Can someone explain to me what's the difference between CD1/2 & CD3/4.

I know Disc 3/4 says 'Irwin Kostal Digital Re-Recording', so is this basically a newer recording of the score? Was it ever used in the movie or was it recorded for this Legacy Collection release only?

Disc 1 and Disc 2 are the original 1940 recording featuring the music as it is in the movie; Discs 3 and 4 are some new digital re-recording of the same songs that was done in 1982, digitally and in stereo. The two sound very alike, the one being more truer to the original and the second being a very faithful re-recording.
That's correct. If I recall, this was at a time when the technology of the time simply could not restore the original soundtrack to a level of fidelity that Disney felt comfortable using in their theatrical rereleases and so this 1982 re-recording was used for the theatrical rerelease of the film at that time.

Did the releases past 1982 used the re-recording again? As far as I know, past the 90s and 00s, the sound in the Fantasia movie has always been the original now.
According to Wikipedia the 1982 and 1985 releases used the new rerecording whereas the 1990 release saw the return of the original recording but this time with digital restoration techniques.

I couldnt understand that either when I was starting to release my editions and people were constantly asking for mp3 versions. The reason is simple: some people dont know how to create mp3 and/or are too lazy to do it.

About this release: thank you very much. Crap, I thought I wouldnt need to buy Fantasia again. But judging from the quality I found within hack3rman's download, its slightly better than the first CD version I bought all those decades ago. And its not even a Loudness War release like all the other Disney Legacy titles. Add to that that it contains two additional pieces for cut animation sequences! For me, a Fantasia buff, this really is a huge treat and so I will buy it again.

Having listened, I have to say, I am a tad disappointed the first two discs are the last release of the OST repackaged. Obviously the original masters are lost so they couldn't do a proper stereo mix of the music so the channel jumping of certain instruments still happens. Having said that, it's great to have the re-recording alongside the original recording and it's one I will still add to my Legacy Collection collection (making the total so far three with another three to go)

The original masters were never stereo. They have always been a collection of several monaural tracks - Disney practically invented multitracking 15 years before it became available within a prototype by Ampex. And since several instruments follow onscreen events, the mix just has to reflect this. One thing about the general sound quality... Disney made a copy of the original master via cheap telephone cables. That copy is now the only thing they still have, I believe the original master was destroyed or lost which is a shame because reportedly, the sound quality of that master was a lot better.

Still, Fantasia and especially the sound process developed for the movie, "Fantasound", were revolutionary. Disney used multitracking and overdubbing, both before they were industry standards, additionally, they invented the click track. Instruments / parts of the orchestra were supposed to move around the audience during the initial Roadshow release which is of course surround sound.

But Im talking, read all about it here: Fantasound - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fantasound)

I checked out the Kostal re-recording from the library and this is their explanation (paraphrased, of course): Fantasia (1940) thrilled theater goers with new sound, the likes of which had never been heard before at its time. However, technology of that era was very limited and the highest sound quality could not be achieved. For the special 1982 release, Disney wanted to use the now advanced digital technology to present Fantasia again, recorded with full surround sound to present the excitement of the original Fantasia in a whole new way. Kostal's conducting was for this special CD package and was not featured in the movie, but used the same score and tried to precisely match Stokowski's original tempos and style to appeal to a new generation. That should be about it and the best I can remember the insert to the disc set. If I have time, I'll look it up again and write a more accurate description. Hope this helps for now!
