Hiroyuki Sawano's transformation into the Japanese Brian Tyler has never been more evident than here. Sawano relies on electric guitars more than Brian Tyler ever will, but aside from that, the reliance on big, powerful horns (and pounding bursts of percussion that fall just short of "clattering") as the forefront of a action music-heavy soundtrack really drives the similarities home. Both Sawano and Tyler deploy strings the same way, avoiding reliance on "chugging" that has become widespread in Remote Control Productions scores as of late, instead using strings to provide a layer of melody or suspense to back the horns and electric guitars. Occasionally a saxophone or flute pops up in this score, but that is a rarity. Only a couple of quieter numbers break up the suspense/action music thrills, and Sawano's piano has been reduced to a backing instrument much of the time, but those numbers do add a bit of emotional resonance. However, the few breaks we get are nowhere near enough.

In short, this is a buffet for action music lovers. Sawano throws all caution to the wind here and there are some crazy-intense tracks. Some themes from OST 1 are reprised here. Most are faster, a couple are more menacing. They're not quite as memorable this time around.

But this is a good score. Anyone who doesn't like Hiroyuki Sawano or Brian Tyler won't have their minds changed here. But for those who love Sawano and/or Tyler . . . this is a auditory feast for the ears. Unfortunate that there isn't enough here in terms of emotion to change the minds of those critical of Sawano and Tyler.

to be fair, most of the unreleased music from KlK are piano pieces

We'll probably get those later, bundled on the final video release.

I'm most happy we got the "Rebellion theme" as I like to call it (the first half of track six) -- absolutely killer cue, probably my favorite piece of score from anything so far this year. Shame it isn't longer.

Never seen this anime yet, so I don't know what the music is like. Intend to change that at some point, but I do know it's a well received anime.
Nonetheless, thank you for the opportunity to broaden my horizons.
