Black metal, death metal, thrash metal, speed metal, etc....

They're all just pretentious labels originally taken to try and distinguish a particular band from all the others. Then others jump on the bandwagon and people call it a genre. In truth, they're all just different styles in the same genre.

Anyway, I prefer something with vocals that someone actually sings rather than grunts, hisses, screams at the top of his lungs, etc. I also prefer a screaming lead guitar, fast non-repetitive riffs, and a sense that the guys I'm listening to aren't just churning out album after album of the same crap so it'll keep selling to the same people. That's why I always come back to 80's music.

Slayer fucking rules.

I don't listen to much metal at all.

These days all I hear people talking about is Dragon Force and I fucking hate them. =(

A Perfect Circle
Adema
After Forever
Ayreon
Deftones
Epica
Evanescence
Fuel
HIM
Ill Nino
Lacuna Coil
Linkin Park
Nightwish
Moonspell
Thalion
Therion
Tool

There's a little bit of alternatice in it, but you have to admit that Adema owns. It's from black to symphonic/melodic. I'm not really into speed or trash metal to be honest. I sometimes listen to Cradle of Filth but I can't listen for it too long. Since it feels like it's more of the same. I like the depth that can be found by most of these bands.

Dunno exactly what the recommended albums are at the moment but my latest purchases were Lacuna Coil - Comalies and Moonspell - The Antidote.

Whats the difference with metal and rock music?

If a band formed in the 80's are they metal? :erm:

I always thought the main difference was that metal had solos every 5 seconds, making it very boring to listen to. =)

I had a good friend once explain to me how most classical music was metal minus thesomething-or-other and had they had access to that singular tool they would have effectively churned out very similar music, either sans-vocals, or less baby raping and mother eating. *shrugs*

I'd actually like to form my own Christian Death Metal Group.

I hate the label of metal, but I love some of the bands that fall under that label.

My favorite metal band would have to be Sevendust.

I don't really like bands that play fast just for the sake of being fast.

One more thing, can Tool really be considered metal? They just seem like so much more that I wouldn't be able to put them in a genre.

I place Tool under metal but like you said, it's more but I don't know how to classify it really.

I always thought Tool was industrial.

Cannibal Corpse is proabably the most metal-ish band I listen to on a regular basis. XD

That's a bit self-contradictory, don't you think? The only thing that gives the second statement a bit sense is the disclaimer "much".

Not really. I don't listen to much metal, but I think Slayer fucking rules. They are really the only metal band I listen to. Unless you count System of a Down, but that would be kind of silly. So... yeah.

And Dragon Force still sucks. =(

Dragon Force?

Yup. They suck. (http://www.dragonforce.com)

But they are the HOTTEST SHIT ON THE POWER/SPEED METAL SCENE TODAY!

Johnny Ramone could have smoked these motherfuckers.

Plus I think "alternative" just means "not what's trendy." I've never been able to figure out an actual sound that's associated with it.

I am a metal only man, myself. I enjoy pre-midian Cradle of Filth, Opeth, In Flames(newest CD is horrible), Dimmu Borgir(newest CD is horrible), Arch enemy(newest cd is horrible), Iced Earth, pre-black album Metallica, older Hammerfall...that's about it. It is hard as shit to find good bands, and the fact that most of the bands I listen to have dumbed their music down considerably in order to get more sales really, really blows.

Well I play the guitar so basically I listen to everything that has cool guitar riffs but mainly right now its Sum 41 , Metallica, Guns n Roses, System of a Down etc. etc.

Alternative Metal was the name given to metal music that emerged at the start of the nineties, as a result of the hybridization of metal and hip-hop; in terms of pioneers, think Korn or the Deftones. Here, the term alternative was used to define it as a separate entity to (and an alternative) to either glam and cockrock heavy metal (Jovi, Kiss, Poison) or thrash metal (Slayer, Metallica, Anthrax) and death metal (Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse, Death), or grunge (Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains)

As the nineties progressed, it obviously rose to prominance and became more popular; something that occured as a result of this was the standardization and iconic attachment that would emerge as Nu Metal, which is essentially what alternative metal evolved into.

I don't really care about vocals. so i never judge a band by the singer. but i'm into Black Metal, Death Metal, Speed Metal, etc. I play guitar and drums, and on guitar i like melody and speed, and drums speed. I like Cradle Of Filth, Dimmu Borgir, Mayhem, Immortal, Cannibal Corpse, Satanic End, Celtic Frost, Slayer, Metallica,

but my favorite band will always be Led Zeppelin, heres some other genres i dig:
