It doesn't get any better than this. This is the best out there. I used a newly acquired demo tape which surprisingly was mostly alternates compared to the released soundtrack which did contain some album version. I tried as much as possible not to use the dvd but when I did use it I tried my best to elminate sfx. This will probably be the last time I work on this score until some official release version comes out but until then your not going to find anything better out there.

UPDATE: The Film Version has been redone using the new expanded soundtrack along with the blu ray audio and M&E track.Making this complete and the last time I work on this score. The Film Version of The Storm cue requires all three versions on the expanded soundtrack. The first 1:05 is from the album version on disc 3 which then ends with the fade out from Lucy's Party (original version) on disc 1 and continues to 1:28 with the no choir version on disc 2 and into the original version on disc 1 to 2:15 then back to the album version on disc 3 to 4:39 with the ending of Lucy's Party (Original Version) on disc 1 overlayed onto the album version and back to the no choir version on disc 2 to 4:44 and then the album version to end the track from disc 3.

1. Dracula The Beginning (OST) Disc 3 & Disc 2
2. The Journey (OST) Disc 1 & 2
3. The Castle (OST) Disc 1 & 2
4. Come In (OST) Disc 1

Though, to be honest, I don't personally think duplicating original mangled film edits does Kilar's work any favours in the end.

A valiant effort all the same.

Thank you for this great effort? How do the music cues from the deleted scenes you posted factor into this edit?

The Prologue Extended would cover the second half of The begining and would cover tracks two and three. Then Gypsies in the coach would come before Borgo Pass after would come Harker Meets Dracula which replaces tracks five and six.Lucy's Party would be in the same spot.Harker Explores Castle is an extended version of track twelve. Harker's Escape Attempt would come after The Brides and replace track fourteen. The demeter lands is mixed in with The Storm. I'm not sure where Dracula On The Demeter goes. Rules Cafe/Convent would be the second part of the Mina/Dracula cue that plays in the film which is what replaced the music during the waltz.

Just curious - did you completely omit new cues like "The Reunion" and "Lucy's Screech" from the Film Version you put together or did you happen to splice them in with other cues? Is there any way you could specify which tracks, if any, didn't carry over from the demo tape/shooting script version to the Film Version you constructed? Thanks again! You really did an amazing job. :)

The reunion is actually a scene that was suppose to be Mina reuniting with Jonathan in Romania it was never used in the film. Lucy's Screech would of played during the staking of her which the recycled ring of fire was use instead. 95% of the shooting script version is not in the film version. When they started editing the final cut of the film they recycled alot of the same music like Vampire hunters was slowed down for Harker's Train Ride and then a straight violin version was used for Vampires Do Exist and used also with a heavier oboe sound in the Train. The Hunters Prelude was played slower over violin and timpani drum.Love Remembered,Love Eternal and Mina/Dracula were recycled in quite a few places. The Begining was used in The Blood Is The Life,Oceans Of Love,The Brides and Varna. Transfusion is the first part of The Hunt Builds. Their are only three cues from the demo tape Race Against The Sunset,Lucy's Screech and The Reunion. I did edit the deleted scenes into the score version in the proper place they would have fallen before they were cut out. It's too bad I don't have a VCR anymore because I have the full workprint version before the final cut.

Thank you for the clarification. I have just a few more brief questions. First, is there anything else from the demo tape that differs from the music you've posted so far or is it simply the same music under different names (e.g. Rules Cafe Waltz). Also, I can only assume you got the "Reunion" cue from the work print version of the film. If so, how does that version differ from the deleted scenes on the SE release of Bram Stoker's Dracula? If not - where did you find it?! Thanks!

The reunion is not in the deleted scenes it comes from the demo tape. Most of the tracks of the demo tape are alternates of what was release on the original soundtrack. The reunion scene would play right after Dracula reads the letter from Mina that sees rejoining her fiance.

As awesome as the cue "Race Against the Sunlight" is, I can understand why it was cut from album. The first 2 minutes are about as minimalistic and repetitive as it gets. It has a nice driving rhythm but just stands out as inferior to the remainder of the other excellent cues which have some interesting and engaging variations in their minimal repetitiveness. Super to finally have the cue though.

