Well I listened to the normal edition a lot and now a few times to the special edition.

I can't seem to find many differences apart from some longer intros or outro's from the tracks. I also noticed some of the more epic action music is a bit less epic because of the extended silent interludes.
Reminds me of the first film where some tracks like Roast Mutton where actually better on the standard edition then the extended/modified versions.

Going to see the film tomorrow at the Pacific Science Center Boeing in IMAX 70mm. I'm just hoping to god that they modify Ed Sheeran's song "I See Fire" to more fit the classical music style of Middle-earth. Like what they did with Song of the Lonely Mountain in the theatrical version where they added a more classical orchestration to the surround channels of the song and minimized the vocal echo that was waaaaay overdone in the album version.

Fatjacky

Hey everyone, I thought I'd post my thoughts on "I See Fire" after seeing the film in IMAX 70mm just an hour ago.

It's basically the same song....

That's right, ALMOST nothing has been changed. The only slight difference I noticed is that close to the end of the song they bring out Ed's main vocals above his harmonized vocals to give it a slightly more natural feel and you can hear the pronunciation of the lyrics better (similar to Song of the Lonely Mountain where the lyrics were clearer). Besides that, it's the same thing, no extra orchestration, no instrumental intro to the song (it goes straight from the end of the film to his first vocal note which is pretty jarring), not much in the way of vocal remixing.

On a better note, the song did sound a bit better in the theaters because anything mixed into surround sound is going to sound more powerful than its stereo counterpart, mostly because they can take what little instrumentation there is and let it fill the surround channels along with putting the bass through the LFE channel to give a nice boost to the power.

In the end, it's unfortunate, but that's the way it is.

I might post a link later to give you an example (don't tell anybody ;)). BUT, there's a nice little 5 second instrumental intro to "Beyond the Forest" that's neat.

Also some good news, no tracked music. Any music that is similar to Lord of the Rings was re-orchestrated to sound pretty different and it's not very common either.

Thanks for the info :)

I guess we'll have to wait for the imminent "complete" soundtracks before we can hear all the music as it (mostly) is as in the films themselfs (hopefully with another DVD with 5.1 higher quality sound). Or perhaps the version on Blu-Ray movie (or DVD) would suffice.

Don't settle for cheap DVD audio.

I don't....but I believe there's still lots of people who do. Although that's not entirely true, the extra DVD audio disc on the complete recordings sounds spectacular.

Kadron
12-16-2013, 05:01 PM
I didnt notice much missing music anyway (More in the movie itself than on the score, lol)

the 3 main things I did notice was Gandalfs theme
some material for the Final Smaug fight
and Bolg had had his own theme during the Forest River scene that appears nowhere on the score

edit: I guess Legolas' intro also counts, but eh that just some boring percussion

JCH152
12-16-2013, 09:06 PM
Although that's not entirely true, the extra DVD audio disc on the complete recordings sounds spectacular.

That's because a true DVD-Audio disk uses MLP or LPCM audio instead of a lossy Dolby Digital track for it's sound.

A DVD movie will only have a lossy track (even a DVD DTS audio track is technically lossy) because of space issues (the movie takes up most of the space and the audio takes up very little). Blu-Ray uses Dolby TrueHD and DTS-Master Audio which are lossless if your system can decode them (they use lossless because there's a lot more space for both the video and audio on a Blu-Ray disk).

But yes, DVD-Audio disks are awesome (I love my LotR DVD-A disk)!

This Mega service is just mega awesome! Thanks for the links.

I've listened to the regular edition and I wasn't blown away by it. Also in the film it doesn't exactly do it for me. It's a much less accessible score than the first The Hobbit.

Maybe by listening to the S.E. my opinion will change, and probably this just needs (many) repeated listens as well.

Like TH:AUJ, it's all very overwhelming to take in in one sitting. Shore endows the material with such potentiality it's easy to get lost amongst the staves. But after several dedicated listens without distraction I've become addicted to this score like very few in recent memory. I haven't seen the film and I can't say I'm eager to either given Jackson's predilection for video game actioneering which completely ruined TH:AUJ for me.
