Rolf Wilhelm (1927-2013) was a German composer of film music. He played the piano from the age of
seven and spent his student years in Berlin and Vienna. He studied piano and composition at the Vienna Musical
Academy from 1942. Just a year later he was drafted into military service, was caught by enemy forces and
continued his studies, now in Munich only from 1946. At the same time he began working as a staff composer
for Radio Mnchen, in which capacity he wrote music for more than 220 radio plays for children. He graduated
in 1948. From 1952 onwards he won an increasing number of commissions for film scores (both features and
documentaries). He worked with many noted directors throughout his career, including Ingmar Bergmann, Paul
May, Werner Jacobs, Harald Reinl and Vicco von Blow, better known as "Loriot". His best-known film score is
probably the epic music he wrote for the remake of Die Nibelungen and Kriemhild's Rache in
the 1960s. He also composed works for the concert hall.
