Director Robert Zemekis stunned quite a few when he announced that his film Cast Away would not use a film score and would rely on sound effects instead. This turns out to be true for the first 90 minutes of the film, but then Silvestri's subtle and bittersweet music enters just when the main character is finally able to escape the island.

The score was never commercially released. What I have is a fan-made creation masquerading as an FYC with the original 6 tracks lifted off the real 6-track For Your Consideration Academy Promo plus a 7th track ("End Credits") lifted from another Silvestri compilation. The first 6 tracks are lossless, while the 7th is not. This is not the real FYC Promo.

An expanded version of Cast Away can also be found on the Memphis Music label (bootleg) with Silvestri's unreleased music to Serendipity. Message #9 (below) offers a track comparison of the 7-track Cast Away and this expanded version.

Serendipity was a romantic comedy from 2001 about how fate re-unites 2 people after a chance encounter. A commercial soundtrack was released on Columbia, but included 12 vocals and just 1 score track. This disc includes 17 tracks, and Silvestri's music is upbeat and eclectic: a tango, a bossa nova, a little folk guitar. All tracks on this disc are lossless.

CAST AWAY (FAKE FYC)= 7 titled tracks totaling about 24 minutes.
Tau and EAC indicated 6 tracks on this disc to be lossless, with the exception of "End Credits"

CAST AWAY (15 tracks) & SERENDIPITY (17 tracks) = 32 tracks totaling about 80 minutes
Tau and EAC indicated all tracks on this disc to be lossless.

LINKS are in spoiler.

Thank you very much for the files and the info, yepsa. I've replaced my MP3 version of the double bootleg with your lossless set, from which it derived, and that always feels great. And for anyone interested, I uploaded here the artwork I had (http://imgur.com/a/k9C0J) for this.

A remark about the first tracks of the first set: they are the same cues as in the promo but the sound was edited (at least it's different from the promo version I got, which has the same audio streams as the first 6 flacs shared by DaUpp in this thread (Thread 118252)). This sounds more shiny and open and less bass, and there are also visual differences in the waveform and spectrograms (clearly the lowest frequencies filtered-out). It is nice to have both, this and the promo, so, thanks also for this one.

// Edit: Just have read in the flacs of the first set the comment "Bootleg pretending to be FYC Promo." and I can't rep you again, but have a big +1. :)

Now, a doubt: as yepsa said, all the tracks of the first set are in the double bootleg, and this is the correspondence:

Double Cast Away + Serendipity First set (same titles as 6-tracks Promo)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
02 - Cast Away Theme 05 - What The Tide Could Bring
04 - The Raft At Sea 06 - Crossroads
*06 - Wilson Is Gone / Memphis Memories 01 - Cast Away
08 - Sleepless Night / Cab Drive To Kelly *02 - Wilson, I'm Sorry
09 - Chuck And Kelly's Farewell 03 - Drive To Kelly's
11 - Chuck's Lament 04 - Love Of My Life
It's not a problem that the titles differ but I'm curious about the third and fourth lines. I don't remember well the movie, but apparently there was no score while the hero was in the island, so anything involving Wilson the volleyball shouldn't have music, right? Neither a talk with him nor anything there after it's lost. Then I'd trust more the other set (for example, "Sleepless Night / Cab Drive To Kelly" is back on the civilization and hence it could have music) but the good Wilson is in both sets, and that makes it more difficult to understand. Maybe I'll try to watch the movie again one of these days, but for now, any comment about this?

For those wanting to know how the tracks on the 7-track version correspond to the 15-track version, Kooke has gratefully supplied that info above. Thank you, Kooke!

About Kooke's last paragraph: In the film, Wilson the volleyball is taken off the island, but falls overboard and is lost. Silvestri's music at that time has already begun, so a track title mentioning Wilson would be possible. As Kooke said, I'd have to watch the film again to be sure.

You are welcome, yepsa. I've replied your PM too, and I'll clarify or edit also whatever is needed in my previous message, but the idea is that the first 6 tracks of this fake-FYC are not unaltered copies of the promo but they were edited/equalized/remastered (and I liked them!). Then the list below that was just about the correlation of cues and titles, and since both, this fake-FYC and the promo have the same titles on those 6 tracks, I mentioned both in the heading of the right column.

And I didn't know this when I posted the previous message, but the pairs of common tracks from the double-bootleg and the fake-FYC have exactly the same audio streams, except for the last 1/1000 of a second (in the ending silences) where you can find differences in some 8 samples. For practical effects they are identical.

About his last paragraph: In the film, Wilson the volleyball is taken off the island, but falls overboard and is lost.
Great, that solves my problem. I thought that Wilson had been lost during a storm in the island but yes, I remember now that he also left the island in the boat, and then the music and those titles were possible. Thanks for the clarification.

I own a physical copy of the "Cast Way - The Films of Robert Zemeckis, The Music of Alan Silvestri" album mentioned above that the end credits (7:30) is taken from, as well as highlights of his other fantastic scores. Does anyone have an interest in this, or does it fall into the "compilation/we already have it covered" pile?

Thanks for the offer, bradg84. To me that album is not just a compilation but, as you said, the original source of the "End Credits". The version of it kindly shared by yepsa is different in duration because of the trimming of silence, but also in the sound, as the editor filtered out some hiss and rumble (like he did in the other six tracks of the score). Even if this edited version is a nicer listen, your disk has the official source from which it derives, and for some of us nitpicky users, enough reason to want it.

Our fellow shriner Yannis, who is enjoying a sabbatical lustrum, shared the album some months ago but the links don't work now. If you upload it I'll grab it again, to verify what I have.

Test passed: track downloaded perfectly. It happens to be the same length as the one I already had, but the music begins at a slightly different times and the streams are not identical. They might belong to different releases (USA-Varse Sarabande / Europe-Colosseum), as the spectrograms do look the same, and by hearing I was unable to tell any difference (though that means close to nothing in mi case :o ).

Thanks a lot.
