Super. I recommend these albums highly to see just what a talent he started out on the keyboard (and many variations of a keyboard). A West-Coast jazz prodigy whose talents the great Henry Mancini recognized and brought onto his regular, select crew of superb jazz musicians...even though he was merely in his early twenties (thus, his name Johnny back then). This playing here is the same piano talent that we hear on the famous Mancini issue Peter Gunn, along with several other of Henry's recordings from the late fifties to the early sixties.

As was so often the case, the greatest of our beloved composers all had a common origin: Jazz.

Thank you for these gems, derik556, particularly for the milestone The John Towner Touch. This may be his first personal record, right? And his work in the Marty Paich Quartet was new to me. Wonderful post.

If there's any interest, I can upload any of these related vinyl rips I found:

Double LP compilation Modern Jazz Gallery (1957, mono), whose four John Towner Quartet tracks sourced Jazz Beginnings. Includes four tracks of Marty Paich Orchestra.

World On A String (1957, mono; reissued in 1986 as Here's What I'm Here For). Like the previous and The John Towner Touch, all the tracks featuring Williams were remastered into Jazz Beginnings.

One year after the compilation Andr Previn In Hollywood, (Previn's piano, Williams conducting), they repeated the same roles with jazz: Sound Stage (1964, stereo).

Two more reissues on stereo CDs of the 1950's LPs that sourced "Jazz Beginnings":

The John Williams Band Plays The Music Of Harold Arlen - "Here's What I'm Here For" (1986, from original LP "World On A String", 1957)

MP3 256 kbps CBR, all tracks. No additional music but with pictures of CD and LP covers.

Remembering With Marjorie Lee (2000, from LP of 1957)

Marjorie Lee & John T. Williams Quintet. MP3 192 kbps VBR. Besides the two instrumental, more lively tracks reissued, the quintet accompanied the singer in 10 jazz ballads.
