Editorial Notes:

Note: Up next, I present to you the first film score to ever grace the world of music straight from the twisted musical mind of legendary composer Danny Elfman, Pee-wee's Big Adventure. I'm surprised that no one has posted something like this yet but here ya go.

This score, like the Beetlejuice deluxe edition I posted recently, is a doozy of a score. It has a little of everything from fun comedy music to big orchestral numbers to old school b-movie horror synth mood pieces to old school western to mariachi with a fun (and corny) little love theme to tie it all together. That last-second development of the love theme at the end of the track "The Drive-In (Finale)" completely surprised me and brought the score full circle. It was a nice touch for not only a first film score but also for the journey of the character Pee-wee himself whom was getting his first film after years of exposure as a popular stage personality...and he gets his love interest in the end. Then comes Big Top Pee-wee but we won't get into that. Paul Reubens was and still is Pee-wee and I remember prior to seeing this film, I had only been exposed to the episodic renditions of his characters in Pee-wee's Playhouse which is really something that just has to be seen to be believed. Kids today certainly wouldn't react as strongly to Pee-wee as we did growing up; he was a large part of the 80's and 90's childhood experience. In retrospect, the 80's and 90's were kinda shitty as far as the economy and all that goes but entertainment was actually educational, honest, interesting and fun to watch. I know part of my feelings about the modern generation is that of course I'm growing older and my feelings will change as I go along. I never really accepted the Twilight generation or the Jersey Shore generation or the Hannah Montana generation or the Justin Beiber generation. I grew up with the early Harry Potter generation. I specifically remember sitting at a school assembly in the library and one of the advertisements I saw were for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Never in a thousand years would I have ever dreamed of it turning into the phenomenon it did. Now, of course, time has wisened me to the fact of how the economy works and where there's interest, there's money and they will milk that cow for all it's worth. Harry Potter as a (now) whole movie franchise, I was quite pleased with them. Did they ultimately meet my expectations? Yes. I wish John Williams had stayed on as composer but I'm happy with Patrick Doyle and Alexander Desplat but Nicholas Hooper's music didn't particularly stand out to me. Perhaps I need to re-watch them again. They stayed pretty faithful to the books while making some questionable changes but it is what it is.

For this deluxe edition, I utilized the Elfman/Burton anniversary box set album and sections from the DVD (sadly I do not own the Bluray yet) isolated score. The box set album was originally in FLAC so the sections where it is used is genuine FLAC. Some sections on the album were cut down from the film version so I expanded those scenes out with the isolated score. The box set was generous enough to include both film version and alternate album versions of some cues and I utilized the film versions as often as possible. I had a reference copy of the complete isolated score I had mixed years ago to guide me along on how to mix it. The box set surprisingly was dry in sections that were a lot thicker on the isolated score on account of the reverb used but overall, it makes little difference as the album clearly sounds better. I sprinkled some little cues from the isolated score across the set for completeness which will be detailed in my editorial notes so read below for that. As a special bonus, I included the music box suite from the box set to end the album. Apart from missing one 30 second cue due to difficult leveling, this is the most complete and comprehensive edition currently available in a tracklist order that isn't head-scratchingly...head-scratching.

Lastly, the in-movie source music during the drive-in movie scenes are still missing. I'm leaning strongly towards the belief that Elfman did not write or compose the music for those scenes hence why they're missing from both the isolated score and the box set.

This project has been a very interesting and fun one and one day, I honestly hope to beat LaLaLand at re-releasing this in a proper official form. Blood Wings Records will be opening as soon as I can get some clientele and make some deals. One step at a time but keep an eye out. I don't know what to expect so neither should you. All I know is I will not sell bad quality albums. I know I get slackish on here but trust me, when there's money involved it gets me going, ya know? That ties back to my comment about the economy. Plus I've exhibited a great degree of quality on here so I trust that you should have no fears about experiencing disappointment with my official releases. All your comments do make a difference. I want to bring you what you want but first, if you notice any error with the mixing of any of my projects, please address it in the comments section below. It makes all the difference when it comes to getting my name out there. I take all comments seriously (sorry, it's a habit. No offense [unless specifically stated] for any out-of-line or dickish replies made by me]).

Enjoy!

1. Main Titles/Bike Race (box set)
2. The Breakfast Machine (box set)
3. Morning/The Bike (first 2 pieces are from isolated score, first piece actually chronologically goes before "The Breakfast Machine" but as a listening experience goes much better in this play order; the last main piece is from the box set)
4. The Park Ride (mostly box set with some isolated score sections; the album version was mostly the film version but annoyingly featured dialogue and sound effects from the film at a couple of points of the music so I replaced those sections with the isolated score. The results are seamless but it's one of those head-scratcher scenarios most listeners got when they first received and spun the discs from the set and discovered the wonky presentation choices. Anyway, moving on.)
5. The Mall (box set)
6. Music Store and Beyond (box set)
7. Stolen Bike (mostly box set but had to implement isolated score to incorporate about a minute of missing music which then transitions back to the box set)
8. Bathtime with Francis (box set, incorporated isolated score from 0:32-0:34, another head-scratcher scenario from the box set albeit VERY brief complaint)
9. Pee-wee's Interrogation (box set)
10. Madam Ruby/Hitchhiker (box set from 0:00-0:17, isolated score from 0:18-2:44, box set for remainder)
11. A Ride with Mickey (box set)
12. A Lift from Large Marge (box set from 0:00-0:42, isolated score for remainder)
13. Dreams (Simone Theme) (isolated score from 0:00-0:34, box set for remainder)
14. Angry Andy #1 (box set)
15. Dino Dream (box set)
16. The Alamo (box set for first section, isolated score for remainder)
17. The Bus Stop (Simone Theme Reprise) (box set)
18. Angry Andy #2/Cowboy Pee-wee (box set from 0:00-0:22, isolated score covers the mariachi sequence which was an odd piece to be missing since it creates consistency with the next track but whatever, from 0:47 to the end is from the box set)
19. Andy and the Bull (box set)
20. Clown Dream (box set)
21. Warner Bros. Studios (isolated score, there was one piece after this that I left off because leveling was difficult on that cue for the time I had to do it and it was an insignificant cue to have missing. If anyone knows what that piece is, feel free to let me know if there's a higher quality version available with the proper levels)
22. Studio Chase (box set)
23. Pet Shop Rescue (box set)
24. The Drive-In (Finale) (isolated score from 0:00-0:13, the rest is from the box set)
25. End Credits (box set)
26. Stolen Bike (album version) (box set, acoustics sound thick with reverb or whatever the hell that is)
27. Madam Ruby/Hitchhiker (album versions) (box set)
28. Dino Dream (album version) (box set)
29. Simone Theme (album version) (box set)
30. Studio Chase (album version) (box set, acoustics also sound extremely thick with reverb or whatever that is)
31. Pee-wee's Big Adventure Music Box Suite (box set)

I have the pee-wee movie source music with no FX...not sure where I even got it from orginally. Anyways, I do believe Elfman wrote it though as it definitely has his signature sound and fits with the rest of the score. I believe it was his decision to not include it on the isolated score. In the commentary he mentions how he doesn't really consider that cue as being part of the actual 'score'...so he ends up talking over it.

Anyways, great work on this! Still one of my favorite Elfman scores.

FYI, This was not Danny Elfman's first film score. 1980's The Forbidden Zone was.

Indeed The Forbidden Zone was Elfman's first movie that he wrote music for. But if you listen to his commentary on the Pee-Wee DVD, he basically admits that this was his first actual musical score in the traditional sense.
