I just wanted to know what you guys think. I personally think its not a real final fantasy becuase they got rid of the one thing that made final fantasy unique, its turn based battle system. I think this game should have been called something else but had on it "from the makers of final fantasy" instead of FFXI

Its a real Final Fantasy game because it has "Final Fatasy" and than a number in Roman numorials. The battle system has nothijng to do with it. They can change whatever they want and it is still a FF game...if they use the title.

So you're also saying Final Fantasy XII isn't a real Final Fantasy? :(

God, you're a horrible person!

I assume your refering to Trekks post, I bet he/she has never read anything about FFXII yet and therefor wouldn't know that FXII is a new take on the FFXI battle system.

I agree with the first answer of Tyrannicide I tried to think of anything to add but he already wrote it all

so what your saying is that if they took a game like mario and but final fantasy XIII on it it would be considered a final fantasy.

technically, people are right when they say "Final Fantasy <number>" means it is a proper final fantasy, and thats fine

i personally kindof agree with trekk in that i (just an opinion) consider it to be a seperate thing as opposed to part of the series, just seems like a different type of game to me, much like the resident evil survivor games

It depends how far you've played.

At first it does, then it doesn't, and then it does.

Another thing, I know what you mean. I dont think they should have made it the next FF in the series(number wise). It should have just been "Final Fantasy Online" Not "Final Fantasy XI", but since its FFXI, its a real FF game and not a side FF game like tactics.

And your just saying its not an FF game based on past experience, now they are trying to move away from the stereotype FF mainstream style of game. This way, its not the same old same old game, with different characters and a different world. SE are recreating the FF series in a way that will still be loved and such by everyone.

They have every right to change the battle system. The only that i think is making it really different is the fact that its going to be online. Personally, i don't like that. Maybe some people do. But it's going to be different from the latest Fantasies like 7, 8, 9, 10 and so on because its allowing you to choose who ad what your going to be.

How DARE they go back to letting you choose what you're going to be! That wasn't in FFI, the first game in the series at all!

I've never played FFXI for a few reasons:

*I'm not a huge MMORPG fan
*I'm running my ADSL on a LAN and therefore the modem is too far away from my PS2
*Too expensive

My thoughts? Yeah I suppose it is.......

But let's hope they never make another one and call it FF.

I don't really think of it as such. Obviously it is, in the sense that it is a major iteration in the series. But I think treating it as something of a fork, as in FFT, etc., would have been more suitable.

Not that it particularly concerns me, either way.

I consider FFXI a real Final Fantasy...just cause it's online and has a different battle system doesn't mean it's not a Final Fantasy game...look at the first three Final Fantasy games, they have different battle systems yet they are still considered true FFs...

They didn't change it so you can go back; the design of it was to allow you to play multiple jobs. some people like me get bored with some and move on to another job, otherwise you'd have to start all over and do all of the quests yet again... beef your reputation again... it's just a hassel.

and what makes this a final fantasy is the storyline that's built into the system.. a group of warriors gather together to take on the new 'evil' and fight for what's right. the only difference is that the evil is so great that you have millions of people trying to help out. some would think to differ from my opinion becuase all you seem to be able to do is run around and kill stuff; but the mobs in FFXI are so advanced that you wouldn't be smart to take them on if you weren't capable of beating them.

In Answer to Chorns:
Yes the battles systems in lots of final fantasies are different from the last but they are still turn based they just changed how attacks, magic and jobs worked, in FF XI they went to real time which is a complete 180 degree turn in the other direction which killed one of the unique one of a kind things Final Fantasy had cuz after all Final Fantasy was the first RPG and the first turn based battle system game.

what.

you must've missed the sarcasm in my post. :/

also, FFIII and V have the job system as well; it's not new for XI (though it's implemented slightly differently)

XI is a reall ff because it says "FINAL FANTASY" you cant beat that im sorry. also, who give a flying chuck if changed the battle system. if you look at most of the ff's they changed the magic system in all of them but they are still final fantasy......so BOOYAHH!!

I dont think it is exactly a fina fantasy game, yes is has the logo but what? the game itself is more that just the logo. there are no main characters, no main story , no classic battles no fanfare, not a real party... OMG this game sould be called "Final Fantasy XI: Online" and in order to receive that name there shoul be a real "Final Fantasy XI" game in the world of vana diel (a one or 2 players game with main characters, a solid story etc etc etc)

I believe you are correct. Final Fantasy Online is the title of the game...And I think it is a real Final Fantasy that fits in with the Series. Although in my opinion they could have made the game much better in many aspects of the game :) Oh well...I still love to play it

Yes! FFXI is a real FF game, it is just different and online, but, then again, no two FFs are the same and that's the way it should be.

No main story? What level are you? This game has quite a story. Go get rank 10 in every city. Go play all the Zilart missions. Go play all the Promathia missions. Each one is a side story that adds on to the main story of the game. And each "side story" has it's own main characters. It just happens that you're not exactly them, though you do play an integral part. The story imo, is pretty fantastic if you take the time to pay attention.

And really, "Is it a real FF?", why do you care? Is it really such a universe shattering thing if it is or isn't? it's a slightly different format than the other game, and some of you like it and some hate it, but it's got most of the ties ins with the previous FF games. And you know what else? You don't like FFXI because it's online (not saying that anyone here does, but if you do)? Well I don't like FFVIII because it's crap. It's still a FF whether I like it or not. And it the end, I don't really care.

Good day.

I'd love to. Soon as I move back in with my dad I'll have cable and we can play again. Haven't played in fortever and when I try to log in it says my GB is older than dirt and I have to get a new one. Did that once on 56k. Never doing it again.

i think that the trade mark of an ff game is a good story with involving characters that u really get attached 2, so there fore while it is loads of fun ff11 should not be considered an ff game

Refer to the point I made above. FFXI has a FANTASTIC story if you take the time to do all the missions.

Cid Highwind
05-18-2005, 04:26 AM
yes thats right and in away you make your characters history as well the story is in your hands more or less. I love the FFXI cuz it is has the best graphics on a FF game in a long time. I agree Nanaki Muyo on that all you have to do is pay attention to what happens around you to see the story and try to make the best of it like make you char. stronger make a name for yaself on there after you have gotten all there is to get and all there is to do then you are part of the story kinda people might even try to follow in your foot steps.
