Hmm...

First of all, welcome to the Shrine~ I'll be moving this to the General Final Fantasy forum as it's a Final Fantasy topic.

Secondly, there are lots of games with the stamp "Final Fantasy" on it. You've got the main series. (Final Fantasy 1 through to 11, including 10-2.) You've got Final Fantasy:Tactics, and you've got a number of minor titles on the Gameboy, Gameboy Advance, and Gamecube...

Someone doubtless will find a comprehensive list...

Actually, the Final Fantasy Legend series aren't really FF games. They were just given the FF name to sell more copies.

yeah, yeah...they were the start of the SaGa series...but they have FF in the title so they're fair game

Darn it. I was kinda hoping that maybe, just maybe, this would be a thread about "Final Fantasy" - the awesome piece that plays during the ending credits of most of the games, A.K.A. "The Prologue." That would have been far more interesting.

Not only that, but FF Adventure is also the first in the Seiken Densetsu series (i.e. the 'Mana' games). It has been recently rereleased on the GBA under the correct title of Sword of Mana too.

Secondly, here are some additions to the 'list':

FF Collection (Japan only - contains the PSX versions of FFIV, V and VI in the one pack)
FFI (Japan only Wondersan version)
FFII (Japan only Wonderswan version)
FFIV (Japan only Wonderswan version)
FF USA (The Japanese version of FF Mystic Quest)
Mystic Quest Legend (the European version of FF Mystic Quest)
FFII (SNES. The US version of FFIV. Known as FFIV Easy Type in Japan.)
FFIII (SNES. US version of FFVI.)
FFVII 'International' (Japan only. The US and European version of FFVII along with a bonus CD of extras)

Not to mention the animated FF releases:

FF The Legend of the Crystals (Four episode anime OAV set 200 hundred years after FFV.)
FF The Spirits Within (Big budget CG theatrical release which was a major flop, however it was actually quite good.)
FF Unlimited (25 episode anime TV series based around themes of the games. Originally intended to run for 52 episodes, but the series was cancelled on Japanese TV. However not only were portions of episode 26 made, but the story was also continued in Japan as a manga series.)

Plus, there is also coming:

FFVII Before Crisis (Mobile phone game prequel to FFVII featuring the Turks)
FFVII Advent Children (Highly anticipated CG anime movie set 2 years after the original game)
FFI&II Advance (new 'remade' versions of FFI and II on the GBA)
FFIII (on again, off again remake for the Wonderswan. Apparently aborted, rumours resound regarding the project -apparently it may be released instead on the GBA, but nothing is known for sure.)
FFXI European Edition (For PC. Contains the original game, plus both Rise of the Ziliart and Chains of Promathia expansions)
FFXI Chains of Promathia (Newest expansion for FFXI for PC and PS2 in Japan and the US)
FFXII (for PS2. Ties in with FFT and FFTA's stories.)

Phew!

That makes no sense to be honest. It's like saying "I don't have any Irish in me, but I love to drink so I'm 100% Irish!" You can't just say that you're Irish if you're not, just like you can't say a game is a Final Fantasy if it isn't.

well then, let me ask you this....what makes a Final Fantasy a part of the series? Yes, over the years we've come to expect several similair features in the games...but before those were there the games have been so very different from each other? If it were the case that you seem to be implying, why then, FF: Tactics wasn't an FF game either, nor were any FF games that weren't in the directly numbered series.

It was released, in fact that's how I first played it...however, I'm not sure if you can find it still, but if you'd like you could check out www.eidos.com ...they're the producers of it. But I warn you, the PC controls really suck, and the game is buggy in general

I've been playing it on PC for the last few days. Unfortunately, it does have some bugs, the controls are awkward (especially in mini-games), and the sound quality sucks. If I ever replay it, I'll probably get a PS copy.

First time I beat FF7, it was on PC. It's real alright.

Gotta warn you though, it's buggy as all hell.

@Ereptor Eximius

Wow, we both played FFVII on the pc, we both love FFVI, and we both live in Massachusetts.

We must be the same person.

No, I like the PC game. There are a couple bugs, but mostly if you're on Windows XP or 2000, and that can be patched. But once you get past that, there are some real advantages to plyaing the PC version.

Oh, and I also played the PC versions of both VII and VIII first. I didn't have a Playstation 2 when I first played them.

Unlike FFT, TA, CC, and XI? They're all basically unrelated to the FF series, aside from their names. =/

FF Tactics and FF Tactics Advance actually do tie in with the mainstream FF series. Or will do. FFXII is set in the same world of FFT and FFTA, although the game structure is still pretty much the standard turn-based battle system of the mainstream FF games instead of the tile-based strategy system of the 'Tactics' games.

As for FFXI, that's a stand-alone title in the normal FF series. Just because it's an MMORPG doesn't really change the fact that it's FF. After all, Square is even making a Front Mission MMORPG, so it doesn't make it a different game with a switch to online play.

FF Crystal Chronicles however, I guess you could almost call 'FFIX-2'... Almost, as it has a similar setting, similar art style, similar weapons and magic, and even has FFIX's Mognet system! The gameplay is totally different to FFIX's though, and owes probably more to FF Mystic Quest than FFIX.

Okay, I'll get down off my soapbox now... :)

Being called Final Fantasy to begin with would be a good start, and the Legend series wasn't, so it's not really part the group. Chrono Trigger was released in "Final Fantasy Chronicles" and no one suddenly calls it a Final Fantasy.

They don't tie in in the same sense as the pure numbered games, though. Tactics has a completely different system, it's just a different game with FF elements. It could just as easily have been anything else, if you remove the moogles and FF references. XI is a MMORPG. No real need to use the FF name. CC is a different kind of game, too. You just couldn't really accuse them of being FFs in the "true" sense, you know?

How can you say that? "Final Fantasy Legends"... how is that not being called Final Fantasy? Yes, it later beame SaGa...but it was a spinoff from the original series, and last I checked, spinoffs are originally considered part of the main series.

Chrono Trigger is of course not going to be called an FF game because it was originally released without "Final Fantasy" in the title. Key words "Originally Released." How do you know if the developers of FFL always knew it would become its own series?

The FF Legend games have always been part of the SaGa series. In fact, they were properly named as such in their original Japanese releases. It was Square USA who tacked the 'Final Fantasy' label on in order to make the game more popular, as the SaGa games were largely unheard of outside Japan until recently.

And they did the same thing with Seiken Densetsu 1, turning it into FF Adventure, which luckily is now available on the GBA under it's proper title of Sword of Mana.

At least Nintendo changed FF Mystic Quest to Mystic Quest Legend for it's European release, as that game never deserved the privilage of being labelled 'Final Fantasy', but I digress...

Is it? I've never seen it referred to as that, but I suppose that could be one name for it.

Haha, that's basically the rational Merl uses when I tease him about his lack of Irish.

I don't consider the Legends games to be part of the FF series, but I don't think it's necessarily wrong to list them. It depends on what the person is looking for, I s'pose, and we'll never really know that, being as the person who started this thread is banned. :(
