So I was recently thinking about mine, and thought it'd be interesting to know yours...

Without further ado, I present:

The Top 10 Animated Film Scores
You Couldn't Live Without

I'll start this all off with mine:

1. Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron - Hans Zimmer, 2002
2. Wall-E - Thomas Newman, 2008
3. Toy Story 3 - Randy Newman, 2010
4. Ice Age - David Newman, 2002
5. Ice Age 3 - John Powell, 2009
6. Cars - Randy Newman, 2006
7. Alvin And The Chipmunks - Christopher Lennertz, 2007
8. Monsters, Inc. - Randy Newman, 2001
9. Ratatouille - Michael Giacchino, 2007
10. How To Train Your Dragon - John Powell, 2010

It was a pretty hard job choosing, as I have so many, and to be honest these aren't in much of a particular order.

And there were some very close runners up:

Bolt - John Powell, 2008
Ice Age 2 - John Powell, 2006
Rio - John Powell, 2011
Madagascar - Hans Zimmer, 2005
Cars 2 - Michael Giacchino, 2011
Chicken Run - John Powell, 2000
Stuart Little - Alan Silvestri, 1999
Finding Nemo - Thomas Newman, 2003
Despicable Me - Heitor Pereira, 2010
Megamind - Hans Zimmer, 2010
Over The Hedge - Rupert Gregson-Williams, 2006
Planes - Mark Mancina, 2013

Please post your Top 10 below - I'd love to see your choices!

You don't even have to have as many as ten choices - it could just be your top two or three.
(If you have hundreds, like me, please just list the top 10, and then some runners up.)

Start posting, and have fun! :)

At the end of one month, I will assess all the posts on the thread and reveal the Top 10 most popular animated film scores and also the most popular composer.

Some great movie as been forgotten by the west, but here my list

01-The Twelve Tasks of Asterix (Grard Calvi)
02-Princess Mononoke (Joe Hisaishi)
03-The Lion King (Hans Zimmer)
04-The Cat Returns (Yuuji Nomi)
05-Un Monstre A Paris (Patrice Renson & M)

07-How to train your Dragon (John Powell)
08-Haibane Renmei
09-Wolf Children ()
10-Howl's Moving Castle (Joe Hisaishi()

Why nobody include one of great Asterix movie in the list yet. "The Place That Sends You Mad" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0RBCtaFGcMA) is the perfect replica of your present bureaucracy.
Let's not forget the "Arsenic cake" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55k3v5NWgLc) song. What a great way to make a cake, deadly !

The movie from the "Studio Ghibli" are incredible work, sad that Disney have the right and send the film out of the way just for then to make profit with the own movies.

Are a list, great pleasure I have to view these movies except those of Takahana.
Nausicaa Of The Valley Of Wind
Castle in the Sky
My Neighbor Totoro
Kiki Delivery's Service
Porco Rosso
Whisper of the Heart
Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away
The Cats Return
Howl's Moving Castle
Tales of the EarthSea
Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea
Arrietty the Borrower
From Up on Poppy
The Wind Rises (Ultimate movie of Hayao Miyazaki)
The Tale of Princess Kaguya
Ocean Waves
Only Yesterday
Grave of the Fireflies (don't view this movie with children, period after-war japan -> sad movie)
Pom Poko
My Neighbors the Yamadas

Some interesting japanese work, some old and new :
Garden of Words
Wolf Children
Haibane Renmei
Swan Lake (1981) -> also know in Japan : Sekai meisaku dwa: Hakuch no mizmi

"Un Monstre Paris" is a incredible french animated, great sound, I open the thread myself on that soundtrack (Thread 142177).

Enjoy !

The exact order of these can change a little bit based on my mood, etc, but these are definitely my top 11 animated scores:

How to Train Your Dragon
How to Train Your Dragon 2
Kung Fu Panda 2
The Incredibles
Mulan
WALL-E
The Land Before Time
The Lion King
Kung Fu Panda
Monsters University
Monsters, Inc.

I also really wish there was an OST for Disney's Robin Hood.

I'd never heard of The Dark Crystal before, but I've just watched the trailer, and now the first 10 minutes of the film on YouTube - it looks awesome! I love films like that! I'll have to finish watching it at some point soon! And the score did sound great, so I've made that your tenth choice on my list. It certainly qualifies as an animation! Thanks for bringing it to my attention!

I grew up with Disney, Croatian (The Elm-Chanted Forest, The Magician's Hat, Professor Balthazar), Czech (Krtek, A je to!) and Polish (Reksio) animated films. But the most memorable music, which I listen to on a regular basis, is the one I listed.

mallet
06-26-2014, 04:36 PM
Being from Poland, I was also considering Polish and Czech animations, but these are mostly unknown (I think) outside Eastern Europe. Music is sadly unreleased and I think it will never be released. Polish composers are great (even music for kids was beautiful), you mentioned Reksio, but also Bolek i Lolek, Miś Kolargol, Baltazar Gąbka, Miś Uszatek (very popular in ... Japan!) and many more had wonderful music.

Also Czech animations had lovely music Krtek and A je to! were I supposed most popular, but also Rumcajs, Křemlek and Vochomůrka, Vodnk Česlko, O makov panence a motlu Emanuelovi.
And don't forget Russian animation, but here music was not so prominent, as far as I can remember.

Somehow I still prefer our Eastern music to Disney. Well, but that's just me. Ech, memories...

1. The Lion King (1994, Hans Zimmer) (my favorite score EVER, not just my favorite animation score)
2. Coraline (2009, Bruno Coulais)
3. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993, Danny Elfman)
4. Cinderella (1950, Oliver Wallace)
5. Despicable Me 2 (2013, Heitor Pereira)
6. Lilo & Stitch (2002, Alan Silvestri)
7. Beauty and the Beast (1991, Alan Menken)
8. The Simpsons Movie (2007, Hans Zimmer)
9. Kung Fu Panda (2008, Hans Zimmer & John Powell)
10. Beetlejuice (1988, Danny Elfman) (I know it's not an animation film hence why I put it last. Although it is a live-action movie the score has a very "cartoony" style so it just felt right to include it here.)

With the exception of the first 3, I have no specific order for these.

I still feel ashamed - I haven't yet seen The Lion King. I'm hoping to next week, though. :)

Thanks for the first comment!

Don't feel ashamed for never seen some popular movie.

For example, i know people that have never seen Star Wars! My dad is one of them, "don't wanna see crazy movies with starships" he says :D

If we counted the number of listens ever, Alan Menken would fill most of my list, but these are the ten I've played more often lately, in alphabetical order:

Aladdin ─ Alan Menken
Anastasia ─ David Newman
Atlantis ─ James Newton Howard
Beowulf ─ Alan Silvestri
Epic ─ Danny Elfman
How To Train Your Dragon (1&2) ─ John Powell
Planes ─ Mark Mancina
The Adventures Of Tintin: The Secret Of The Unicorn ─ John Williams
The Hunchback Of Notre Dame ─ Alan Menken
The Legend Of The Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole ─ David Hirschfelder

Nice thread, James and all. I've enjoyed many of those favorite scores, but there are a bunch of them that I've never listened to, and this comes handy to do a list.

Monsters Inc. is fantastic though...Monsters University as well. ;)

Maybe it's the setting or the Elton John songs...I don't know. Lion King never really clicked with me. I do have the blu-ray, but I rarely watch it (I have all Disney movies released on Blu-ray).

Yes, I have to say, I really have no experience of the old Disney classics, so I was surprised at the results (although The Lion King was predictable). I'm glad HTTYD came in 2nd. I'll have to give Lion King a listen at some point. :) And yes, WALL-E deserves a higher spot, but 6th isn't bad. I was annoyed it didn't come in at least 5th so that I could do a logo for it. :)

I just found this thread...but I have to add one that is high on my list.

Lord of the Rings by Leonard Rosenman (I'm surprised no one else mentioned this...I listen to it often)

The rest of my 10 were covered by others...but if the Dark Crystal counts, then I have to add the Harryhausen classics (both by Bernard Herrmann):
7th Voyage of Sinbad
and Jason and the Argonauts

Well deserved! He is probably the best Disney composer of them all. Sure, there are a couple of composers who did only 1 or 2 score's for Disney and they were amazing (Goldsmith's Mulan), but he made MANY!! He is synonymous with Disney in my opinion!

8m19 An Arguement / You're Mufasa's Boy / Remember. A little over 2 min into the cue there's a duduk that plays the main theme of the film. It's when Rafiki is singing and throwing the rocks at Simba. That segment right there is my absolute favorite piece of film music. Ever.

But NOT the version off The Legacy Collection. Some moron at Disney or RCP decided to remove the duduk, therefore it's not the film mix. I was heartbroken upon discovering this and it's why I never bought it.

Just listened to those two cues recommended by Mr Gold. Very nice. I can see why it's a favourite. But I think I'll definitely appreciate it more when I've seen the film. Am I right in guessing the 11 minute mark in "The Rightful King" is the end of the film where the screen cuts to black before the beginning of the credits?

Then the sing busa is played for the credits until the elton john song.

There's The Lion King again. Why is it at the top of everyones' lists?? I've heard a little... but it hasn't grabbed me hugely. Could somebody point me to a particular cue that is so stunning as to justify this score's place as number one on this poll and everyones' personal lists?!

^In my opinion, the best piece of music Zimmer's ever written.

Personally, I'd avoid the Legacy Collection and stick with the leaked complete score - there were some really weird mixing decisions with the official release that replaced some of the ethnic instruments and choral bits with weird-sounding samples.

Wow, what an interesting mix of scores! Thanks so much for taking the time to tell us. :)

And that Lion King cue is 3m7, right? I'll have a listen.

Exactly. Have a look at what I was talking about last night:

8m19 An Arguement / You're Mufasa's Boy / Remember. A little over 2 min into the cue there's a duduk that plays the main theme of the film. It's when Rafiki is singing and throwing the rocks at Simba. That segment right there is my absolute favorite piece of film music. Ever.

But NOT the version off The Legacy Collection. Some moron at Disney or RCP decided to remove the duduk, therefore it's not the film mix. I was heartbroken upon discovering this and it's why I never bought it.

