KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER (1974) composed by Gil Melle. Some parts of cues sound like Jerry Fielding's music, despite being uncredited for these episodes.
It's rumored composer Gil Melle left after the first four episodes because the series was becoming less serious.

Many thanks to member feedthecats for his track list in post #33. He also identified the Columbo source track, and erroneous Questor Tapes cues, which inspired me to revamp the entire upload: renamed and reordered tracks, split up some cues, and added the "Night Gallery" theme.
FYI someone from UK has downloaded this and is selling copies on Ebay. I guess we should be flattered...

01. KOLCHAK MAIN THEME 1 minute
02-16. THE RIPPER 15 tracks, 20 minutes
17-33. UFO 17 tracks, 24 minutes
34-49. THE VAMPIRE 16 tracks, 19 minutes
50-52. Questor Tapes, Night Gallery (Themes) 4 minutes
Total: 69 min.
From bootleg cdr, I rearranged RIPPER and UFO cues into chronological episode order. Two UFO tracks contained non-consecutive cues, so I separated them out. Separated out Questor Tapes cues.

NOTES
VAMPIRE tracks 44 and 48 were mostly unused in the actual episode, and instead were partially replaced with tracks 10 and 14 from RIPPER.
A few other unused cues are noted in their track names.
The cdr is missing some music from the film as noted here:
Between tracks 25-26 (20 min. into episode) bridge to morgue.
Between tracks 26-27 (29 min. into episode) bridge in office.
Between tracks 27-28, track 17 is repeated (technically it's not missing so no reason to repeat on cdr).

KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER (1974) Gil Melle...and I think there's some Jerry Fielding in this too. 192 mp3.
49 tracks, 68 minutes. The last two tracks for The Ripper were in the wrong order, which I corrected. There's a cue or two near the end which goes in a jazz direction not used in the series (either an alternate take, or trimmed off for the show).
This is a bootleg for the TVseries, not the forbidden Robert Cobert score for the TVmovie. Do not delete for that reason!

Based on a boot of this I acquired a few years ago, and taken from a viewing of the complete DVD set of Kolchak, here are track titles I came up with. I’ve taken into account the two tracks that Sadsack swapped around, so they will fit this particular download.

It should be noted that two tracks from Melle’s made-for-TV movie score “THE QUESTOR TAPES” were thrown onto this boot. Don’t ask me why, but they’re there! (Tracks 32 and 33). They are NOT from the episode “UFO.”

Also of interest is the lounge source (track 40) which is a solo piano version of Melle’s COLUMBO theme!

TRACK TITLES:

1. Main Theme (1:01)

Tracks 2 - 16 from "THE RIPPER"
2. Strip Club / First Victim (1:45)
3. Opening (0:28)
4. Another Victim (0:30)
5. Cop Carnage (1:39)
6. Weird Customer (1:16)
7. Bad Exposure / "It Was Horrible" (0:39)
8. The Letters (0:49)
9. Massage Parlour (2:44)
10. More Cop Carnage (1:19)
11. Jane In Peril (0:54)
12. Act Out (0:08)
13. First Lead (0:23)
14. Killer's Lair / Zap The Ripper (6:49)
15. Back At The Office (0:14)
16. Who'd Believe It? (0:20)

Tracks 17 - 31 from "UFO"
17. Opening (0:26)
18. Unlucky Cheetah / Kolchak At The Zoo (1:41)
19. It Stinks (0:35)
20. Strange Rock / Purse Snatcher (1:35)
21. What's That? / Ka-Pow! (1:26)
22. Vanishing Trick (0:29)
23. Mystery Men (0:32)
24. Autopsy Tape / Night Terror (1:48)
25. Have Another Seltzer (0:18)
26. Incident At Planetarium (5:08)
27. Alien Presence (1:36)
28. Kolchak On The Move (unused) (0:29)
29. Invisible Force (1:58)
30. Silver Spaceship (5:35)
31. Last Word (0:30)

Tracks 32 & 33 are from the TV Movie “THE QUESTOR TAPES”:

32. The Questor Tapes (Main Title) (2:03)
33. The Questor Tapes (End Title) (0:57)

Tracks 34 - 49 from "THE VAMPIRE"
34. Dead Of Night (2:00)
35. Kolchak To LA / Vamp Attack (1:33)
36. Hotel Source (0:51)
37. Guru's House (0:30)
38. Car Radio (1:12)
39. Hollywood (0:46)
40. Lounge Source (Theme from COLUMBO) (2:13)
41. Foxy Vamp (0:10)
42. Investigations (0:28)
43. Kolchak Sets The Trap (1:02)
44. Vamp Seduction & Escape (unused) (1:06)
45. Necktie Threat (0:23)
46. Vamp Mansion (1:39)

excellent, great work!
the QUESTOR music is similar to the Kolchak music, so it makes sense somebody included it in the CD. There's also a Kolchak source-type cue (Hotel Radio) used on THE SENTINEL soundtrack, whose main theme is reminiscent of his FRANKENSTEIN score, so obviously Melle reused his themes. Anyway, thanks for identifying the QUESTOR cues.

