One of the most characteristic features of Karl Amadeus Hartmann's work is the way
in which he forges sometimes extremely contrasting stylistic elements and techniques from
various periods of music history into a seamless unit. Moreover, one melody is found in
all his symphonies, in which it is concealed to varying degrees. This melody is based on
the Jewish song "Elijahu hanavi" about the prophet Elijah, whom the Jews anxiously await
because he will bring redemption. Thanks to the presence - whatever its form - of this
theme in the vast majority of his works, Hartmann's resounding legacy can be heard as an
abstract and highly impressive work of art.

Music Composed by
Karl Amadeus Hartmann

Played by the
Radio Filharmonisch Orkest, Hilversum

With
Kismara Pessati (contralto)

Conducted by
Markus Stenz
James Gaffigan
Michael Schnwandt
Christoph Poppen
Osmo Vnsk
Ingo Metzmacher

"This set is full of fine things. The Brazilian alto Kismara Pessatti is properly harrowing in the
cantata-like First Symphony, whose opening lines from Walt Whitman – ‘I sit and look out
upon all the sorrows of the world’ – could stand as a motto for them all. Markus Stenz displays
a subtle handling of the strings-only Fourth, with its first-movement violin solo that recalls
Vaughan Williams’s Lark amid the ruins of war. Christoph Poppen shows a masterly balance
of the monumental processional and the polyphonic percussionfest that make up the Sixth.
Osmo Vnsk confidently synthesises the even-denser Dionysiac frenzy and Apollonian calm
that comprise No.7."
