Ranma 1/2 is my all-time favorite anime, and I'm absolutely in love with the music. Some of the soundtracks are a lot easier to get a hold of than others, but I've made it my mission to purchase physical copies of as many of them as I can. I've been collecting them on-and-off since 1998, and although my collection isn't complete, it is ever-expanding.

I managed to land a fairly rare Ranma 1/2 soundtrack last week, and that's on the way in the mail. I'll be sharing it (with great excitement) as soon as it arrives, but in the meantime I'm going to share the rest of my collection. This might take me a while as I intend to share in FLAC, and some of the CDs are getting on in age. It took me some effort to rip some of these without the tell-tale signs of old age and frequent use -- I've owned a lot of them for almost 15 years, they've been in a lot of car stereos and have traveled from one side of the country to the other -- but I've more-or-less managed it. As I replace the discs that are troublesome, I'll replace the FLAC rips as well.

So the first album of the day is an oldie but a goldie. I've included high-res scans of the art as well (the age of these discs really shows when you see high-res scans of the inserts):

Anyone who is familiar with this album will notice that the tracks have been split. I'll be doing this with all of the albums that compile unique cues into "suites", because I prefer to be able to jump directly to the cue I'm looking for. I did all the work of splitting them up in WAV format and then created FLAC files, so they ought to retain their lossless qualities. Track order is identical to what's on the original CD, I've just split them up.

Enjoy! More incoming as I have time to rip, split, and upload.

Finally got the link up for the first album. I've never used MEGA before, so if there are any issues let me know and I'll look into an alternate host (suggestions are welcome. It's been a while since I've shared big albums like this.)

Don't worry, Mega is a wise choice: no crappy country and file size limitations and no infamous captchas.

Splitting each cue as file is also a good idea because a lot of Japanese soundtracks unfortunately include several cues in one track (sometimes encoded in "index" navigation function but not supported by most CD players and digital media players).

Thanks a lot, all lossless uploads are welcome.

Just one question: In your scans, I didn't see a "true" back cover with track-list. Do you have it or this alum have not?

Yeah, pretty much all of the Ranma 1/2 releases were done this way, and I was never a big fan of that because it makes finding the cue I'm in the mood for difficult. I think the only discs that I own which don't do it are the Opening and Closing theme collections. At least one of the albums is going to end up having generic naming on the tracks because although each track is made up of multiple cues, they haven't given each cue a name. I may have to get creative when naming them, or I might just tack a roman numeral onto each part of the track. I'll decide when I start working on that particular album.

Just one question: In your scans, I didn't see a "true" back cover with track-list. Do you have it or this alum have not?

I do have the original back cover art, but I didn't scan it because the scanner started giving me trouble when I was doing the interior of the cover art (it kept telling me that the scan failed due to an issue with the scanner. This was the first time I'd ever used it, so I'm still learning the software.)

When I'm ready to put up Volume 2 of the Original Television Soundtrack -- the cues for which I'm going to start splitting up and listening through for imperfections this afternoon -- I'll update the original post with a separate link to the scan of the first volume's back cover.

So what I'm sharing now is perhaps the single most damaged CD in my Ranma 1/2 collection: the OAV Series Box Set Bonus CD.

As far as I can tell, the only place this single was available was with the OAV Box Set released on VHS by Viz back in 1998. It contains three TV-size theme tunes from the OAVs, performed in English. This is the only time in the history of the franchise that I know of where the opening themes were re-recorded with English vocals.

Great care has gone into the digital archiving of this disc. Because it did not come with any kind of protective case and because I was only 17 years old at the time of acquisition, this CD has been put through the ringer. There was some damage to the top side of the CD which allows you to see through the disc, and as I understand it this is a really bad thing because the data is on the backside of that layer.

Fortunately, the rip came out mostly okay. I used EAC to rip the album twice -- once in secure mode and once in burst mode -- and then mixed and matched the least damaged of the tracks. After that, I used GoldWave to apply Pop/Click filtering (passive or aggressive depending on the strength of the distortion), but I only did this to the spots in the track where a pop or click has turned up. In one case I had to use the sledgehammer approach of trimming the pop out with the cut tool (I dare you to try and identify which track I did it to, and at what time marker!) The results are not perfect, but the tracks remain listenable.

Due to the rarity of the disc, I'm unsure if I'll ever be able to secure another copy of it. This may be the best I ever get, although I intend to keep an eye out for a replacement.

There was no art for this CD whatsoever, so I created a quick-and-dirty custom cover and included a scan of the disc (which shows off a lot of grunge on the CD that I've never noticed when looking at it with the naked eye. Yeesh!) Also, I've scanned the track list art for the Volume 1 OST and have included it in this archive.