And that Lion King cue is 3m7, right? I'll have a listen.

Yes, that's 3m07 Father's Footsteps.

Here's 8m19 An Arguement / You're Mufasa's Boy / Remember. My favorite piece plays from to 2:32 to 2:47.

8m19 An Arguement / You're Mufasa's Boy / Remember. A little over 2 min into the cue there's a duduk that plays the main theme of the film.

Or, to be precise, one of the main themes. That motif for Simba sort of shares the spot for "main" material with Mufasa's theme, which serves as a prominent idea representing both his father and the position he must fill for his subjects. It makes the ending cue all the more satisfying when we open with one final rendition of Mufasa's theme and then it segues(with a reference to Zimmer and Mancina's previous work, Millennium) into the triumphant variant of Simba's, signifying him finally taking his rightful place.

I always liked the thematic complexity within TLK's score. The film has the standard run time for most of the traditionally animated Disney features, and yet it still manages to pack in around a dozen reoccurring motifs for a number of characters and situations. Some are utilized more than others, but are still leitmotifs all the same.

I'm shamefully behind on many animated films, but a few come to mind: Mark Macina's "Brother Bear", Gregson-Williams' "Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas", James Newton Howard's "Atlantis: The Lost Empire". First "Shrek", too. Newman's "Ice Age". And of course two of my absolute, all-time favorites I really couldn't live without: "Batman: The Animated Series" and "Batman: Mask of the Phantasm".

Man, how did I forget those two? Both are excellent. Bruce Broughton's The Rescuers Down Under and David Newman's Anastasia should probably be on my list somewhere too.

4. The Prince of Egypt
5. Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron
6. How to Train Your Dragon (series)
7. Rurouni Kenshin: Trust and Betrayal and Rurouni Kenshin: Reflections*
8. Atlantis
9. Pocahontas
10. Dragon Ball Z: The Tree of Might (Kikuchi's score)

*These two features were originally multi-part OVAs, but both received Director's Cuts, so they should probably count as full-length features. I really dislike both of them from a viewing standpoint, but the scores were phenomenal.

This was kind of a tough list to make, as my favourites usually fluctuate (apart from TLK always being number one), and there are A LOOOOOOT of amazing animation scores to fall in love with and then re-fall in love with. Then there are the scores where one might fancy a particularly striking musical idea, but doesn't really have an entire body of work to gush over (Aladdin comes to mind, where "One Jump Ahead" becomes a really endearing leitmotif for the titular character, but there isn't an official complete score release to get all the juiciness out of it).

Goodness that's hard. For general listening I'd go with older classic Disney soundtracks to be honest, often more for the vocal tracks rather than for the isolated scores . Not especially keen on some of the modern ones though. In the order that they popped into my mind:

Beauty and the Beast
Peter Pan
The Little Mermaid
Frozen (I know "Let It Go" has been battered to death, but I do like the music anyway)
The Lion King
Mary Poppins (well it has animated sections, does that count?)
The Jungle Book
The Many Adventures Winnie the Pooh (indeed anything by the Sherman Brothers is good in my book)
Polar Express (how did that sneak into my otherwise Disney list?)
Any of the classic princess fairy tales (in order, probably Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White)
Hunchback of Notre Dame (awesome score and songs, but perhaps not one I listen to often enough)

[Edited to say Mulan needs to be in there too, and that I can't count and this is nearer to a Top 15]

The Incredibles
Toy Story
The Lion King
The Jungle Book (George Bruns & The Sherman Brothers version)
The Sword in the Stone
The Dark Knight Returns
Les Chevaliers du Zodiaque (Saint Seiya for the Jap Anime peeps here)
All-Star Superman - Christopher Drake (good luck finding this one - if anyone has this I'd love to know

HONORABLE MENTION
Ev'rybody Wants to Be a Cat - Scatman Crothers
The Pink Panther Theme - Henry Mancini
Space Jam - James Newton Howard
Superman the Animated Series Main Theme - Shirley Walker

Not in any particular order (that's impossible) but this are my top 10:

01. Spirit Stallion of the Cimmaron (For me this is just perfect)
02. How To Train Your Dragon (Both but specially the first one. John Powell is the master of animation scores)
03. The Lion King (Another amazing score by Zimmer)
04. Beauty and the Beast (The best Menken score of all time)
05. The Incredibles (Giacchino is a genius)
06. Atlantis (James Newton Howard needs to get back to this style)
07. Dinosaur (Or to this, both amazing)
08. Princess Mononoke (Joe Hishaishi did his best in this amazing work)
09. Rise of the Guardians (Desplat at his best)
10. Zootopia (another Giacchino scores with great themes and a lot of fun)

And this were very near:
Spirited Away (The piano themes are so beautiful)
Up (The main theme captures the feeling of the movie)
Wreck-It Ralph (I love all those synthetizers)
Treasure Planet (The main theme is just perfect)
Monster Inc. (All the jazzy parts and so are amazing)

With no doubt the top five of composers is Zimmer, John Powell, James Newton Howard. Michael Giacchino and Joe Hishaishi/Alexandre Desplat/Alan Menken
