Why the sad smiley. Fans are rejoicing. What's the problem with that. I know, burned sources. I get that. But surely this was bound to pop sooner or later. Eventually most things will. How it happened is simple. Someone shared with someone who shared with someone who posted. It happens.

Alright kids, since it's gonna leak anyway

So all it takes now it that you presume that someone has something and wants to post it?
You don't know if Mr Charles had it. Maybe his story is true, maybe not... but why post a link that is not working? He could have easily checked it?
I can make a post with a tracklist and a non working link, saying here is.. 'sessions xyz', grab it while you can and then wait until someone who actually has it pops up and post a mirror.

I would be very careful with 'to presume' something ...

You really think that's what happened? Sounds a bit paranoid to me, but if you're right we can always just IGNORE the next thread like this one thereby ensuring that nothing (or nothing else) gets leaked in the same way.

And to all the traders who think this was super valuable -- shit happens. There are other bargaining chips out there and many of them HAVEN'T been spread to practically every poster at PianoFiles yet.

I don't know if THAT happend or not. It was just a theory. You can't proof that I'm wrong nor can I proof the Mr Charles story is correct.
At first I wanted to try it myself, posting a tracklist for a rar score and providing a non working link and see if someone will post a mirror... because unfortunately it seems to work.

I'm only saying that it's a little bit naive from whoever posts the mirrors (in this case you) to believe that someone who only provides an already shared tracklist with a non working link and promising to upload it later has the sessions in his possession and wants to share it.

wow you are some piece of work mm-hm thats' exactly what I did. I posted a link to something that led nowhere hoping someone else would post it in return. genius idea! i posted it because someone shared it with me who was spreading it like the wildfires in Yosemite and california! you just dont go around giving random people links to something like this and not expect it to get shared publicly! there were 3 files parts 1 and 2 were 150 mb each and part 3 was 11 mb. so Hah!

He's right ! Some tracks are not complete, others are not Film Version :

- "The Little Big Horntale" is not the Film Version
- "Boot Camp" is not complete. There's an additionnal part of music in the movie at the beginning of this track (40 sec)
- "Intriguing People" is not complete. There's an additionnal part of music in the movie at the end of this track (10 sec)
- "They Are All Perfect" is not the Film Version...not exactly. There's a very, VERY, small variation. Noticed that ? :)

welcome to the world of recording sessions
most of the time, there will be edits to the movie score after all music has been recorded

So which tracks should we keep from the official album?

Track 01: Way of Life starts with '4m20 v8 Season's Pass' and ends with '3m17 v19 Beating In The Rain'. Though there are parts of it which I cant find anywhere in the sessions

Track 02: Specters in the Fog Begins with '2m13 v12 Captured' and ends with a (somewhat rearranged) part from '2m11 /2m12 v25 Battle In The Fog'

Track 03: Taken is '6m32-33 v7 Battle Preparation'

Track 04: Hard Teacher Is '3m18 v12 Intriguing People' and '3m16 v10 Algren Explores Village' combined

Track 05: To Know your Enemy Starts out with either '7m39b v4 Casualties' or the last part of '2m15 v3 Sake'. I cant tell
Then it continues with an arrangement close to '5m29b v2 Street Encounter' and ends with the final segment of '5m31c v11 Safe Passage'

Track 06: Idylls End is '4m24 v20 Every Soldier Has Nightmares', allthough the running times dont add up, so the session version must be longer

Track 07: Safe Passage's first part is '5m27 v10 Haircut' and the second part is a selection from '5m28 v3 Ronin'

Track 08: Ronin incorporates both '1m08 Boot Camp' and '6m36 v8 They Won't Surrender' but only marginally and shortened down as well

Track 09: Red Warrior Starts with '6m35 v5 To The Battlefield' and ends some material from '7m38-39 v2 On/In the Battlefield'

Track 10: Way of the Sword Has the Last part of '7m40a v37 The Final Charge' and all of '7m40b-c They Are All Perfect

Track 11: A Small Measure of Peace is the same as '7m41 v14 A Small Measure of Peace'

not sure if this is all correct, and if the album versions of some tracks are closer to the movie or not

Lets get a few things straight.

The music you hear in the film is not necessarily the original track that was recorded. It may have been edited and had additions or cuts made from it.
When you get the actual 'recording session' cues these are what was originally composed and recorded ! - the composer's original vision. What happens after that when these are cut into the film are dependant on the choice of director / editor and cuts to the scenes in the film at the editing stage.
When people say " cues are not complete" , longer or missing stuff it is because the original recorded cues have been edited or altered to fit the director's vision of the film.
RECORDING SESSIONS are always what was originally composed - not what has been fitted into the final film edit.

