Not sure if I'll see this in theaters or not, so I'm not sure when I'll be able to listen to this. District 9 really blew me away and was a breath of fresh air for the sci-fi genre, but Blomkamp's Elysium was typical Hollywood garbage, unfortunately. With that film, he managed to destroy all of the goodwill his debut film earned him. The trailer for Chappie reminds me a lot of Elysium, so like I said, I don't know if I wan't to pay $10+ for a ticket to a movie I'll end up disliking. I guess I'll wait and see what the critics say, if it's worth my time or not.

I saw that and was unexpected and refreshing to see a filmmaker not toe the party line and just spout pandering bullshit. However, the while the initial teaser intrigued me, the later trailers that expanded on the plot and characters just felt so much like all of the problems of Elysium rehashed. It's an interesting concept for sure, but he doesn't seem to be able to do decent character work anymore. Hugh Jackman & Sigourney Weaver's characters are the ones that I have problems with. There doesn't seem to be any actual logic as to why they hate AI (or SI, which is the proper name), and it just seems like a hackneyed way to drum up an antagonist. The approach has already been done to death.

Hugh Jackman & Sigourney Weaver's characters are the ones that I have problems with.

A cliche pair of villains. Exactly the same as Jodie Foster and Sharlto Copley of Elysium.
Half the story looks good while the rest looks like a hollywood rehash from previous films all thrown into a blender.
It's exactly as you put it.
I got no real indication of their motives.
Elysium you can chalk it up to "drunk on power". A cliche but still pushes the story forward with regards to having a villain.

I won't be seeing this one in theaters.

Yeah, it was but as Dak wrote, and I read that interview as well, Blomkamp knows he screwed the pooch. He wrote Chappie with his District 9 screenwriter so that's a positive sign. I'm catching an advance screening Wednesday evening so I'll post my opinion, spoiler free of course, and let you know if Blomkamp learned his lesson.

What an odd score.

I like the sweet, emotional cues.
But the action cues are just... needs work. The constant stingers in the action cues feel so out of places, as a musical presentation.
I'm sure in the actual film, it goes better with sfx, dialogue and the visual film.

I'm not normally one for the soft-heart, touchy-feely music, but feels like this could have focused more on those parts than the video game action cues.

I think it has a lot of merit behind it, musically and technologically.

The mixing and sound engineering is some of their best work to date. The electronic soundscape and production is fucking top of the line, and appears like it may have taken a very long time to get right. Aside from that, when you get down to business, the music sounds really good. It has a Tron: Legacy-ish/Inception/Mombasa feel at times, perfect to listen to during gaming sessions and in the car, because a lot of it is fast. It also has moments that should give anyone chills, especially those who were fans of Interstellar (Ending of Murph Suite type climaxes etc).

Firstly, I would kindly like to thank the person who gave me the link for this score. :)

I still have yet to see the movie, so my opinion may or not change in the veredict of this OST.

I see that Hans, has been doing alot of electronic works lately, that's quite good since he initially started with synths on his first ones. There's very little, if not, non existent orchestra in here, which I think it's fine as it seems to fit into the context of this movies world. I shall only mention some tracks that caught my attention:

2. The Only Way Out Of This - I like the beats and sequencers used here, shame that the track goes nowhere until later, and even then it feels sort of repetitive after a while.

3. A Machine That Think And Feels - Modified synthetic celesta/music box are my WEAKNESS! GAHH! at least for this first minute of this track, the rest is pretty meh.

4. Firmware Update - My interest in this track start right at 0:50 with the calm eerie soundscape section, the chord progression followed with another celesta gives this one a nice touch.

14. Never Break A Promise - The closest track to Interstellar's score, from the chords to the repeating build up sequence of 3:40.

All in all, I think the best way for me to describe this score is that it's functional. It seems to work alot with the 8-bit music and there's some pretty nice emotional cues here and there. It'll probablly amplify my viewing and hearing experience when I get to see the movie, but as far as a standalone one, it's a bit above average and certianly not one of Zimmer's best of this year for me.

We surely wouldn't know too much of its existence.