The rare disc I mentioned earlier in the thread showed up in the mail today, so I'm delaying the work on Original Television Soundtrack Volume 2 in favor of working on this disc. I'm going to have to get creative in splitting up the tracks due to lack of individual cue names, and the insert is actually a full booklet, so it'll take me a little longer to scan the whole thing off. Saying that, I'll be posting it ASAP.

thanks

So here it is, the rare disc I was talking about: Ranma 1/2 - Ultra Anything-Goes Decisive Battle! Movie vs OAV Music Collection.

This CD was released in Japan in 1994 and never made its way state-side. There is a Chinese bootleg, but this is not that. This is the genuine article. I've been looking for a reasonably priced copy since 1998, and a couple of weeks ago I found one on eBay going for about five bucks more than what it would have cost when it was originally released, so I jumped at the chance to have it.

This is widely believed to be one of the most rare Ranma 1/2 soundtracks -- right up there with the Music Ironman Collection (Ongaku No Tetsujin-Hen) -- so I've been really excited to get it into my collection, and I'm equally excited to share it here in FLAC (I've never found a FLAC encode online, although I see that someone offered to PM me a copy back in 2010, I just wasn't aware of the offer until a couple of days ago).

The CD is in pretty spectacular condition given its age, and I've had to do very little to it to make it presentable (had to re-rip one track that came out with a pretty nasty digital glitch on the first attempt). There are a couple of tracks that appear to have errors encoded into the disc -- every version of the tracks that I've ever heard have had these errors, whether it be lossy versions I've found online or in YouTube videos created from different sources -- and I've fixed those where able.

Most of the work I've done involves splitting the tracks into cues and relabeling them. I had to relabel them because, unlike the TV and Movie soundtracks, there are no separate cue titles. I've spent the last two nights watching the OAVs, finding scenes in which each cue is predominantly featured, and taking a line of dialog or an aspect of that scene for the track name. All of the Kenji Kawai tracks are named from the album, as they were originally written for the third film and do not feature multiple cues per track.

So here it is, the album I've spent half my life chasing down. I hope you enjoy it!

As much as I like this album, I wish they'd have released a second volume. This disc features a couple of tracks that I can't seem to find in any of the episodes (A Certain Clear Day, Playful Outing, Melancholy Thoughts, Premonition of Case, Smartly Dressed and Going Out), but there's quite a few cues that weren't included on this album at all -- nothing from the second half of the OAV series that wasn't in the first half is here -- and that is a real shame.

Anyhoo, I'm going to take a couple of days break and then get to work on the other albums. I had another one show up in the mail yesterday, so that's exciting. :D

i have a question:
have you guys seen all the episodes? are you familiar with the episode where ranma and the others discover that theres a second store on the school and the owner is the former principal? im asking because i once supposedly downloaded all the ranma OSTS there were, looking for one single theme.
the theme im talking about it the one where the old principal is telling the "history" of the school.
no OST i got had the theme, and im wondering if any of you have heard it in an OST.

this is the episode, skip to 10:46, ignore the spanish audio and focus on the music.

im wondering if any of you have heard it in an OST.

Sounds like a cue composed late in the show's lifespan by Akihisa Matsuura. It may be on the Strongest Music collection. It could also be in some of his unreleased music on the Music Ironman Collection. I'll have to check my archives, but I've got a feeling that particular cue was never released.

A lot of good cues from throughout the series run and the last couple of OAVs never saw release, sadly. I'll dig through my digital archive and see if I've got that track tucked away somewhere, though it could take me a while because it's one of the cues I'm least familiar with (I'm a lot more familiar with the stuff from seasons 1 through 4, the movies and the OAVs). If I find it, I'll let you know. :)

Sorry for the delay on this, health issues and trouble with my scanner have set me back. I'm back to work on the FLAC rips, working on separating each of the individual cues as I did with the previous CDs. Two more CDs should be incoming soon, but potentially without the booklet scans. If I can get the scans sorted out later, I'll edit posts to add new archives of just the cans.

ROKUSHO: I can't seem to find the cue you're looking for. I don't think it was ever released. I'll keep a look-out for it, though.

Again, I want to apologize for the thread falling off the face of the Earth, incomplete. The health issues really piled up on me, it's set back pretty much everything I've been working on -- and some of those things have real world deadlines attached. Gulp! I'm currently on the waiting list for a couple of complicated surgeries, but unfortunately the wait seems to be taking forever. And ever. And ever.

Circumstance willing, I'll try to have the rest of the discs I currently own up in the next couple of months. The search continues for the two or three I still don't own.

So here's what's been going on:

As much as I've wanted to finish ripping and providing my collection, in February of last year some really nasty health issues began to creep up on me. They continued to build and compound until I was admitted to hospital in December, and I've been a long-term patient ever since. My discharge date is currently set for somewhere in mid-March, but I'm going to have to continue some pretty hefty out-patient treatment once I return home.

I hope to get back to working on my collection in March, but if not, know that I haven't abandoned this project. I'm still as keen as ever, I just need to get back on my feet first. I'm looking at an extremely long recovery process, unfortunately.
