Rocky Balboa never got an official soundtrack album. A compilation of songs and cues from the franchise was released to coincide with the film, but the score for this particular film has never seen the light of day. Ive ripped nearly all the music used in the film from the Blu-ray and I am very pleased with the results.
Youll hear no dialogue here. Tracks 1, 21, and 22 do contain some cheering, catcalling, and general audience hubbub, and most of the tracks do contain some light sound effects, but theyre barely distracting and if anything add a little atmosphere to the tracks. I couldnt rip all the music, but according to Wikipedia about 40 minutes of music were recorded for the film; this is around 35 minutes long. So if that information is correct, then this is nearly complete.
This film has one of the most interesting sound mixes Ive ever encountered. 95% of the dialogue was intelligently isolated in the center channels, deviating from this formula only when the scene required a bit of extra oomph in the surround channels. In cues where orchestra and piano intertwine, the piano was kept only in the front channels while the orchestra weaved through the front and rear channels. Sound effects were smartly distributed between the left and right channels. As opposed to many professional sound mixes where voices, sound effects, and music are scattered willy-nilly across all six channels for no reason at all, adding no extra immersion whatsoever, this films mix was cleverly put together. In my opinion, at least.
Tracklist
Are you wondering just how much SFX are in this? On a scale of 1 3, with 1 having little to no SFX and 3 having a lot, Ive assigned each track a number.
1) Rocky Balboa (3)
2) Philadelphia Morning/Visiting Adrian (2)
3) Mason Dixon* (1)
4) Change the Channel from Yesterday! (2)
5) Its Not All Right (2)
6) Little Marie (2)
7) A Job for Steps/Self-Respect (2)
8) Computer Fight (1)
9) Rocky and Robert (1)
10) Some Stuff in the Basement (1)
11) The Older I Get (2)
12) Better Than the Average Bear (2)
13) Why Didnt I Die Instead of My Sister? ** (2)
14) Punchers Chance (1)
15) Nothing Hits Harder Than Life (1)
16) A Father and His Son (2)
17) Training Begins (1)
18) Gonna Fly Now (1) ***
19) Scared (2)
20) The Night Before (1)
21) The Italian Stallion Returns (3)
22) The Final Bell (3)
23) Yo Adrian, We Did It. (2)
24) Rockys Reward (1)
* I think this is just an instrumental portion of Its a Fight.
** Paulie didnt say this in the final film, but after storming out of the restaurant, in a deleted scene he has a complete breakdown and says this in a moment of total despair as opposed to being inexplicably bouncy and happy in the final cut. If you havent seen this scene yet, check it out on YouTube or the special features on your disc. Its easily one of the most powerful moments of the film and they cut it for some reason.
*** This is not the version used in the film, unfortunately; its the version used in the end credits. They sound about the same, but the film version has a little more percussion. I didnt want to use the film version since it had a lot of distracting sound effects.
