NOTES

Hamlet (also referred to as Hamlet 2000) is a 2000 American film written and
directed by Michael Almereyda, set in contemporary New York City, and based
on the Shakespeare play of the same name. Ethan Hawke plays Hamlet as a film
student, Kyle MacLachlan co-stars as Uncle Claudius, Gertrude by Diane Venora,
Laertes by Liev Schreiber, Ophelia by Julia Stiles, Rosencrantz by Steve Zahn,
and Hamlet's father by Sam Shepard. In this version of Hamlet, Claudius becomes
King and CEO of "Denmark Corporation", having taken over the firm by killing his
brother, Hamlet's father.
Burwell employs only strings and woodwinds - there is no brass of any kind in
this score. That type of orchestration adds a softer, richer tone to the music,
and it fits well, considering the cold steel corporate metaphor occuring in the film.
He has the ability to write music that seems to take a rather simple path - but in
actuality it's more complex than a Mandlebrot sequence. One of the better "dark"
scores he's done, Hamlet shows that Burwell is still at the top of his game. With
a running time of almost 40 minutes, Hamlet might not be for everyone - but it is
worth picking up if you are a Burwell fan, and are used to his style of music.
(I am a Burwell fan and love his style of music).
