Yeah, anyone get any use out of this thing?

It claims "Extreme Magic Defense", and has some snazzy (for the time) casting graphics, but it doesn't actually do anything.

What's up with that?

Oh, and for those who haven't found it, it's somewhere in the Northern Crater.

I remember getting that and I was all excited but it turned out to be a useless materia stone. Maybr there's some kind of awesome combo that no one has thought of that uses it or something.

Man, I wanna play through Final Fantasy VII again. >_>

I think it just increases your magical defense. You don't actually see anything happening because it's just a protective spell, but try casting some powerful magic on your own characters and see if you take less damage. Not really sure about this...

I've done all that, it has zero net effect on damage taken.

LOL. Useless then, I suppose. I always got it, but I never really used it much. Although occasionally I did try it, figuring maybe it would help out somehow.

Shield takes something like 60,000 exp or ap (cant remember, been a long time since i played FFVII) to master, and once its masterd you can use it.

It does help a little i suppose, but i wouldnt spend time over it.

But wait a second though. If he talked about the snazzy visual effects, then obviously he already has the spell.

I think what he meant was if you have the materia when you cast the spell it's worthless UNLESS you cast the spell after you've mastered the materia.

Agent0042

I don't think so. Why would the spell itself be any different after you master it? Level 2 activates it and Level 3 masters it. If that's the case, that's really strange, and unlike any other materia.

All I know is that its a bitch to master when you are trying to get master magic materia... along with Full Cure its the hardest to master (100000AP).

I think its supposed to make a character invincible to PHYSICAL and elemental attacks...I'm too lazy to try it though, someone else do it and tell me what happens.

Maybe it is the same with the Full cure materia from the Cosmo Canyon. You have to wait there, too. But I can't remember right now....

I never use it, but I always master this one, because you have to, if you want the magic master materia at the end. ;)

maybe its just there so you play the game longer to get a perfect game or maybe its only good on a specific weapon or armor or it might just be there to look good for effects and generally piss you off

Cloud 9 - if it's physical and elemental, then why does it say extreme magic defense? This is really strange. I'm gonna see if I can get to the bottom of this...

Way ahead of ya!

Shield materia creates a protective shield around target ally that absorbs all magical attacks and negates many physical attacks.

Cloud 9

I confirmed that it absorbs elemental attacks and nullifies (some?) physical attacks. Does junctioning a mastered Shield materia with a mastered Added Affect materia in your armor do anything? Probably not, since the Shield affect only lasts a limited time when you cast it. But I haven't tried it.

Well, in all actuality the materia is pure genius.

if you all remember at the end of the game we all face Tonberry ( god he's so cool ^^) and his magic "Everyone's Grudge" did quite a bit of damage. Even with a barrier at level 99 he killed my cloud. He did half damage to tifa and vincent in my party, but they had uber armor. So what does it do?

it basically cuts the magic in half no matter what. no i lied, it doesn't block knife :( and it does screw up elemental magic. It's a good materia. Especially if you use Shield-all, then you can battle Ruby Weapon relentlessly. It's a good asset.

but it sucks for any other thing in the game
^_^V

oh if you do added effect to your armor, just thought i'd add, and you combine it with this materia, i BELIEVE im not sure i have to double check this, all elementals are useless against you...i'll check it out

Tonberrys are the bane of my existence...I'm not sure what determines how much damage everyone's grudge does though, I think its based on your magic stat. The higher your magic, the more damage it does to you. This is just a guess, because I magic sourced Cloud's magic to 255 and Tonberry would do 9999 to him every time.

I don't think you can added affect shield in your armor, but I haven't checked.

Having recently beat both Emerald and Ruby Weapons, I can tell you that shield has absolutely no effect on their magical and special attacks. Shield gives you some bonus to physical attacks (I took less damage from Ruby wp's tenticle slaps), but I saw no great elemental defense in either fight.

Shield might have been a lot more useful if you could have gotten it earlier in the game. Perhaps even another 'Materia Cave' like KOTR was in that you could only get to with a gold Choco.

If I remember correctly, one of the faqs that are I looked through said that it would make you peerless...... Anybody remember what that term means?

Basically it means that you become invincible for a short period of time. But I have yet to confirm that. It was only a short sentence and said nothing else. Does anybody have a FF7 game with a mastered shield materia now?

I used to until my copy dissappeared.
I'm pretty sure I used it when battling the Weapons and it helped a lot.
But it has been a long time since I got to play.
(I need to pick up a new copy of FFVII from work.)

That sucks.
My first discs of Chrono Cross and FFVIII got all scratched up and wouldn't play.
When I got my PS2 Chrono Cross only froze a couple of times during the intro and FFVIII would stop reading after the memory card load.
I got them fixed at work.(We have a cool resurfacing machine.)
I also have a copy of FF Tactics that is completely scratched to hell, but, by some awesome miracle, it plays absolutely flawlessly.

Here's a pic of the resurfacer!

Yeah some cames are like that I had a Command and Conquer game and just about every centimeter is scratched but it worked fine but I had one little scratch on resident evil and it screwed up. Wonder why that is? The problem is that new ff games that old are hard to find anymore

No they aren't. Try ebgames.com or amazon.com

Also, you might as well just buy it full-price. You most certainly aren't going to find it cheap.
