So, Friday is the big launch day in Europe. My copy is alreaddy on order and should be here with the mailman on friday!! Very excited I am!

Anyhow, can anyone offer any tips for starting out in the game? just any general advice, I dont understand all the stuff about different servers e.t.c, if I am on one server can I not meet a player on another server?

Thanks In Advance

Basically, yeah, you can't meet players that aren't on your server.

As for the rest, it's hardly explainable in a single post, as there is much to learn in this game.

Hmm

Get a Cerberus World Pass
Go to Windurst
Level up a lot
Meet new people
Fight a lot of monsters
Meet more people
Level up even more
Go on missions
Get an advance job

And more later!

Unfortunately, it isn't that simple as just 'getting on Cerberus' unless you know what to do.

In a vain attempt to limit server traffic, Square Enix automatically assigns you a server randomly according to how crowded the servers are at the time you register. Accordingly, you therefore have a greater chance of being assigned to a less-crowded server than a crowded one.

There are however, two ways to get on the server you want. One, the official way created by Square Enix, is the World Pass. This is an item an existing player purchases in the game, which then allows a number of players on other servers to create a an extra, new, character in their server (the World Pass takes the form of a password that the player has to input when creating a new content ID). However, you cannot place your main character on a different server with this method, and plus the World Pass is somewhat pricey, so it takes a while for people to get enough gil to buy one.

The second method, is actually much simpler than you'd think. As the server assignment is random, it's therefore a simple matter of just deleting and recreating your original character at the beginning repeatedly until you get the server you want. This is how you do it:

First, create your character as normal. After confirming your new character at the Character Creation screen, make sure you press escape right when it asks to link your new character to your handle. It's right after you choose your starting city. Then, highlight Delete Character and select the character you created. Under the 'World' heading is the name of the server you were assigned to. If you're satisfied with the default assignment, then simply escape out of that menu, select the character, and enjoy. If it's not the server you'd like however, delete the character and then create it again.

Thankfully the race/appearance/job/starting location/name you previously chose are all saved, and you can even use the same name as the character you just deleted, so it's really simple. Then, escape at the handle linking to check again. Repeat the process until you're satisifed with the server assignment.

Also, make sure you escape out of the character selection screen right when it asks you to link the character to your handle, otherwise you will have to sit and endure your starting city's background story every time you delete/recreate a character (and that takes a while, not to mention becomes very tedious the twentifth-odd time you've seen it).

Whichever method you employ is up to you, although I'd recommend the second one myself, as I really can't be bothered with the whole World Pass deal - at least at the moment. Later I may use it for another character though (maybe even to have a character on Cerberus, as I'm aiming for Midgardsormr for my main character myself)..

Finally, there has been at least one instance in the past (in the Japanese version) where Square Enix has offered a server-migration, but that was in the early days of the game and apparently was due to technical problems, and will not be used again. So those two methods are your only option for choosing your own server I'm afraid.

Actually, getting a World Pass is not as pricey as you'd think, I got a few of them for about 2k , that's all.

I am hoping I find some people who can give me a little guidance straight off

Ah...since you've been typing it wrong since the beginning...

That's CERBERUS, NOT Cerebus :p

Cerberus referring to the guardian of Hades' domain in ancient greek mythology, and also a GF in FFVIII.

I am on Cerberus as Majinsephy, I am already having a technical difficulty damnit!!

When I load up the game everything is fine except the player models, I can only see some of the features such as eyes hair and hands the rest is invisible.

This is making the game incredibly difficult to play!! I am scanning my files right now but I really not sure how to fix this

I finally got my first chance to see my copy of Final Fantasy XI running this morning, after downloading the patch last night.

I'm on Shiva at the moment, but that's because I got chucked there and I didn't know the 'switch server' trick.

Could somebody please give me a Cerberus world pass? I'll probably have one character (Sirion, Hume Male) on Cerberus and one on Sylph (Elbalan, Elvaan Male). That is, if Merl and Mandi are still playing on Sylph.

Also, quick question - my ultimate goal for Sirion is for him to be a Samurai - what's the best job for me to start levelling seriously on? Warrior?

Also, I want Elbalan as a ranger - what's the best class to start him on?

Thanks :D

For the Samura, start with Warrior, then Monk/Warrior until level 15, back to Warrior/Monk until 30 and then Samura/Warrior.

For the Ranger, start with Thief, then Warrior/Thief, then Thief/Warrior and then Ninja/Warrior , and finally, Ranger/Ninja. This will take a lot of time and will be very expensive, but Ranger/Ninja owns. Truly.

I should add that you can start on your subjob once you hit Level 18 on your main job.

Maybe I should give a few pointers :o

Okay, throughout your adventure of leveling up, there are a few off things you'll need to do.

Lets use your Samurai path.

WAR: Level 1 -> 10
Complete Rank 1 Missions at 10ish
WAR: Level 10 -> 18 (Most go towards 20)
During this time, grab the Teleport Crystals from the Crags and the Subjob Items. Get Subjob.
MNK/WAR: Level 1 -> 15(Most go towards 20)
WAR/MNK: 18 -> 20
Make the Trip to Jeuno on foot, finish Chocobo Quest
WAR/MNK: 20 -> 25
Finish Rank 2 Missions and get Kazham Keys
WAR/MNK 25 -> 30
Get Adv Job Samurai
SAM/WAR 1 -> ???

THEN... well now it's open waters for you.
