Hello Everyone,

Whilst I've been following XBOX's releases for quite some time, I think it might be time for me to jump off of the bandwagon and purchase a PS3...it'll be cheaper with the 4th out and will give me time to get back into Sony's world before getting a PS4 to catch up.....so! I wanted to know if you guys had any recommendations on RPGs to get?? I've heard Ni No Kuni was top..?

On topic: Can't comment about Ni No Kuni as I haven't played it, but White Knight Chronicles I and II are pretty good JRPG's. So is Tales of Xilia. There's also the Dragon Age Duology and Mass Effect Trilogy.

The Disgaea games are good if you like anime and FF/Ogre Tactics style strategy games.

Regular RPGs: Ni no kuni (amazing JRPG), 3D Dot Game Heroes (Zelda tribute & clone), Star Ocean The Last Hope (regular JRPG with insane platinum trophy, which I have *lol*), Tales of Graces f (better than Xillia imo), Resonance of Fate (JRPG with firearms instead of swords). Tales of Symphonia Chronicles will be out in February next year and contains both the original game (the updated PS2 version) as well as the sequel that was released for Wii. Absolutely worth getting, and one of the best Tales games imo.

The following I have not played myself, but my wife loves them. They are JRPGs with more focus on creating items and doing side quests: Ar tonelico Qoga: Knell of Ar Ciel (3rd game in the series, other 2 on PS2), Atelier Rorona (1st in Arlands series), Atelier Totori (2nd), Atelier Meruru (3rd), Atelier Ayesha (1st in Dusk series).

Action RPGs: Demon's Souls and Dark Souls, which are two of the best games I have ever played. They can be quite brutal, so expect to die A LOT. :)

Wow, thank you for replying everyone and your super-helpful advice! Sony really has the best RPGs..I really can't wait to dig through these games. JRPGS are what I grew up on..it's a shame that Xbox doesn't really have too much of them, but it never really took off in Japan as well as Sony as we know..

I've played a few Atelier games in the past and thought they were pretty decent. Not going to lie though, I really loved the Tales of Games (mainly Tales of Destiny 2 (US)/Eternia (JP), my favourite!) but after I played Symphonia on Gamecube I felt like they were switching gears and trying to appeal to younger audiences. I'll look into Chronicles though! Maybe I just need to play it again and continue on with the sequel. Thank you, Satyr -- I really appreciate it.

Valdrick - Big fan of Disgaea, even though I'm not the biggest fan of strategy..will definitely get this one as the series is my exception.

I'd look into the Neptunia series if you like your RPGs with a little fan service. It's about the seventh generation console war. Women known as Goddess of the consoles PS3, Xbox 360 and the Wii. Plenty of old school gaming references await. There are 3 games in the main series. Many gamers feel mixed on the first entry to the series because it's core mechanics. If you look past that in the first game, there are still plenty of enjoyable moments to be had. The second and third games are much better received by gamers since it removes the problems of the original. The first game can be skipped without missing anything in the story, expect for character names. Just giving my two cents on the series. Maybe you'll find it enjoyable. You'll definitely pick out the various different Xbox related references for sure.

Disgaea 3,4 for sure Dragon Age Origins IS a major and mass effect 1,2 and umm 3 kinda.. ending been corrected I guess with DLC but thats all on a person.

I recommend Nier, not only for the fun gameplay, but also the fantastic music and wild sense of humor. Despite the crazy humor, a very serious game hides within.
Folklore is worth a try if you want something a little... different. Great art direction and uses the Dualshock 3's motion controls, but the story is a little confusing because of the way most cutscenes are presented.
The rest of my recommendations are games others have already mentioned: Disgaea 3, 4 and D2 are all awesome, Ni No Kuni is good, Tales of Xillia is good too. However, whatever you do, do NOT get Skyrim for PS3. Just sayin'

I am playing the mass effect series and recommend for the same. It is and incredible game play in role play genre of games.

Glad to hear you're coming over to the Dark Side, OP! :) I see it's been a while since this thread got started, but here are some of my thoughts:

Since the OP mentioned it, I'll just start off by saying that I really liked Ni no Kuni. It might seem a little more "child-like" than your typical American RPG (e.g. Dragon Age/Mass Effect series), but it really felt like a Studio Ghibli movie meets classic JRPG (because, well, that's what it is). The soundtrack is great as well. Overall, I felt that the time it takes to fully explore the game and post-game is exactly how long I felt like spending on it, if that makes sense. I was really into it for as long as that took, and I was ready to put it down after getting that platinum. I'd like to go back to it at some point just to 100% some of the smaller details that aren't required for platinum. Ni no Kuni also got me back into FFXIII after I had set that aside for a bit, and I enjoyed that as well.

