I can't understand how people can place John Williams' boring sounds above what Hans brings...You're comparing a man who's greatest legacy are some (I admit, gorgeous) themes, like Williams, with someone who's almost every score is a beautiful story from start to finish...

How is the score? It's okay. There are a few unique, adventurous tracks (Boat Trip to New Orleans, Escape Sequence, Time Passing Sequence) that sound like something from a Paul Thomas Anderson movie. The rest is just Thin Red Line re-hash sounding stuff. Saving Mr. Banks is a much better score by leaps and bounds.

I'm a Zimmer fan and was very curious about 12 years a slave. But I'm greatly disappointed with this one. Apart from a few tracks which sound like Jonny Greenwood's work with Paul Thomas Anderson, it's like others have pointed out, just variations of Time. Really lazy. And to add to this the academy will most likely nominate this thing over Rush, which I think is Zimmer's best work since Inception. And the Amazing Spider-Man 2 fanfare sounds more like Star Trek than Spiderman. Looks like another misfire for Zimmer. But the Interstellar teaser trailer music is pretty low key and intriguing. Here's hoping Nolan galvanizes his creativity with Interstellar.

Zimmer needs a wake-up call! Since Inception, it's been going from bad to worse, MoS was okay but I'm still missing the old school Epicness that used to be Zimmer's trademark.

Totally agree with this. I've listened it twice and got bored after 15 minutes of music. Nothing special with it, and don't understand why is it a big contender for the oscars.

On the contrary I hated that cue. I was enjoying the first 6 cues then it came to "Boat Trip..." and I was like, ...WTF...am I suddenly trap from another dimension when suddenly there's this alien sounding banging (cough cough, Transformers, Battleshit cues) gushing out from a serious historical/drama score?...it just sounded weird and out of place. Glad it didn't bag the award. Nothing new much to hear just the same typical Zimmer scores as of late.

Are you actually comparing scores of Inception and the Rock with the score of a movie like 12 years a slave? This just sounds like you don't care for the match between a story line, movie and music. You just want fireworks...or am I mistaken?

As a big admirer of Hans Zimmer, I'm sorry to say that it was kinda boring. Though main theme is emotional and all, it is repetitive and doesn't save the album. But that say, maybe this album doesn't make justice to the score ? I don't know. Anyway thank you for the share
