Eis Am Stiel "Lemon Popsicle" (Eskimo Limon) is a series of 8 Israeli teen themed coming of age movies by director Boz Davidson released between 1978 and 1988, all taking place in 1950s & 1960s Israel and featuring 45 hit singles of the 1950s & 60s as background scoring. These films were an enormous hit not only in Israel, but also in Germany and many other European countries. In fact, the director did an inferior updated English language remake of the first film for MGM in 1982 called "The Last American Virgin". Ariola Records in Germany released soundtrack albums of all the films which only included about 12 to 16 songs per album, but over 250 1950s/60s Pop and Rock singles were used in the films. Curiously some of the songs are hits by different artists than the familiar American versions but all are the AM radio 45 singles versions of these songs. I was not aware that 45 singles were mixed differently than the LP versions as early as the mid 1950s onward and some of the songs were recorded very badly with obvious overload distortion being the main culprit. This is one of the most massive but equally rewarding restoration projects I have ever tackled but so far the initial results have been miraculous, particularly on the 1950s songs. I am probably working from 1970s magnetic tape reproductions of the original masters of many of these songs which went missing or had deteriorated by the time CDs came along, which means that the record labels possibly had to work from sources inferior to these soundtracks. I made up a expanded 9 CD set of all the remastered songs and include mp3 files of all 9 volumes. The 9th volume features songs that were licensed but not used in the final versions of the 8 films. If you know these films or would just like to hear the end results please give the files a listen. At the very least these film soundtracks offer one of the largest compilations of 1950s/60s hit singles ever. If your memories of these songs goes back to the sound of an old phonograph, you are in for a pleasant shock at the sound quality engineers were able to get on the master recordings only to have the record labels ruin their fine work in the 45 mastering process. I dare say that you may be hearing this music for the first time the way the original artists and producers intended. One caveat though: a great portion of this music is so innocently infectious and melodic that it will stay in your head for days after hearing it. But what's wrong with that? Enjoy.
