I'm interested in picking up FFXI, but I can't decide if it would be better to have it on PC or PS2. Can anyone tell me the advantages/disadvantages? I'm about to purchase a new computer that could definitely handle it, but at the same time maybe it would be better to just get it for PS2, seeing as it is strictly a gaming console. What do you think?

If your PC can handle it, then I'd definitely get it for that. The game is going to look a lot better on a good PC, and there are other little convienences. It's easier to take screens on the PC, and easier to pull prey using a mouse.

I play on the PS2 and have only gotten one chance so far to play on the PC, but I personally do find it easier to play the game using a controller- so try and get a ps2 controller for your computer if you can. ^^

I find controllers clunky and nearly impossible to use. Same with the mouse.

So I just use the keyboard for my PC, and it works like a charm <3.

The PC has the best of both really... assuming you have a powerful PC and a PS2 controller adpator.

Graphics-wise, PC ish potentially better with even an average video card. PC ish more customizable--more options for turning on and off special effects, and the ability to change controller configuration, if you use one. As has been said before, screenshots are infinitely easier to snap and manage on PC, and with a program like fraps (http://www.fraps.com) you can take full-screen, high-res images at the touch of a key.

Then there's the luxury aspect. I find PS2's loading times to be significanty shorter than PC's. Also, ish so much easier to relax with a controller in hand and a big screen tv that you can still view clearly as you recline. :3

They're still very much the same...Typo would alternate between the two depending on what he ish doing. I can't really recommend one above the other. "X3

I haven't really played the PC version, but seeing as it was an MMORPG originally designed for console, what Typo said here would pretty sum up my feelings. If it were the other way around, then I would have said PC.

One thing to note is that Macros/config are machine dependant. Really this has nothing to do with PS2 vs PC but if you end up getting both, be prepared to retype all your Macros in.

Oh...that's good to know...Because I thought it was stored as data on the server along with your character info...guess it's not then.

PS2 will always beat PC. Always. No arguements.

Did you even pay attention to what this thread is about?

Not really, since I'm not getting FFXI. I can't afford playing it online. Yeah, I'm sorry and all that, but I'm sure FFXI will be better on the PS2 as the graphics are generally better.

Not likely. A high end PC's graphics capabilities squash a PS2's.

pc is better. mmorpg doesn't really fits console imo. my friend has it for ps2 but its sometimes buggy when there are shit load of people and graphic isn't cear as pc.

Here's one aspect I haven't seen touched upon, price! If you've already got a high end PC then I would definately suggest getting the PC version for $50.
If however like me you are behind in the PC department and don't quite have the $500-$700 for a good PC you can get up and running on PS2 for under $200, or $300 if you need a PS2.
PS2= $130
FFXI= $100
Net Adapter= $40
Wireless Keyboard and Mouse= $30

As for graphics, the PC outshines the PS2 but PS2 isn't too shabby. For internet connection, 56k works just fine after the initial update(that will take about 4 hours). I definately prefer the control with the PS2 controller, With the mouse I would often lose the cursor and wind up wildly autoscrolling. As Typo said,
I can't really recommend one above the other.

If you get the PS2 version definately consider investing in a keyboard because there are people out there who talk in battles and you'll want to say something really quick or worn them before they do something and it's just impossible to type that fast with the controller.

I was playing with a guy once who would stop for 10 minutes to write some long message and we would all either have to wait for him while he typed or leave him behind.

Actually, when most people disconnected and I asked, 75% of the time they're on PC...the PS2 is much more stable, seeing as it is the original version.

I think RIGHT NOW Pc is better (though i have it for PS2) only because you can hack the game and change alot of stuff like change your moogle, and there are all those bots not to mention... But i think that PS2 will come out with better features once $ony starts to have more ideas for the HDD.

Well the places ive seen with instructions on hacking the game, mostly its not cheating. its just for fun, like changing the moogle in your mog house to something different like an orc or king trion or something like that. And i saw a hack somewhere that lets u use japanese symbols in your game for making pictures and stuff. But like i said... I have it for PS2

You're all aware of the benchmark 2 test right? im just askin if a score of like 3700+ would be better gfx then the ps2 version or on the PC version? i know its not helping much but i didnt want to make a new thread :P (dunno where that strange picture thing came from. i asked for a tiger!)

Typo scored a 1700 on the bench2. Graphics, as well as overall game performance = 10/10.
