#1 Amiibos are optional, no one's forcing anyone to buy them, and they're not even remotely necessary for game completion.
#2 Amiibos are another form of augmented play, and to a collector, look pretty neat. $10 for a Link amiibo that doubles as a NFC augment device and charming shelf trinket is pretty reasonable.
#3 Amiibos aren't supposed to be game exclusive... The idea is that the amiibo you already own, is going to work for several games, not just the one.
#4 Amiibos are toys made by a toy company. Are you really bitching because Nintendo is trying to get people to buy MORE than just a system, and a few games. As someone who calls themselves a Nintendo fan, I've only EVER bough a system, a few games, and maybe a screen protector. Myself, as well as many other self-proclaimed Nintendo fans don't need to buy every plush, case, figurine, or Pokemon card I see. I can appretiate Nintendo's attempt at coaxing me into buy into more than just one hardware unit and a few software units.
And spoiler alert, Nintendo doesn't target aging man-children specifically. Their targeted audience is everyone pretty much from the age of birth to the age of 'Im-so-old-im-about-to-damn-die.' Nintendo saw how Spyro of all franchises was pretty much dead, and saw it rise into glory as a software with a merchandise gimmick like Skylanders, and boo-fucking-hoo Nintendo decided to take a page from their book and apply it broadly to cover all participating Nintendo libraries.
Amiibos aren't the worse thing to ever happen to the game industry, because Amiibos aren't an original idea or even practice, and it stands to reason that Amiibos are one of THE BEST things to ever happen to the game industry, because the best thing for THE INDUSTRY is to make money and expand the audience, and according to all the news articles regarding Amiibo success (
http://www.joystiq.com/2015/01/16/nintendo-amiibo-sales-outpace-smash-bros-wii-u/) and sell outs/shortages, Amiibos are doing just that, infact they've sold more than twice the amount of Amiibo units than copies sold of Smash Bros. Even the creator of Smash Bros Sakurai is having trouble filling his collection (
http://www.joystiq.com/2015/01/26/smash-bros-creator-sakurai-also-has-trouble-tracking-down-amiib/).
And by no means am I supporter of Amiibo. I don't really care, i'm just ignoring them because I don't need them, I'm fine not buying into the fad. But to go on and say they're the worst thing ever is a little ridiculous to me, despite their success, and really, I like to see Nintendo get a few wins from time to time.
The only true crime with amiibos is that they're NFC, an old technology, and Nintendo is just now starting to experiment with it, where were these things 4 years ago?!
