This the HDAD (Hybrid DVD-Audio Disc) released in 2005. It's basically a dual-sided DVD disc, with one side containing the DVD-Video portion (LPCM 96kHz/24bit) and the other side containing the DVD-Audio portion (MLP 192kHz/24bit). I'm just posting the 192/24. Why bother with 96/24, right?

Bare in mind that this is the 1977 OST, not the 1998 expanded release. Meaning: it's incomplete, out of sequence, tracks merged from different parts of the movie and limited sound quality (because they used the LP master). Makes me wonder why give a royal treatment to such a limited source. Go figure! My opinion is this: waste of money. This is barely an improvement over the standard CD releases based on the 1977 OST. You can make your own judgment about it.

This is listed at Cnet's "top 10 must-have DVD-Audio/SACD", if you can believe:

Just looked at the list...can't believe they voted Blue Man Group's: The Complex over their debut album: Audio, which is also available as a 24/96 surround DVD-A and sounds IMMENSE. Never known bass like it.

I didn't even know this existed! Thanks for posting it.

I did a quick and dirty test by throwing the first track's FLAC and the remastered CD rip into Audacity (I have the original CD, just not ripped). The new CD tops out at about 16k with a spike at 32s in at around 20k, whereas the FLAC tops out at about 22k with a definite spike at about 30k.

I'll have to check this out when I get home but generally an LP source is superior quality... I did buy the Blu Ray and it came with a CD printing of the original album but it suffered from some watery mixing which could be an issue with the transfer which might be why this suffers.

Although, to the keen ear, one might notice many unused/alternate phrases in this presentation...

I have had this since Classic Records released it in 2005. It does sound good, but only in high-end DVD-Audio players -- and not really in sub-$500 Universal players. If you have the std. 16/44.1 and have good (but not the highest-end) playback equipment, it's hard to justify the DVD-A version (tho' can't comment on ripped high-rez file playback). All that said, glad someone not as lazy as me finally ripped-n-shared the HDAD!
A new remastering of this score is not a bad idea, tho. Esp, if they go back to the multitrack and remix it a bit.
I had the Lp to at some point. Dunno whether an audiophile vinyl was ever released, tho' a Japanese pressing would be a good place to start in order to hear/rip the best-resolved version of this great JW score.

Many thanks for this, phbart! :)

I was quite tempted when this came up on eBay recently, maybe a good thing I didn't bother (it went for just under 30).

I actually own this disc. Sadly, it does not include track 11 - the disco version that was on every other release. Quite a disappointment in that regard. I have no idea why they dropped that track for this release.

Wish someone was able to aquire the main theme. Don't know why it was exscluded. Probably the original uploader/ripper forgot to extract it because it's a secret track?

If you mean the "disco version", it wasn't included in this DVD-A release. Only the 2015 SACD has it, and the 1990 Varse CD...
