I remember when I had the rare chance to speak with Mr. Ottman, surprisingly the only question I had in regards to this score was: what is that instrument (that snapping sound) when the wing snaps during the Rough Flight cue. It is a common sound in his scores. Amazingly the one time I have needed to recall what that particular musical stick was called or from which culture it originated from, it has slipped from my memory. All I could focus on was that he did not particularly like his score for House of Wax and that was all I wanted, haha. The conversation pretty much centered around House of Wax. To this day, I still do not have it. Maybe one day LLLR will release it.

Maybe one day La-La Land will also release The Walking Dead, I know there's demand for it. Can I get an Amen Deadites?

My only dissatisfaction (not with this share, but the release) is that since this is La La Land, they combine and crossfade tracks. At least when Intrada & GNP Crescendo do it there is still a gap in the tracks so I can split them. I hate combined cues. I suppose I'll compare this to the complete score and see how the quality compares (I still prefer the FYC version of Reloaded to the La La Land release).

For me it's a generational gap. I just can't enjoy camp/ham. I don't mind comedy, but it needs to be well written and thought out. Returns has the best script, so it automatically wins.

But I also meant I enjoy the score more than Williams' for Superman: The Movie. I completely understand that Returns owes just about everything to Williams' score, and wouldn't be possible without it, but the film it accompanies is campy, that means the score is too. I enjoy the theme (obviously), and the darker moments (like the Krypton theme), but it's just too playful and busy for my tastes (like a lot of Williams' work). Ottman added a choral element that I really enjoy. And Lex's new theme is great, even if it is rather short.

Nah, I enjoy your perspective... And I guess my love of the originals is definitely due to my age. It's nostalgic for me (being born in '77 and growing up with the films and scores). But I usually feel alone in that I also love Singers film and Ottman's score very much!

The film gets far too much hate than it deserves, much like Man of Steel. The biggest reason why people hate those two films so much is because it doesn't mesh with the version of the character they have in their heads, not because the films are inherently worse than past Superman films or even other comic book movies in general.

The myth of Superman has been built up to such a degree that it's impossible to please everyone (maybe anyone). His legacy is now more of a hindrance than anything else. Which, considering how beloved the character is, is both confusing and irritating.

Now I'm not saying either film is perfect (admittedly, both have some pretty glaring problems), but overall I enjoy them.

I just wish Ottman had had the chance to flesh out more of an arc for his themes in later films, which hopefully he'll be able to do with X-Men. I'm getting tired of superhero films having no thematic coherence in their sequels. Just pick a theme and stick with it. Doyle's score for Thor was fantastic, as was Horner's for Spider-Man & Debney's for Iron Man. Even Silvestri's Captain America was good. Why not bring them back? Was a replacement really necessary? The Transformers or the Fast & Furious films are more consistent, and those franchises are a joke.

And now there's a chance that Zimmer might not return for Batman vs. Superman. I imagine I'm one of the few people out there very much enjoyed his score for Man of Steel (even though I'm not a Zimmerite and actually dislike a good deal of what he does), and I think it would be a shame if he didn't come back. If he doesn't want to do Batman again, just get a co-composer. Bear McCreary & Clint Mansell, although favorites, are probably unlikely, but Junkie XL or Ilan Eshkeri would certainly work. Atli Orvarsson, too.

After a playthrough of the LLLR edition, I have decided that I will continue listening to the recording sessions exclusively. I was not too partial to a lot of the edits that LLLR implemented. Some tracks would have flowed better in my opinion with a second or two more seconds of silence in between the suited cues (a la Intrada). Not to mention, the mix does not feature as great of a mastering as I expected. Rough Flight (my favorite cue of the entire set) sounds compressed especially as the cue gets more intense. I have played both lossy and lossless on multiple systems and each produces the same sour expression on my face.

A small gripe to make but it would have also been nice to have the drum roll that precedes the opening notes of the Superman March as part of the main playlist but to have it included as bonus material is a nice addition too. Luckily that cue also exists on the recording sessions leak so even better. :)

Thanks a ton! I've had a bootleg of this for a few years now and I love it. I think Ottman did an amazing job of adding new material to what Williams had already written for the character.
