priorities in order. Adapted
from a novel by Hans Ruesch, The Racers was remade in a 60-minute version as Men
Against Speed, an entry in the weekly TV anthology The 20th Century-Fox Hour.
The last remake (thus far) of the Jean Webster novel Daddy Long Legs was extensively
revised to accommodate the talents of Fred Astaire and Leslie Caron. Fragments of the basic
plot remain: American millionaire Astaire is the unknown benefactor of French orphan girl Caron,
financing the girl's education on the proviso that his identity never be revealed to her. Moved
by Caron's letters of thanks, Astaire's secretary Thelma Ritter advises Astaire to go to France
to visit the "child". When he arrives, he finds that his ward has grown up rather nicely, and
the two fall in love--though Caron never knows until the very end who Astaire really is.
The old story has been updated to allow for an elaborate "cowboy" number and a couple
of Eisenhower jokes.
A remake of the French Le Corbeau ("The Raven"), The Thirteenth Letter is a film
noir in a curious setting -- a rural village deep in Quebec, seemingly sleepy and typical.
Dr. Laurent (Charles Boyer) returns from a medical convention in Montreal, anxious to see
his much younger wife, Cora (Constance Smith). Cora is attracted to Dr. Pearson (Michael
Rennie), a young doctor who moved into the town soon after his unfaithful wife killed herself.
Soon Pearson, Laurent and Cora all receive letters -- signed "the Raven" -- hinting at an
affair between Pearson and Cora. Soon more poison pen letters are showing up around
town, including one which insinuates that Pearson has not been telling the truth about
the medical condition of a wounded war hero. Distraught, the veteran takes his life,
unaware that the information in the letter was a lie. Meanwhile, Pearson has become
attracted to Denise, (Linda Darnell), a romance-starved young woman born with a
clubfoot. As suspicion builds about who is sending the letters -- and about whether
Pearson should be trusted -- the Mayor takes charge of the investigation, and Pearson
doubles his efforts to prove his innocence.
Produced by Darryl F. Zanuck and directed by Elia Kazan, Viva Zapata! follows the
life of Mexican revolutionary leader Emiliano Zapata (Marlon Brando) from his peasant
upbringing, through his rise to power in the early 1900s, to his death. The film presents
an interesting but fictionalized picture of Zapata. Zapata, the child of tenant-farmers,
was joined by Pancho Villa in his rebellion against tyrannical President Porfirio Diaz.
The film romanticizes Zapata and in doing so unfortunately distorts the true nature
of the wars he waged. Zapata fought, not to conquer Mexico but to free the land for
the peasants of Morelos and other southern provinces. The Oscar-nominated
screenplay by John Steinbeck ignores some historical details in order to focus on
the corruptive influence of power.