I'm sure you're seeing Skyrim mentioned everywhere, too. I have to say that I liked it overall, and I think it's worth a play through, though it's clearly a far better game in concept than reality, since there are so many bugs. Perhaps rent it for a bit? Or it goes decently cheap now used, especially the original version without the DLC. On that note, one of the things I noticed recently is that the Dawnguard DLC (now included with the Legendary edition) kicks in at level 10 and (fingers crossed I'm not spoiling too much!) has a significant impact on the gaming experience as soon as it activates. Since I bought Skyrim before the DLC launched, I was able to avoid that issue until I was quite high level, and while I liked playing Dawnguard at a high level, when I picked up a low-level character I found myself deleting Dawnguard while retaining Hearthfire and Dragonborn. (I'm not sure if any of the DLC is installable/deletable as a separate entity if you buy an edition that includes it already, so just something to consider.)

I can't speak to Mass Effect (I hear good things!), but the Dragon Age series is great. There's an interesting system of creating and maintaining relationships between your character and companion NPCs in both Origins and DA II, though those systems differ quite a bit between the two games. One word of warning in general for the series: be prepared for a depressing storyline, especially in the sequel. There are plenty of laughs in DA II, as well as a great cast of characters, but the bleak (but beautiful) art design visually reinforces a feeling that you're constantly choosing (and you are constantly making choices!) between some pretty bleak alternatives. That's not a reason to miss it, though, especially with Inquisition due out in October. I believe that you'll be able to import game saves from DA II into Inquisition just like you can import Origins saves into DA II, so there should be some sense of continuity there (fingers crossed it's not bugged). (A side note on DLC: I don't have anything more than the little freebie items from Origins that you get from the EA website, but I bought both of the major DLC for DA II, and I felt they both added real substance to both the characters and storyline.)

I loved Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. It's a terrible shame there won't be a sequel to this game. (The story behind the studio and its downfall is House of Cards-worthy.) It had a very nice art style in addition to an interesting premise and storyline. I really liked the fact that you can mix classes ("destinies") and that you can do all of the side questlines (warrior, mage, and rogue) in the same playthrough. Some people find this kind of thing unbelievable in a bad sense (why should my warrior-rogue mix be able to do a sorcery questline, realistically speaking?), but I think it adds to the game, at least in this case, because it meant I wasn't missing anything. That said, you will still have some mutually exclusive choices to make throughout the game, so choose wisely. There's also two sets of DLC for this one, which I think are worth it if you want more of the KoA experience.

I'm just starting Dragon's Dogma (Dark Arisen) now. So far it looks like a lot of fun, though I see it gets just above average (~8/10) reviews. If you're interested, here's a suggestion about how to get a helpful bonus: 1) borrow or rent a copy of Dragon's Dogma (the original, not Dark Arisen), then install and play it for a few minutes, making sure to make a save after you've customized your character the way you like. This can be a great introduction to what gameplay is like, but I would advise not getting too far (more than 5-10 hours) on the original, because you can get an extra bonus with the Dark Arisen expansion: 2) if you like what you see, buy the Dark Arisen version (contains the original game with an expansion, plus a bunch of DLC), and 3) install Dark Arisen and import your saved game from the original DD, which will give you a few (quite useful!) perks in addition to all the stuff that comes with Dark Arisen itself.

Since it probably has to be mentioned at some point: Diablo III was visually pleasant (especially the equipment), but the gameplay became a little too repetitive for me. I might come back to it, but for now it's on the back burner. (Apologies to any die-hard Diablo fans!) I had the same problem with Dragon Hunter: Alliance, too.

I also see the following get great reviews, though I haven't tried them myself, if only because I tend to prefer D&D-type weapons to modern firearms: Uncharted (1, 2, 3) and Far Cry (especially 3). Far Cry 3 in particular has been compared to Skyrim in terms of its open world nature, but I'm afraid I don't know much more about it.

I think that's all I've got in terms of RPGs. (If I've forgotten anything, I'll be back!) I'd be happy to discuss any of the games above (that I've played, that is) and of course to hear about any other RPGs I should get into. I suspect Dragon's Dogma might keep me occupied for a while, though...

In other news: The PS4 is already out as we know, as is the XBOX One, and I'm currently waiting to see which system has a halfway decent line-up on RPG games...and a slim console edition (which has become the routine for consoles now). Did anyone see this article?? I'm starting to feel some restored faith for the XBOX's Japanese line-up which is good!