Regarding the two cues (15 & 16) on the boot which I swapped to match the episode, why did you name one of them "Unused"? Isnt he returning or in the office typing up his story?

You could be right. At the time I couldn't identify that short piece of music, and unfortunately I no longer have the DVDs to check. I guess people could call that cue anything they want ... "Back At The Office" ... "Kolchak Returns" ... or if some enterprising soul has the DVDs and the time to check, feel free! I'd be curious to know if I just missed it.

Actually - just had a bright idea - I checked to see if the episode is on Youtube, and it is. I watched the climax and - you're absolutely right! - that short cue comes after the scene where the ripper is electrocuted and Kolchak returns to his office. Well spotted. I'll edit my track list above to rectify this.

What a great, grand re-construction! I've waited decades to hear this! Thank you all!!!
(Why is it that I use more exclamation marks here in one post than I do elsewhere in a year?)
There was a TV movie in 1971, Ellery Queen: Don't Look Behind You, whose theme song (Jerry Fielding?) seems to me was used as an underscore quite often in Kolchak.

If you're asking if this contains all the music used in the series: no, it's only for the 3 episodes, and there's some small bits of music missing.
There's two unused tracks - they might have been used later in the series, or not at all, just as the QUESTOR cues were unrelated. Another cue was partially used. Also noted where cues were shared between episodes.
It's explained in the first post, and tracklist.

Thank you very much for this! Though it is a year after feedthecats made the statement of not knowing why the cues for "The Questor Tapes" are included with the rest of the tracks, I have an answer. According to "The Night Stalker Companion" by Mark Dawidziak, when Gil Melle was hired by Universal to come up with a main theme for the Kolchak series, he was informed that he had twenty minutes to do so since Darren McGavin was heading off in that time to film the opening main title sequence, where Kolchak enters the INS newsroom whistling the theme. Scrambling, Melle remembered a secondary theme he had composed for the "The Questor Tapes" t.v. movie/pilot (another Universal production) earlier that year. This secondary theme starts at 1:21 on the Questor Tapes Main Title track in this collection. Melle quickly found that piece of music in the Universal music library, whistled it into a tape recorder, and then handed off the recorder to McGavin who then went off and shot the opening sequence. So, in short, that secondary theme for "The Questor Tapes" is what became the main theme for "Kolchak: The Night Stalker"!

sadsack
05-28-2014, 05:06 AM
that's an interesting story of how Melle came up with the Kolchak theme....but I'm not sure it explains why the two tracks were included, unless whomever made the collection wanted to demonstrate the connection?
Speaking of how themes are born, I've often wondered if Don Ellis based one of his themes for FRENCH CONNECTION when the police are ripping up the French guy's car. A power tool happens to make the same sound as part of a musical bridge he uses.

What the hell?

How did Gremlins find their way into Kolchak's 7th Level of Hell??

Talk about your inter-series contamination!

My theory is that Kolchak was investigating a Gremlin Black Mass.

Sure, the Gremlins had been reading about Anton LaVey in their local public library.

From Anton LaVey, they began spinning Beatles records backwards. Finally, they graduated to "the hard stuff."

Sometime after midnight in an abandoned warehouse, Kolchak must have tripped over a 50-gallon drum of communion wafers (it just happened to be in the way). Said wafers were greedily consumed by hordes of hungry, mischievous Gremlins!

After consuming the wafers (which tasted like Styrofoam), our mischievous Gremlins gave way to pissed off Gremlins (with scorching cases of herpes)!

It happens like that every time!

"And now, you know the rest of the story!"

The moral of this tale:

Knowledge is bad. Therefore, Burn Libraries!
Don't listen to Beatles records played backwards on the turntable or you'll see Kolchak in your dreams!

Actually, the series is not great objectively. The first TV-movie is ULTIMO PRIMO, the second THE NIGHT STRANGLER is pretty good, but the series fell into cheesy repetition.

Producer Cy Chermak talks a lot about the series in a recent book I edited for him at Jacobs/Brown Press, THE SHOW RUNNER. http://www.jacobsbrownmediagroup.com/the-show-runner.html

See ya!

Agreed on that! Karl Kolchak is the role McGavin was BORN to play. "This is a NEWSpaper, Vincenzo! We print NEWS!"
