Not Without My Daughter is based on the harrowing true story of Betty Mahmoody,
an American woman who escaped from Iran with her daughter after her husband
tricked them into visiting his family in Tehran for two weeks, but instead forcing
them to permanently live there and follow their oppressive customs.
Jerry Goldsmith provided an economical score, performed by the renowned National
Philharmonic Orchestra, doing away with the brass and scoring only for strings,
winds, percussion and electronics.
The score centres on two themes. Firstly a hostile middle eastern theme for electronics
and tom-toms depicting the Iranian sequences and secondly a beautiful love theme
for Mother and daughter (The Lake) which Goldsmith later develops to underscore the
escape attempts from the Iranian family.

Petros: Thanks again for this great offering. When this was released, I really wondered about it - it had received more than its fair share of startlingly negative reviews. But in the end, there wasn't much choice: it was Goldsmith and it was from a pretty good Goldsmith period. And I was really glad I got it, because it is a very good Goldsmith score, or at least very much to my tastes. It seems there is a lot of negativity surrounding the film and a lot of that negativity has spilled over onto Goldsmith's work here. And in both cases (even though it's not a great movie), it's most unfair. I have to admit that I don't understand people's thinking. Some people can be oh so enraged at the portrayal (here of a real-life situation) where any certain group or even small group of individuals within a community might be seen as portrayed as "bad guys" or stereotypes, and at the same time be supporting invasions/wars in which said "bad guys" (including women and children) are being killed in large numbers without anyone much even noticing, let alone caring, let alone raising voices of protest. By all means, let's save all our upset for films trying to be about something more than sfx.
So Bravo for bringing attention this undeservedly neglected soundtrack. Hope a lot of people get to hear it. Which is why this is a "Bump".