Just because the music you hear in the film is different to the original recording session cues does not mean there are cues missing - rather they have been edited.

I dunno HOW many times this needs to be said befor it sinks in. Sets like this are edited from sessions, right? The sessions are from the orchestra recording the score AS WRITTEN BY THE COMPOSER FOR THE MOVIE. Differences heard in film are EDITORIAL DECISIONS MADE BY THE DIRECTOR, and usually do not have anything to do with the composer, who has basically finished the job he was hired to do. Tracks are not film versions? That is because they have been edited from the original track to fit the scene. Bits of tracks missing? Because music was edited in to fit the scene, which may have changed or edited or even added to the movie after the composer finished. Pieces missing altogether? Often because cues were tracked into a scene from other parts of the score. Usually because directors just plain liked it better that way. Unused cues? Were written for scenes that were never filmed, or were deleted, or for scenes that were later re-scored with the aforementioned tracked cues. IF you want all film version stuff, you will ALWAYS be disappointed, or find fault with sets like this. Always. Because, those changes were made for the finished film well after the score was originally recorded, again, using the cues as originally written. That is just the deal. The edited scores likely are cut/paste jobs, and sound like crap without the dialogue and fx, due to very jarring edits.

So, you guys KNOW all this by now. I dunno why you get surprised or disappointed....

And I dunno why you think he's surprised or disappointed. HE'S NOT. He's not complaining. He's not knit picking. He's just MAKING NOTES as to how certain cues on this bootleg differ from the album/film. Some of us find such notes not only interesting, but damned USEFUL. And the fact that he's providing this information means that I don't have to figure it out myself.

I had visited Han's fan-site a few seconds ago and looked at the complete score list for The Last Samurai. Although, there's 36 tracks from the leaked link, the 37th track "Journey Theme" (1:28) wasn't in the complete score. I don't know if it's from either the expanded score or from the original soundtrack. I hope the final track is somewhere... or someplace.

I guarantee you this is just a variation of the "Journey to the Line" theme, as that theme was used for one of the theatrical trailers before its release. (As in 2001s Pearl Harbor.) We probably aren't missing much by not having that track, to be honest.

My understanding is that this is not too different than the OST in most aspects? Either way, this and the Potter one are BIG shares, still very useful leverage. The posting of them was inevitable. But, there will alway be a backlash. When something as sought after as these pop, then all the "sources" get butt-hurt and paranoid. (Although, if you are really in danger, tis not paranoia). Things will slow. Leaks still happen, but not the really big stuff. There are always consequences.

So, yes, be thankful. And enjoy. But try to understand what is being said. The so-called "elitists" are not wrong. This sort of thing is very frustrating for them. And, perhaps, not as good for us in the long run as we think. I saw a blog, for a list of all boot scores to Elfman films. The author was supposing that the prevalence of dvd rips was part of the reason there are less and less isolated scores. That the public would rip them and post them. I dunno. But you can bet that labels DO notice this stuff. Sooner or later, that could prove a problem. Can you imagine a big distributor getting put on the forbidden list? Just saying. And I say that because many here don't see the value of NOT sharing. For most, the only effect these posts have is that they get their toy, and are not concerned with future leaks. But, there could eventually be other "real" downsides.

Thanks so much for finally sharing this amazing score.

Aside: I swear the middle section of "The Final Charge" is tracked from (or at least a variation on) the "Pearl Harbor" score...anyone else notice this?

Jeezus H. Christ. I'm scared to even say thanks for the share, but it's the polite and gracious thing to do, so thanks for the original share and for the alternate links.

Now to put my foot in it. My question is this: why is it considered to be so much worse to share certain "holy grail" type items than any other? ALL of this is pirating. ALL OF IT. Someone mentioned the 'companies' taking notice if certain things got "leaked" and shared, but I say they'd take notice of a place like this NO MATTER WHAT. They'd be crazy not to, so I don't see this having much of anything to do with 'companies', or record labels. Doesn't this have more to do with the people who have the access and ability to share these leaked sessions, etc...? Doesn't it have to do with those individuals having control over who gets what? If their little golden nuggets get shared without their personal approval then they won't share more stuff in the future? Is that more accurate?

I'm not trying to make a dig at those individuals. I don't LIKE that they horde all the best stuff and keep it to themselves, but there's nothing I can do about it so why the hell would I waste time worrying about it? I don't have any sort of right to the sacred material. The only people who do, technically, are the people who paid money to have the work created in the first place. Everything anybody gets here is a bonus. It's a nice gift, a freebie, to add to your existing collection that you (hopefully) paid for out of your own pocket. That's it. That's all. Yes, I would kill for the recording sessions to Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, but the people who have it aren't sharing it yet. There's nothing I can do about it. End of story. I still have a ton of OTHER great scores to listen to that I got from this place. For free. Like this one. Not having the Prisoner of Azkaban sessions doesn't make THIS score less awesome. Enjoy what you get here, people. Whining just wastes YOUR energy and annoys most everyone else.

