Like the movie it accompanies, Tan Dun�s score for Ang Lee�s martial artistry is a mixture of Eastern traditions and Western influences that doesn�t sell out either genre. Interpreted by cello virtouso Yo-Yo Ma and encompassing all sorts of Chinese instrumentation (bamboo flutes, the stringed Erhu), Tan Dan has eschewed obvious chopsocky stylings and turned in something much more rewarding.Kicking off with a Main Theme that is both melancholic and graceful- if you hear this soundtrack before you see the movie, it is difficult to believe that Crouching Tiger is a film graced with the most fantastic action - the music is romantic in the broadest sense of the word. The Eternal Vow starts with intimate, reflective strings, then builds into heroic, epic mode that simply breaks the heart. Elsewhere, the cello-dominated Silk Road is slow, fragile and beautiful, To The South is a light confection of drum and woodwind, whereas Through The Bamboo Forest is edgy, yet augmented with ethereal string effects.More Hollywood-style action licks come in A Wedding Interrupted, The Encounter and In The Old Temple, all built on urgent orchestral flurries.
