A Medieval Christmas by the Boston Camerata, as I have written in this forum before, was much played on the Chicago Classical Radio station when it was new. There has never been anything like it. I was thrilled when this 1975 recording finally appeared on CD. If you like your holiday to reflect another, earlier age; a dark chapel candle it, smoke filled from swinging braziers, period instruments, chants and readings along with a variety of vocals solo & chorus.... this is it.

Christmas Set Five

The Christmas cantata Hodie (This Day) was composed in 1953-4 and is dedicated to Herbert Howells. Of all the works of RVW old age no other is so serene in outlook, so other-worldly. It’s motto might be ‘peace and good will to men’. It begins with a brass fanfare (that will knock off your socks) as prelude to the full chorus’s cries of ‘Nowell!’

I was lucky to see a live performance that was mesmerizing. The double choirs and three soloists and full orchestra (with concert organ) were stunning.

At this time of year when the darkness comes early and closes in tight we need light… and nothing is more remarkable than Illumina recorded in the beautiful Lady Chapel of Ely Cathedral featuring The Clare Choir directed by Timothy Brown.

Eighteen tracks that proclaim ‘And God said, Let there be light.’

Featuring brilliant music for voice that ranges from such composers as Thomas Tallis, John Rutter, Gustav Holst, Hildegard of Bingen to Gyorgy Ligeti: his ‘Lux aeterna’ used in the film classic 2001: A Space Odyssey.

‘But to me, heard afar
it was starry music,
angel’s song, comforting
as the comfort of Christ
when he spake tenderly
to his sorrowful flock;
the old words came to me
by the riches of time,
mellow’d and transfigured
as I stood on the hill.
Heark’ning in the aspect
Of eternal silence”
And on earth peace, good will toward men.’

-from Gerald Finzi’s In Terra Pax

As always, leave a message here if interested.

Just received your link and just to say Thank You again, I thought I'd give you the link to this one. It's the 1970s DG Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops "White Christmas" collection, very similar to the (not quite as good, I don't think) Boston Pops collections that John Williams did. Haven't seen it here before and I don't even know if the album still exists. It's flac and there's no password:

https://mega.co.nz/#!AIImxZwR!LTRbMfx1KdXJk-JtG7kxfg8JooPWhHYF5L_jsFP2tUw

I'll upload the covers tomorrow and maybe start a new thread, if you'd prefer, or you could even include it in one of your sets if you want.

Thank you for the treat!

The John Williams/Boston Pops recording has been valued over the years for its medley of Christmas carols by Alfred Burt. I have never heard of this composer and these carols have never played (to my ear) on the radio. 'A Christmas Greeting' was originally written as Christmas cards to the composer's family and friends. This suite shifts smoothly from one to the other without a break... and the standout is the tender and moving 'Some Children See Him'....

All in all a lovely disc that was produced by the late George Korngold in 1980... when the world was young.

by Hugo Friedhofer

Possibly the BEST Christmas film.
From a story by Robert Nathan (Portrait of Jennie)
and directed by the remarkable Henry Koster.

Atmospheric, beautiful black & white photography, a lovely fantasy, romantic, deeply touching and so very funny- with a marvelous score.

Benjamin Britten
Choral Music from Kings College, Cambridge
Sir David Willcocks
Philip Leger

A Ceremony of Carols

This is always a Live Performance from England (repeated later for those not inclined to enjoy the time shift) broadcast over the radio. While Britten is not my favorite British composer (he and Finzi never hit it off) these holiday music offerings are very amiable.

1) A Ceremony of Carols Op. 28 for treble voices and harp
13) Hymn to Saint Cecila Op. 27 for chorus
14) Rejoice in the lamb Op. 30 Festival Cantata

I love this work. Had the lp in college but it took forever for this recording to appear on compact disc due to a copyright issue with the author of the words; who was a nut case in an asylum when he wrote them. It is charming, with music that speaks:

“For I shall consider my cat Jeoffrey…
for he is a servant of the living God…
for I am possessed of a cat, surprising in beauty,
from whom I take occasion to bless Almighty God."

This is followed by some Disney-eque stuff about a mouse that is great fun.

15) Te Deum in C
16) Jubilate in Deo
17) Missa Brevis in D for boys’ voice and chorus.

Entire booklet is enclosed.

Leave message here if interested.
