Samuel Barber - Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, David Zinman ‎– Adagio • Symphony No. 1 • The School For Scandal • Essays (1992 Argo)

I've often called this my single fave CD album. Most of the music in this collection was written in the 1930s. Barber's compositions sound very cinematic. Possibly many film composers were influenced by "new-romantic-modern" originals like Barber and Walton.

Thanks for the share, I have been wanting to have a superior collection of Barber's work. I only have a cheap CD with ropey performances!

Thanks.
My first time hearing Samuel Barber was in the film 'Platoon', in which 'Adagio for Strings' is featured rather prominently and effectively. While hearing this music I was thinking at the time "wow, this is a fantastic score!", but find out later it's a piece composed many years before the film, let alone world war 2!

Edit: The first track 'Adagio for Strings' has to be the quietest or at least the quietest in recent memory track from a commercial CD I've heard. My receiver is at 0dB, which comes close to the maximum volume limit and it's a comfortable loudness for me. I'll give an example of how extremely low in volume the 'Adagio' track is- if I played The National's Trouble Will Find Me at 0dB on my receiver it would probably damage my hearing and perhaps my speakers as well.
