Review:
John Williams' Film Night has become one of the most eagerly-anticipated evenings of the Tanglewood season. Join Mr. Williams, the Boston Pops, and special guests for a celebration of the music of the silver screen.

Film Night began with a salute to director David Lean. The prelude from “Blythe Spirit” by Richard Addinsel and excerpts from Maurice Jarre’s beautiful “A Passage to India” and his sweeping “Lawrence of Arabia” thrilled concert-goers in the Koussevitzky Shed and lawn.

Williams continued his musical trek to Japan with selections from his Grammy Award winning score for Rob Marshall’s “Memoirs of a Geisha” featuring cellist Martha Babcock.

He concluded the first half of the night with his theme for the 2002 Winter Olympics, “Call of the Champions” with the Boston University Tanglewood Institute Young Artists Chorus followed by pieces he composed for director Steven Spielberg: “Hymn to the Fallen” (“Saving Private Ryan”) and “Dry Your Tears Afrika” (“Amistad). The Boston Children's Chorus was featured on the latter.

Following a brief intermission, Williams led the Boston Pops in a rousing take of Arthur Schwartz’s “That’s Entertainment” before settling in for a visit with an old friend, thrill-seeking archaeologist Indiana Jones.

Williams conducted pieces from three of the four “Indiana Jones” films: “Scherzo for Motorcycle and Orchestra” (“Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade”), “Marion’s Theme” (“Raiders of the Lost Ark”) and “The Adventures of Mutt” (“Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull”).

The break-neck pace of “Indiana Jones’ was followed by the romance of a “Celebration of Dance in the Movies.” Images of classic dance scenes from Hollywood films flashed across the Tanglewood screens.

Carlos Gardel’s tango heard in “Scent of a Woman,” and excerpts from George Gershwin’s “An American in Paris” and Ray Henderson’s “The Varsity Drag” spanned 65 years of Hollywood moviemaking.

Williams closed the night with the stellar #8220;Throne Room and Finale” from George Lucas’ 1977 sci-fi blockbuster “Star Wars.” (The 82-year-old Williams is at work on the score for the upcoming “Star Wars: Episode 7.”

Amid thunderous applause, Williams returned for the encore: The superb “With Malice Toward None” (“Lincoln”) and an audience favorite, “Flying Theme” (“E.T.”)

Just say Thank you and add reputation.

Enjoy!

Two .cue files for this. The first one has entries for the comments of the radio host after each theme (useful if your player allows filtering by title and you want to save 26 minutes). Those points are omitted in the second version for a clearer view but they will be played normally.

Copy the text and save it in the same location as the mp3 file as "Film Night At Tanglewood 2014 - (bso140802).cue" or edit the filename and the 5th line if needed.
