Film Night At Tanglewood
Live broadcast, 2013-08-24

John Williams, David Newman & Audra McDonald
with the Boston Pops Orchestra

A beloved summer tradition continued on August 24 at 8:30 p.m. in the Shed with John Williams' Film Night. Joining maestro Williams and the Boston Pops for this special program ─which featured selections by Alfred Newman, Henry Mancini, Max Steiner, and more─ were guest conductor David Newman, son of Alfred Newman and a film composer in his own right, and superstar vocalist and Broadway and screen actress Audra McDonald, who recently won a Tony Award for her performance as the leading lady in Porgy and Bess. Ms. McDonald joined the orchestra for selections from a number of films, including A Star Is Born, State Fair, and The West Point Story. Mr. Williams also lead the Pops in his own film music, including pieces from Jaws, Indiana Jones, and Hook. (Text from www.bso.org (http://www.bso.org/Performance/Detail/48900))

You are welcome, folks. :)

For the ones who didn't listen to this, here's the explanation of my above comment about the password. It's part of the introduction by David Newman to Henry Mancini's Finale from Breakfast At Tiffany's:

"And Hank(*) used to tell a really funny story about Breakast at Tiffany's, and it... He wrote the song Moon River, Audrey Hepburn sings in the movie. They, everybody loved the song, and so they went to a... what they would call a preview. It's like an out-of-town try-out where you get an audience, they don't pay money, and they tell you what they think of the film.

So they had a reel with the Paramount film, they had great screening, and then the head of the studio comes out and Mancini is there, Audrey Hepburn is there, and he says:

─ You know? I don't like that song. You, you guys, you need to write another song. You ought to take that song out of the film.

And Hank said that Audrey Hepburn, who was very demure, very elegant, said in a very colorful way:

─ Over my bleep bleep dead body are you taking that song out of the film.

And I love that story because I think it describes what Hollywod is, is... a great truth in Hollywood, which is: for all that expertise and the great people that are around and working it, really nobody knows exactly what's gonna happen. You don't know if the film is gonna be a hit, you don't know if it's going to be an artistic hit. And you can't imagine this movie without the song; it's unthinkable, but it just barely got in because the head of the studio didn't want it in, and it had to be forced into the movie."
