It does cost money to play online every month, as does it with most MMORPGs out there these days. FFXI's fee is $13 a month with $1 a month extra for any additional characters. First month is free.

I have both the PC and the PS2 versions. PC just cost 50 bucks for the game (which I got free cuz it was a christmas pressie) and the Chains of Promathia expansion was 30 bucks. PS2 costed a lot more cuz of the harddrive. 100 bucks for the game and harddrive, 30 bucks for the CoP expansion, and if your PS2 DOESN'T have a network adapter you'll need about 30 bucks for that and you'll need a network cable, and usb keyboard (probably a must otherwise it takes forever to type with the controller).

The PC also cost 30 dollars now instead of 50... but personally, if you don't have time or you try to "force" the game (meaning you play too hard and too quickly that it gets boring fast), I suggest you don't get it. You should play this game moderately and not treat it as a regular game.

i would get it well maybe 50 50 chance i'll get it but i suggest you do so you can tell us all how it was so if it was bad all of us would've saved our money and you would have only lost money. so get it

This game is awesome, lovely. But please NOTE, this game is time consuming and it is for people that will really stick to it and that has the enough time. Everything here takes time, so think about that before buying it.

Also, don't get obsessed with it. I heard of some people veery obsessed with it and it could ruin your real life. Try to not mess it too much with it.

I use a lot of time in this game bacause I own a linkshell group (clan) and I need to be present to know what happens, talk to the members, etc. Also, this game is dangerous lol. My grades went down a little because I was not studying so much as before since I started playing, lol. And I know a guy that lost his job because he wanted to stay in home to play instead. LOL it is so funny...

So yeah, please think before buying it, and don't waste your money ^^

I think you should buy it...if I had money I'd buy it.
But only if I had a lot of money because keeping this kind of game has a cost and when you don't find no more fun on it it will be money threw away.

Fable isn't an online game... it's "Live Aware" but it's not online. All it does is log into your Xbox Live account and tell you who is online and what they're playing. Otherwise, there are no online elements to Fable... at all.

A few points here:

Firstly, 'Does FFXI have an offline mode?' is one of the most common questions asked about FFXI, and unfortunately, it's because people confuse MMORPGs (one of my most hated abbreviations), like FFXI and Everquest with an ORPG, like Phantasy Star Online. So, what is the difference?

An ORPG (or Online Role-Playing Game, is often an RPG which is mainly offline based, but has certain features which can be played online (like the afromentioned PSO). Such games can be played online or offline for no cost, although the quality of the service normally leaves a lot to be desired (and the service for such games tend to only be supported by the developer for a short time before being phased out) . There are a lot of free ORPGs out there, but unfortunately a lot seem to be going down the MMORPG path lately (Ragnarok Online springs to mind).

An MMORPG (or Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game) however, is an RPG that is almost exclusively played online. The drawback with MMORPGs is you have to pay to use the service, although the size of the game and quality of the service means you defintely get what you pay for. Most MMORPGs have a free trial period (as FFXI does, for 30 days), which gives you a good chance to experience it before deciding you want to invest your hard earned moolah into the game. It is for this reason a lot of people refuse to play FFXI purely because they don't want to pay the monthly subscription fee.

If you're willing and able to pay the monthly fee, but all that is keeping you from playing FFXI is not having a credit card, Square Enix accepts several other payment alternaltives for FFXI and Tetra Master, if desired.

Debit Cards and Prepaid Credit cards are also accepted, providing they have either a Visa or Mastercard logo (in other words, a normal bank keycard isn't accepted). I use a Visa Debit Card myself (which is included as part of my savings account), and I simply add $20 a month to the account balance each month to cover the monthly fee. Although it's a normal bank account, the card works like a credit card in most ways and can even accepts EFTPOS and ATM transactions.

Finally, if you're living in Europe or the UK, there is a pre-paid Visa ecard which Square Enix is endorsing that you can pay FFXI's fees using funds deducted via direct debit, but it can only be paid using British pounds, so wouldn't be a viable option for everyone. The same it costs in the US and elsewhere: $12.95 US a month for the basic subscription for FFXI (which includes one character), plus, if you want to play with extra characters in addition to the first one, it's $1 US per character, per month, on top of the basic subscription (up to a maximum of 15).

Tetra Master, the card game from FFIX, is also included as an online only game with the PlayOnline Viewer software (the bundled frontend for FFXI), which can also be played online for an extra fee of $1 US a month.

As an example; say you want the basic FFXI subscription, two extra characters for FFXI, plus Tetra Master. Your fee structure would work something like this:

Basic FFXI content ID/Subscription (includes original character): $12.95 a month
First extra FFXI content ID (extra character): $1.00 a month
Second extra FFXI content ID (extra character): $1.00 a month
Tetra Master content ID/subscription: $1.00 a month
Total fees: $15.95 US a month.

Note, you cannot buy extra Tetra Master subscriptions (content IDs) without buying extra copies of the software. You also don't have to subscribe to TM if you don't want. It's only a bonus game included with FFXI.

Also note, the fees are in US dollars, no matter which country you play from, except Japan, which is no real deal anyway as payment is made by credit or debit card (although exchange rates for your local currency do vary).

I'm not sure, as I live in Australia, however, I do know that at the moment, that as a guide, the Australian dollar is currently worth around 78 US cents (meaning the $12.95 US fee for FFXI would equate to around $17-19 AUS), so checking the exchange rates for your local currency in the newspaper or at a bank would help.

Incidentally, the subscription fees are automatically charged to your credit or debit card on the first day of each month, so it would be best to check the current exchange rate around that time each month. Also, Square Enix informs you of your current fees due when logging into PlayOnline several days before the fee date anyway, so it's easy to see how much money is going to be charged to your account.

It's about �7 a month for the subscription in the UK.
