Crap, this was a shitty score to master! The frequency balance wasnt the biggest problem, the mix was. This score has been mixed in such a strange way that the orchestra sounds almost like mono. Synths and choir create the stereo perspective. Very, very odd. And its not like they used some second-rate, unknown orchestra. No, they had the Berlin Philharmonic, which is one of the worlds' leading orchestras, under the baton of no one else than Sir Simon Rattle. The sound of the OST and the FYC have been a disgrace to their talents and to the lovely, beautiful music. Since the so-called "sessions" were released, which were nothing more than a combination of the FYC & the OST, I have desired to make my own version of this score. So here it is!

I think I managed to work my way around the flaws of the sessions (whose sound was perfectly retained on the FYC). The OST got rid of the biggest errors by adjusting the frequency response to counter them. But since mastering costs money, they only did the most necessary thing. And of course they made it as loud as possible using old-fashioned brickwall-limiting, leading to dynamic compression artifacts. And the sessions already were dynamically compressed! On my set, you wont have these errors. My set also features the best sound one can have using these files as sources. Its lovely, voluptuous when needed, crisp when needed. I too compressed dynamics - but by hand using automated faders. Much more effective, if you ask me.

The almost complete score (some snippets are still missing), including the most important alternates, occupies more than 80 minutes. In order for all music to fit on one CD, youd need one of those 90 minute CDs. In order to enable fans to use both, I prepared two different versions: one for the common 80 minute CDs, another for the rarer 90 minute CDs. The shorter doesnt contain the alternates, it also misses a track I deemed unworthy of inclusion: "Nights in Naples".

Though I have to say that the shorter version is my intended version, it just has superior flow.

Oh, and thanks to Fink without whom some tracks would have been sounding too thin and strident ;)

Here are the instruction on how to do assemble the "big" version:

1. download all archives
2. unpack the archives
3. increase the tracknumbers of the contents in the "SmellyPeople.rar" archive by 1, starting with "The 13th Essence" (Number 5 becomes 6, number 6 becomes 7, and so on)
4. move the 3 flac-files of the "MoreSmellyPeople.rar" into the folder containing the 17-track CD
5. copy the tags of the files inside the folder "Files for tagging ONLY!" to the 20-track-flac files.
6. youre done (you can now erase the aac-files used for tagging, they are of bad quality anyway)

Tracklist 80-minute-CD:

1. The Beginning
2. Grenouilles Childhood
3. Streets Of Paris
4. The Girl With The Plums
5. The 13th Essence
6. Experiment

With 'compression' I mean dynamic compression. Not compression like mp3 or aac. And the sessions seem to have been dynamically compressed right at the recording venue when the actual recording happened. The OST had an additional kind of dynamic compression, a kind that is very audible and doesnt sound very good. And that one is absent on my set.

And with 'mastered' I mean that the FYC, which was the basis for my set, doesnt seem to be mastered at all (mastered -> preparing and transfering audio from the final mix so that playback will sound well on most systems). I whipped it into shape, hence the term 'mastering' (for lack of a better expression).

Thank you, SonicAdventure. This score was new to me and the music was an interesting listen, while sonicwise everythings sounds clear and spacious. When listening to it I guessed that in general the abundance of synthesized sounds might make some aspects of the remastering more tricky than in purely accoustic scores, and then I couldn't help smiling about the additional problem you found with the mix in this one.

So, my question: if the stereo was wide for synths and choir and narrower for the orchestra and you gave more space to the orchestra, then are now synths and choir wider than they were? Or is it possible to modify the staging for arbitrary ranges of frequencies or instruments?

Thank you too for your contribution, Fink. Yep, not bad, not bad... ;)

Yeah, the mix on this one was truly horrible. Which seems to be the case quite often with their scores... Cloud Atlas suffers from the same problems (and some more).

To answer your question: its not possible to alter a finalized mix. One cannot, for example, bring brass to the foreground in case its obscured by choir. Engineers are also unable to 'move' an orchestra to the sides without 'moving' the synths too (like on this score). However, one can alter an existing stereo image - and I did so here. I increased stereo separation (without introducing any odd effects / errors caused by cheap 'stereo widening' tool) and manipulated the frequency response so that it appears that I altered the mix.

If someone finally delivers a method to take a final mix apart... wow, he would deserve any price the community can throw at him.

Thank you Sonic! This great score deluxe edition of yours brought back the memory of when I got to meet Tykwer, Heill and Klimek in Los Angeles during an interview. We then went to the Paramount lot for a pre-release screening of the film. Something I'd like to point out is that when these three composers work together, the end result is often quite good if not excellent, whereas when Heill and Klimek work without Tom, it is simply not as good.