The thing is though, there is just an extra higher brand of quality with this score because of the post production involved. You can hear it.

The mixing and mastering sounds much more high budget and precise compared to many other electronic tracks and/or scores. There are a lot of elements that put this above the competition, especially ambient sounds that Hans Zimmer samples and cleverly adds to the background of his music that nobody really does nearly as well as him. But really if Alan Myerson wasn't the scoring mixer, the music alone wouldn't be enough to get attention.

But hey, we won't know for sure about the full scope of this score until we watch the movie and find out what the scumbag label left out of the soundtrack. Only after hearing the complete score will I make my decision about how I feel about the music and how it as a whole stands up against Interstellar, Angels & Demons and some of Hans' best work.

Yes, I would want the score either way, I'm a fan of Neill, and when I heard of Ryan Amon in Elysium, I was very much curious, althought a bit disappointed that Clinton Shorter was not scoring. After hearing Zimmer was involved, I was excited to hear, and a bit disappointed that Ryan was not scoring.
I'm interested in any new composer in any film I am interested in, like Steve Jablonsky back in '07, had no idea who he was and loved his work ever since.

As for this score, it's mad and I found to be quite effective in exercise routines. I'm more interested in the work of Mazzaro and Andrew now, looking forward for their next work.
Can't wait for the Chappie either, next week it gets here, which is a relief because District 9 and Elysium had a two month dealy to get here.

Well it does have alot of Hans Zimmer in it, but there's so many composers nowdays doing this what he does that's hard to tell. As for what if the composer wasn't Hans Zimmer? I really wouldn't care if it's a big name as long the score does it's job to caught my attention. Like last years score "The Theory Of Everything" which I adore as my personal favourite of 2014, and I had no idea of this Jhann Jhannsson, until now.

Yeah, I don't think I'll be seeing this in theaters. It has 33 on RT and a 38 at MC. I don't always agree with the high scores they give (didn't like Selma, Birdman or The Theory of Everything), but their low scores are usually spot-on. This may be one of the few exceptions (like Man of Steel) where I listen to the score before seeing the movie. After wasting $17 on an IMAX ticket to Jupiter Ascending so that I'd have some context when listening to the score, I don't want to do that again. I'm tired of seeing trashy big-budget movies at the theater and always feeling disappointed afterwards. This might be the first year where I just entirely avoid blockbusters I'm on the fence about. The fanboy need for me to watch movies simply because they have a lot of buzz behind them is increasingly diminishing.

I didn't go and see Thor: The Dark World, and I think I'll likewise be skipping Avengers, Mad Max, Tomorrowland, Jurassic World, Terminator, Ant-Man, Pan, The Man from UNCLE, Mockingjay Pt. 2 & Star Wars (always preferred Star Trek before JJ Abrams became involved).

The only big films I'll probably be checking out are Mission: Impossible 5 (solely because of Christopher McQuarrie, as I hated Ghost Protocol), Victor Frankenstein, Spectre & The Martian. I'm still unsure about Fantastic Four. I hate the screenwriter & the changes that they made, but I also like fresh approaches & more grounded, less comedic superhero films.

So, back to Chappie... hopefully I'll enjoy the score!

Got it!
Wow ... Zimmer and co-composers have done a super job (except that last track ;)
Glad to hear Zimmer back in this style of rhythmic/melodic composing after a disappointing Interstellar ... IMO/YMMV!

I really like the Blade Runner vibe this has. I'm not sure what you guys are hearing, but the only contemporary influence of Hans' I hear in this is Mombasa in the first few tracks. Other than that, it sounds a lot like his output from the 90s. I enjoy it, and it's certainly grown on me since I first played it, but it doesn't have the wow factor that some of his more recent scores have had on me. Maybe because I haven't seen the film, so I have no emotional connection to it.

Guys I have a off topic question :) In this film there are a few sound effects like atari game or so. Few days ago while Im driving, I heard a music in the radio, it has exactly that effects and it was beautiful. I couldnt catch the name of the song, I know its a long shot asking like that but if anyone knows it please get in touch with me :)