And remember: you've GOT to respect the market. If everyone just shares everything for free then the people who take the time and money to put scores together in the first place will go out of business and then none of us would have anything. Buy soundtracks. Support the market so that we'll continue to have product offered to us.

Meanwhile, when sessions and/or complete scores are to be had here, TAKE THEM and enjoy the shit out of them. Eventually the record companies will get it through their heads that we, the buying fans, want ALL of it, not just some lousy 45 minutes worth. Frankly, in my opinion, that's why ALL of the great sessions SHOULD be leaked. From what I've read in the threads here, the only reason complete scores usually get a legitimate release is because the sessions get leaked, forcing the company holding the rights to issue an official version so they can get what money they can out of it before everyone interested gets a shared copy. Offer me the complete version in the FIRST PLACE and guess what: then I won't find places like this because I'm desperately hunting for a more complete version of a score that blew me away with its awesomeness. People wouldn't need to rip the isolated score from the dvd or blu-ray. Nor would the (often ridiculous) black markets spring up to offer such things.

Seriously, how many versions of the Indiana Jones scores were compiled and sold through ebay (or in even harder to find places prior to the internet, like conventions or specialty shops) before they finally released an official version. Nuts, I say. NUTS! It's annoying as fuck. I paid a shitload of money for several copies of each. And they all mostly sucked. If Paramount or Decca or whomever had just offered up the whole thing in the first place I would have happily handed them my money and been done with it. I found it annoying that there was a typical release for The Phantom Menace and then, a year later, a complete offering, but I was so happy to have the expanded offering that I would have happily purchased both versions of the next two films as well. But when they don't offer such things to us we either give our money to other people who have tried to compile a more complete version or we get it for free through places like this.

But I digress.

This place is my nirvana. It's the greatest site in the history of the internet as far as I'm concerned. I'm thankful for every single wonderful score that's shared with me. There's a great zen saying that goes something like: "happiness is about wanting what you have, not having what you want." Those that feel the need to complain about what they don't get around here should take a few years meditating on this idea.

Now that I've ranted for the first time, I'm no longer going to consider myself new around here. :-)

to be honest, a lot of composers do get paid for their work and dont need to rely of cd sales to make money. its cd labels like lalaland that are the ones to support as they are a very small label. When i met zimmer, i gave him the lalaland version of black rain and broken arrow to sign sign and he never knew they were released.
"when did these get released? this is what annoys me, no one tells me about these things. the original release of broken arrow was enough, all main and major cues were on that cd"
obviously not word for word, but around the lines.

I doubt that many leaks happen before studios announce an official release. And they don't seem even remotely interested in the money. So many scores they could make a quick buck out of it, and they don't release it (Titanic? ;) ).

Here's the way I see it. You're right, EVERYTHING should be leaked. But as long as that doesn't happen and only some sessions get through to us, the studios are able to easily track down, where the music might have came from in the first place (composer, music editor, mixer etc.) and close that loophole, resulting in stuff not getting leaked anymore. Because of this, I can see the point, why collectors are reluctant to share this stuff openly and are worried about stuff getting shared on places like here. And they seem to be right, all the sessions I noticed on here recently, are all "older" releases, newer sessions are more and more hard to find.

Thank you. That's a really good answer and it makes sense. I'm totally fine with it too. If it takes a few years for the sessions of a great score to become available to us, I can wait. Heck, I never assumed I'd be able to get a hold of ANY of this stuff. Only the internet has made this possible, either through ebay or places like this. So like I was saying before, every one we get is a bonus. By all rights we should never have any of it. Unless, of course, the studios actually put out official releases, which I'd ALSO be fine with. I don't mind paying for the privilege of listening to scores I love. Like you pointed out, however, they don't seem to give a shit.

I love LaLaLand and Intrada and the other small labels because they're finally making some of these great scores available that many of us have always wanted. I'll choose to give them my hard earned cash over pirating any day because I don't want them to go away. They're the only ones who have ever given a crap about our niche fan group, or probably more accurately, cared about preserving the amazing work of these talented composers. And hopefully their success will convince VS and others to put out more deluxe and extended score releases.

As long as we keep getting abbreviated score releases, however, I'll keep coming to places like this and looking for what the market isn't providing. And every time we get something of great value shared with us, I will be forever grateful. And if withholding some scores are necessary to ensure that we DO keep getting sessions and complete versions through networks like this one, I can live with that.
