Another Lesson From the Mandarin should come right before Five Shadows For Six Souls.

The first half was used as ''the Arrival of the Mandarin'', before Five Shadows For Six Souls. And the second half in the Mandarin hack into the TV airwaves as ''A message to Mr. Vice President/There's just one lesson left''. I think, it fits Another Lesson from the Mandarin.

So whats the Chrono order of this set.....

That's what I'm still trying to figure out. I've added "Another Lesson from the Mandarin" and "Dr. Wu" to the FYC tracklist, and switched around "Five Shadows For Six Souls" and "Misfire", but where do the suite tracks fit in? Or do they fit in at all? Are all of the OST tracks superfluous? Why were certain tracks duplicated, do those contain new music, and if so how much?

That is the problem. To notice why the tracks are different, you have to listen to them. Track titles alone are irrelevant, because some of the FYC track titles are inaccurate. T-1000 does mention noteworthy comments about them at the end of his post, but you have to listen to the tracks yourself.

Also, most of the 'suites' are tracks from the OST that are too meddled with to occupy a single spot in chronological order, since they are comprised of different moments in the film. I believe he mentioned that as well.

Many thanks for this!! I read the posts, I'm not criticizing anyone, just clarifying something. Based on what I read, are all of the (OST) tracks just duplicates/suites? Should one just keep the FYC tracks for the most listenable film edit version? Not complete I realize, but best film edit, in order, as good as it gets so far?

hey T-1000, thanks a bunch for sharing this! I did have a question for those of you who have heard the different score releases and are generally familiar with this music. I love hearing a complete score, but have no need for endless repetition, or practically-identical alternates and such. From the main list of cues, where there is the OST and FYC version, it seems like the FYC's are longer, and thus I would probably ditch the shorter versions. Is there any music left Out of the FYC versions that I'd be missing?
Is it true that the Suites at the end of this collection are comprised only of edited versions of already existing cues, and thus have no actual new material written for them. How about the End Credits, is there any new music after the "Can You Dig It" opening, or is it just reprises of previous cues?
Just curious, I certainly appreciate all the music being included, so not complaining, just wanting to see what excess repetition can be eliminated to make this a more streamlined listen, yet still as complete as possible. Thanks!

Oh boy... this is a tough one. I get the aversion to repetitiveness, but unfortunately, that's something that Tyler does very frequently.

Is there any music left Out of the FYC versions that I'd be missing?

Given that some of the names on the FYC are misleading, chances are that you would erase something accidentally. From what I've heard, some tracks are meddled with a little, which is why I'll go into detail. I'll only focus on the tracks that have similar names, which I believe are the ones you're unsure about.

05 Attack on 10880 Malibu Point (OST)[4:36] / 04 Attack on 10880 Malibu Point (FYC)[5:39]
Best version: This cue is very straightforward. The FYC version has approx. 1:03 min more of content, so it's safe to discard the OST version.

07 Isolation (OST)[2:01] / 06 Isolation (FYC)[2:11]
Best version: Likewise, the FYC version has ten more seconds of material; it's safe to discard the OST version.

11 Misfire (OST)[3:28] / 10 Misfire (FYC)[2:17]
Best version: The OST version of 'Misfire' is a combination of the FYC tracks 'Misfire' and '5, 4, 3, 2, 1!', respectively. "Unfortunately", the '5, 4, 3, 2, 1!' track is extended, which means that to avoid repetition, you'd have to erase the OST version of 'Misfire' and keep the FYC tracks as independent cues.

13 The Mechanic (OST)[3:44] / 12 The Mechanic (FYC)[3:58]
Best version: The OST version is a combination of FYC tracks 'Five Shadows for Six Souls', 'The Mechanic' and an unknown cue (which goes through 1:10 - 1:35 min.). However, even though the FYC has more material from that particular scene (including up to the part when Tony confronts Trevor), it also contains a shortened version of the cue heard during the transition to "Present Day" (a longer version of this cue can be heard on the 'Extremis' suite). In summary, both tracks have different material, and you won't want to erase the FYC version; if you don't care at all about the unknown cue on the OST version (which is only about 25 seconds), you can erase that one.

17 Dive Bombers (OST)[2:24] / 16 Dive Bombers (FYC)[4:54]
Best version: The FYC track contains a big chunk of the 'Return' suite, the latter half of the 'Leverage' suite and the OST version of 'Dive Bombers'. Without getting into detail, the only thing you can safely discard from all this is the OST version of Dive Bombers, since that cue is included as is on the FYC version.

19 Culmination (OST)[2:30] / 18 Culmination (FYC)[4:34]
Best version: By far, the FYC version is the best. It even includes the 'House Party Protocol' cue. You can safely discard the OST version.

23 Stark (OST)[4:32] / 22 Stark (FYC)[2:37]
Best version: The FYC version is a film version of this track. I'd recommend you keep both.

*23 Stark (OST)[4:32] / 37 Iron Man 3 (FYC)[2:37]
Just as a note, the 'Iron Man 3' track is a version of the OST 'Stark' track with an alternate ending. The FYC track is also weirdly butchered at the 1:30 mark, but it's heard properly on the 'End Credits Pt. I & II' track.

20 Heat and Iron (FYC)[3:20] / 25 Battle Finale (OST)[3:58] | 21 Heat and Iron (OST)[5:44] / 24 Battle Finale (FYC)[3:50]
Guess what: these tracks are a mess, given that the FYC versions have the titles switched! For starters, between 'Heat and Iron' (FYC) and 'Battle Finale (OST), the FYC version has multiple missing segments, so it's safe to discard that track and keep the OST one. Then, between 'Heat and Iron' (OST) and 'Battle Finale' (FYC), the material is exactly the same. The OST track is longer because it includes the cue heard when Tony and Rhodes are on Trevor's speedboat, which is why you should keep this one and discard the FYC version instead.

28 New Beginnings (OST)[3:55] / 27 New Beginnings (FYC)[3:53]
Best version: Both cues are basically similar, but the FYC version has an alternate ending (after the 3:08 mark). I'd recommend you keep both.

30 End Credits Pt. I & II [9:31]
Best version: The End Credits suite doesn't have anything new, and should be comprised of the following tracks: 'Can You Dig It?' (OST), 'Iron Man 3 (FYC)', '5, 4, 3, 2, 1!' (FYC), 'Misfire' (FYC), Iron Man 3 (OST). As I mentioned before, it includes the fixed version of the 'Iron Man 3' (FYC) track, so I'd suggest you keep it. (Besides, someone took their time and effort to rip it, and it's supposedly in better quality, so what harm could it do? xD)

01 Iron Man 3 (OST)[2:24] / 38 Iron Man 3 March (FYC)[2:01]
Best version: The FYC version is missing the intro (about 21 seconds). You can discard that one and keep the OST version instead.

For now, I guess that's it. As always, I tried to be as explicit as possible. I did make a more detailed comparison between both the OST and FYC sets, but I decided not to post it since the sessions infamously (has anyone heard from COURAGE?) erupted soon after I finished that, and I figured that info would be moot. Lucky for me, I never deleted the file. However... if anybody's still interested in that comparison, just send me a PM :)

FYC = For Your Consideration. Basically, they're promotional CDs sent out to those eligible to nominate/vote on Best Score awards (Academy Awards, Golden Globes, etc). Sometimes, the contents are exactly the same as the retail CD, other times (as in the case of the Iron Man 3 FYC) there can be significant differences. Occasionally, they'll show up on eBay, which is where I found the Iron Man 3 FYC promo that I posted here: Thread 185296 Enjoy! :)
