Just wanted to post a general discussion thread to see what people are thinking about for the movie!
I can barely contain my excitement. John Williams is a true maestro, so I see no point in doubting him.
Definitely going all out for the premiere. Gonna order a custom lightsaber and dress up :P

I am glad they hired williams who will give the purest sound possible unlike giacchinno who records very badly. Im affraid though that we ll get a similar story line: a good guy becoming a bad guy being defeated and redeeming.

^WHUT? Who else could take over if something happens to Williams? I mean he's 85...but seriously, he is alive, who else would they hire?
and yes, I think it will follow the timeline of the previous trilogy. I guess just watch a new hope and the phantom menace if you want to get a feel of what I think the film will be like.

Most people don't realize that Giacchino has already composed a Star Wars score. He composed and arranged the score for Star Tours II at the Disney Parks! And I thought it sounded great! If anyone was to replace John Williams for the future Star Wars films, it should be him!

From an interview I read with director JJ he said he was going to move away from the CGI extras of the newer 3 movies and use real people for everything. Expecting an old school feel to this with a new age twist of course. Looking forward to it much more than phantom menace.

Yeah, it's pretty amazing that the man's 82 years old and still composing. I'm pretty interested to hear what themes Williams comes up with, or how he'll retool old ones.

The one part of the trailer that I did find especially pleasing was the SFX. Thank God Abrams isn't trying to do his own thing with the sound effects. The X-Wing and Millenium Falcon flyby shots sound great.

I think the new lightsaber works, as long as the Sith holding it is the only one who has a saber like that, the same way Count Dooku had a curved lightsaber handle () but nobody else did. Although if everyone has a lightsaber that looks like a sword, it'll just look stupid.

Which is why I'm not sure if Abrams was the best choice for this movie...

Curved light saber didn't look nearly as dumb as trying to make the saber look like a sword with a cross guard.

Why don't they make light sabers with actual lazer sword designs? Why confine to a skinny little stick?
When the sword is drawn, why not give someone a scimitar?

The Inquisitor has a convincing sci-fi saber. That was a way better hand guard than this shit.

The shots that weren't the ships, looked like a cheap, low budget movie.
At any point when the human characters were looking back, I was expecting youtube's FreddieW to pop out and turn it all into a parody.

He should really stick to Star Trek.

It actually makes a TON of sense. Having practiced European fencing in college and Japanese kendo for the last eight years, I can tell you from practical experience that having a hand guard at the base of your blade is absolutely imperative to prevent your enemy from just sliding his sword down your blade and cutting your hand off. (It's one of the biggest complaints I have about traditional lightsabers but they're so cool I was always willing to give it a pass / that and there ARE techniques I've learned in Japanese sword fighting where you can survive without a hand guard, you just have to be extremely good and very cautious and very very very aggressive).

THE PROBLEM with the specific design we see here is that there is an individual emitter head for each laser beam that could easily be cut off thus rendering the hand guard a mood point. A better design would have been to have one emitter just like a classic Lightsaber but then have a prism or something that splits the blade in three ways but doesn't leave a gap of any kind between the main blade laser and the little crossing lasers.

The light saber looks more like a sword now.

I'm not going to argue that it does look a bit daft, but as pointed out it's more than aesthetics.

saber-proof armor?

Didn't they introduce Cortosis in the EU? That's used to make saber-proof armour and weaponry (the CIS even constructed an advanced Battle Droid made of cortosis IIRC). There's also Phrik alloy, which I believe is also used to make saber-resistant armour and weapons (IE the Magnaguards' electrostaffs)

knight's templar?

In a nutshell, they beat you to it: the old Jedi Order.

To be honest, the best shots were of the X-Wings and the new stormtroopers, but the teaser did not show a lot. Most of the other effects all look unfinished. Somebody pointed out that the Guardians of the Galaxy Teaser was similar, with unfinished shots. This is why I'd prefer they had waited: the lack of polish on some of those shots and the insubstantial content of the majority of it works against it. It does have my interest piqued though, and I hope a more complete trailer comes out in the near future, but not too near.

See, I knew sword enthusiasts, practioners and artisans would talk about it.

Any sword without a gaurd is just asking to have your hands cut off.

But, I thought Lucas was going for something different. For 6 movies, 3 tv series, and so many games, it became an art form to fight with a lightsaber without a guard. It became something new that really WAS in a galaxy far far away.

And if saber's can be cut at the base that emits the light, then what's to stop that dinky little guard? It's so exposed.
All you see is the base of the lightsaber and barely the little light guard.

It's more or less something that was just created to draw attention and appeal to dumb people.
It's nothing elegant. It's cheap and visual antics. It's a marketing gimmick because if they throw it in the teaser, everyone will love it and will decide to go see the movie because they created an "awesome" lightsaber.

The base would have to be created out of something stronger than the light it emits.

That dude in the other forum has a better idea about "modernizing" lightsabers.
You don't make it out of something destructible.

I remember seeing a sword in a movie where it had spring-loaded daggers pop out at the base. Above the handle so it was essentially just an extension of the blade itself.
Like the blade had babies. Or tiny T-rex arms.
Three blades, guard, handle.
That's how the dinky lightsaber should have been constructed.

Although, in the movie, that design of spring-loaded couldn't have been too effective. Maybe for one fight.
I'm under the impression that the spring-loaded mechanism would be cheap and wear out quickly.

This design in the teaser trailer is just stupid.
Stupid!!!

This comment and others similar to it are the reasons why people often regard science fiction and comic book fans in the same way you regard the large smelly guy with the tin foil hat who talks to himself as he pushes a shopping cart full of junk down the street.

When was it sleeping? I was under the impression it was a constant entity.

Then what's the point for it awakening in the first place?

I am to understand this long after Ep 3 where most Jedi are known to be dead and after 6 where the "new hope" escapes and has babies with his sister.

If anything is to have "awaken" in the title, it would be a prequel that predates The Phantom Menace.
Like the very first Jedi being born into existence.

It was also sleeping during Ep 4-6 since any Jedi was in hiding (after Order 66 in Ep 3).

Was there any official statement from JJA that this movie would include anything from the extended universe?

I still think the base+guard should be made out of the saber-proof material from the EU.

A skilled Jedi/Sith can still cut off those tiny little guard pieces.
If they can do all sorts of fancy shit, they can do that.
And make it a typcial 3 minute sword fight until the guard gets chopped up.

I also want to see a rapier saber now that we have a claymore.