I love Kilar's music more than Philip Glass but their minimalistic approaches to music are about as irritating to me as Hans Zimmer doing the same score across many unrelated movies. There's such potential for growth but when a cue really starts getting excellent, it ends. All I have left over are repeating notes in my head building to a crescendo.

jacksparrow900
03-15-2015, 08:13 PM
It wasn't the only thing cut, the only cues that stayed the same on the album from the demo were The Brides,Love Remembered,Vampire Hunters,Lucy's Party,The Hunters Prelude, and The Green Mist everything else on the official album was an alternate.Ring Of Fire was shorter but it had no sfx. They proabaly figured that some of the music was for a cut of the film before 30 minutes of scenes were cut out. They wanted to stick to music heard in the film.

Agreed 100%. I've wanted that cue since 1992... Now after all these years, hearing it is understanding why it was omitted. Regardless, I'm glad to finally have it, along with some of the others. Thanks again man! I've been loving revisiting this score the last few nights!

I agree that the tagging is an issue but it is not the issue, which is having a complete, coherent accounting of all available music from the film. Lighten up on the guy - it's clear he busted his butt on this project. Let's see what he comes up with and we'll go from there.

Up until now I thought this was the best it was going to get but it just got better. I was able to get a copy of the isolated music and effects track and was able to get some cleaner tracks that had voice echoes that couldn't be eliminated before. Also a track that I thought I would never be able to rip properly because on every dvd and blu ray had the audio in the center channel and because using this new source it's completely free of dialogue that would of been impossible to erase before. I'll add the link to the first post.

It's already out now if you know where to look.
The picture quality already looks far improved.

The Dolby Atmos audio will be removed if trying to convert to WAV for editing.
Atmos is only for Atmos receivers.
A natural 7.1 TrueHD stream is what will be used for decoding/transcoding.

I haven't listened to it, but just saw screenshots of the picture upgrade.

It doesn't get any better than this. This is the best out there. I used a newly acquired demo tape which surprisingly was mostly alternates compared to the released soundtrack which did contain some album version. I tried as much as possible not to use the dvd but when I did use it I tried my best to elminate sfx. This will proabaly be the last time I work on this score until some official release version comes out but until then your not going to find anything better out there.

.

If you have all of those versions of the movie, which seems to include the uber rare Criterion laserdisc, good on you, can you tell me if any of those have the original theatrical subtitles for the none English scenes? I have the collector's edition which was a recent release (the two with the black covers there) and it has standard crap DVD subs for the Romanian dialogue, as you probably know, which isn't very good, and you probably know the original film had a specific font in the theatrical version for those scenes. I'm very particular about movies I like and garbage subs just won't do. Any recomendations on which version of the DVD is the best to own?

Jacksparrow, first of all thank you so much for all your efforts.
There are some great themes in there I hadn't heard.

Secondly, is there any chance to get the complete untouched demo tape without editing it?
I would love for example to hear the complete waltz theme from track 2 of score version based on shooting script that you crossfade with the train ride music.

Not sure if anyone following this thread knew, but Francis Ford Coppola said in his commentary for this film that Kilar didn't record a conventional score for this film, but rather, a series of cues that he handed over to the director and crew. Then, using different parts of the tracks, or muting certain instruments from the cues, edited them throughout the film. That's why there is so much redundancy in the score.

So, if you don't mind, could you briefly explain the different between the "Film Version" and the "Shooting Script" release? Is the shooting script the original cues by the composer, and the film version micro-edits to actually match how it was spotted into the movie? I certainly would love to hear everything Kilar composed in its best presentation, though for my money, don't need it to match the film exactly (especially if it was heavily edited in context). And where might those Deleted Scene cues fit in? Either way, thanks very much, excited to revisit this score!

The deleted scenes are included in the shooting script score where they would have been before they were deleted replacing some of the music that was heard in the final film. The shooting script has alot of music that didn't end up being used in the final film even music for scenes that were never filmed but where in the script and storyboards.

Ok, thanks for explaining. I guess then I'd really need to keep both Script and Film versions to get the fullest array of music available then, although I'd guess there's a fair amount of overlap still. But if there's lots of music that wasn't on the original score album, then I'll be curious and very happy, love this score!

Why is there 2 tracks for 1-9 and how do you get 45 tracks? I got all of the folders but don't know how to assembly ? If somebody could explain I would be very grateful thanks again for all your efforts.
