Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of Spartacus is a 1992 concept album produced and composed by Jeff Wayne with Lyrics by Gary Osborne, telling the story of Roman gladiator, Spartacus.

It starred Anthony Hopkins, Catherine Zeta-Jones (in her first recording role), Fish, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, and others. It was also the first Jeff Wayne release that is not related to his musical adaptation of The War of the Worlds. Based on a story outline by Jeff Wayne, the script was written by writer Brian Sibley and playwright John Spurling with Sibley responsible for the script of 'Animal & Man', 'The Eagle & the Hawk' and 'The Appian Way' and Spurling largely responsible for the script of 'The Parting of the Ways' and 'The Last Battle'. Also starring in the album is Chris Thompson and Jo Partridge, who appeared in The War of the Worlds. Originally, Thompson had a singing role, but his song was dropped from the final version of the album. It is rumoured that Thompson possesses the only copy of his song.

The artists for the album were Gino D'Achille, Christos Achilleos and Andrew Wheatcroft, art directed by Richard Evans

It could only be Jeff Wayne who is audacious enough to try this. He made a modern masterpiece with War Of The Worlds. What's to stop him trying with a story that is 2080 years old? Did he pull it off? Surely he could not have a star studded line up like he had on WOTW.

The answer is he tried his best! It is great in parts, good in most parts and then there is the odd weak part. But with WOTW he just had a Book to take on, a thirties Orson Welles radio show and a not so good science fiction film. Meaning most people hadn't either read, heard or seen. This time he was take on Hollywood legends, Kirk Douglas and the rest, Stanley Krubicks vision and one of the most famous lines from a film. So most people have seen the film either at Christmas or some other past bank holiday. Also if men in skirts wearing sandals is not your thing?

It was released in 1992, the single from it flopped, wrong decade for such a grand idea. He has the best voice he could get with Anthony Hopkins as the narrator, such a rich and distinctive voice. Catherine Zeta Jones does a great job in the female role and sings OK. Which was a surprise as I got it in back in 93, long before Moulin Rouge. There is the Ladysmith Black Mambazo singing on the fantastic song Going home. Fish from Marillion plays the part of Crixus the Gaul.

The CD is a joy, when you are in the mood. The narration and the music is excellent and paints the pictures of Roman Life and the journey of Spartacus. It is very exciting in parts, edge of your seat stuff, even though you know the outcome. It is just let done by some lame songs that's all, there are the odd dance number{for All Time} or the power ballad[Two Souls with a Single Dream ] that fail. The booklet I got with this CD is a mini novel, with some really good graphics and the printed words spoken and sung, also has a rogues galley so you can put faces to the voices.

Overall it is very good CD, seeing you have seen the film. So it won't ruin the plot, skip the weak bits if needed, in my case there are about two disappointments, but I can grin and bear it. Otherwise it would be 5 stars.
Appian way is truly great.... Does the album work, yes definitely!

Thanks for the share... didn't even really know about this.

Despite the apparent flop upon release, I'm sure it has better themes than most contemporary film scores and am looking forward to checking it out.
